Bilderback, Johnson, Doherty And Schoffen Winners In LGR Opener
Erickson Scores First Career Win

By Dale R.  Erdmann

Lake Geneva, WI. May 20th. The last time the weather was perfect was the Friday night May 6th.  for the small car show at Lake Geneva Raceway. Tonight the season opener was again a perfect night as weekly racing is now two nights a week. The largest crowd to ever attend a Friday night oval track show since 2002 came out on South Beloit Junior high night. The students that were here had a lot to cheer about, as 13 year old Michael Bilderback of South Beloit, Illinois won the 15 lap Perfection auto body legends feature. Bilderback the 2004 rookie of the year attends that junior high school. ”Doctor Tooth” Ken Johnson of Park Ridge, IL. the defending champion in the Lusia’s pizzeria mini modifieds led every lap of the 15 lap feature race for the win. Steve Doherty of Woodstock, IL. just missed a clean sweep in the Double R towing Basic International cars by winning the 20 lap feature, taking fast time, but took second in the dash, was the best Steve could get. Sonny Schoffen of Crystal Lake, IL. ended up with a big weekend and won the first weapons feature since 1989. The division rules are the same as the Midwest enduro series and the thunder stocks at Slinger. The 15 lap event went non stop as all cars finished within a straight away of the entire pack. 15 year old Steve Erickson of Roscoe, IL. won his first career INEX bandolero 15 lap feature of his career here and Dale Gustum won the Midwest sport truck feature for 15 laps leading every lap.

Before the race program began, fans stood for a moment of silence as the entire puppy powered racing team led by Rodger Emery and others carried black flags around the oval in memory of Shannon Hall who passed away last week. Their spokes person said the season would be dedicated to Shannon a crew member for the team.

The legends feature got off to a rocky start, after someone dumped lube on the track sending cars in every direction, then causing a complete restart. A long delay ensued as Dick Kaiser in his first night out and Kyle LaPier both retired from the event with problems. Kyle Palma moved in front for lap number one, but one lap later Michael Bilderback crept along side the leader, as the both drivers raced for the lead.  Bilderback won the dash to the front, but Palma not giving an inch. Ernie Schaal slipped into third with a tight field behind them. It took point leader Eric Lokemoen eight laps to move through the competitive pack with fast qualifier and defending champion Curt Gnatzig following, as this twosome secured second and third place with five laps to go. The field remained tight as Bilderback could feel the heat from the group behind him. With one lap to go it was too close to call but Bilderback held his own for the win, with the scramble for second Lokemoen Palma and Schaal nipped Gnatzig who got wide in turn three as Joe Scala took sixth with this excellent finish.

In mini modified feature action Ken Johnson moved into the lead at the get go and never looked back. Mike VanHouten looked like a serious threat, but handling problems after starting his challenge against the leader, ended on lap eight, when VanHouten nearly spun. Fast timer Glen Vernezze ended up second but never got that close to Johnson the winner. Curt Thomazin was third, with VanHouten fourth, Chris Thomazin fifth and John DeMay sixth.

The BIC division brought out over 40 cars tonight and the non stop feature saw Rob Schiebel climb in front as the race began, holding that position until lap eight when Steve Doherty the fast timer managed to move in front, holding on for the win despite numerous challenges by defending champion Todd Miller who ended up second, Jack Rabey who placed third, Bob Koch the point leader, who’s streak was now broken at two feature wins. Nick Kasten was fifth and Lenny Adams was sixth.

Reid Kahrs Jr.  paced the field for the first weapons feature in the last two decades,  before Sonny Schoffen moved in front, coming home the winner of the race. Kahrs was second, with quick qualifier Mike Beagel next. Mark Tomasi and former mini mod driver Andy Krueger rounding out the top six.

Going into nights program Michael Cooter was the sole point leader, but problems put the 15 year old in the second row, taking the lead for just one lap before Steve Erickson inched ahead for his first win, that wasn’t easy. Collin Laursen spun on lap four to tighten up the field. Cooter held onto second even with continuous challenges from third place finisher Bobby Yonkee, Cooter is now tied in the points standing for first with Kyle Palma who finished fourth, fast qualifier Branden Allen had problems but managed to take fifth and rookie Vince Haywood was sixth. Palma’s finish has now put him into a tie with Cooter.

Next Friday night the millennium late models return for their Friday debut. The super min cups and the open wheel Rascal outlaws will be here. The legends and bandoleros are off due to a Saturday race in the area. Time trials begin at 6pm.  Races are at 7:30.  as weekly racing continues through September 2nd.
