Holzhausen Claims Oktoberfest Crown
By: Kevin Ramsell

Sunday, October 08, 2006 (West Salem, WI) – Some say that home track advantage helps.  It helped Steve Holzhausen claim his second Wisconsin Late Model Oktoberfest crown.

The 37th Annual Oktoberfest Race Weekend main event saw 28 cars take the green flag on a great fall afternoon at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway.

Chris Weinkauf and Nate Haseleu led the field to the start of the 100-lap main event.  Haseleu would get the early jump over Weinkauf.  But, that lead would only last for 13-laps as Weinkauf got on the inside of him and took over the lead on lap 14.

Weinkauf would take a comfortable lead over the rest of the field through the caution-free event.

Holzhausen started tenth and used his patience to work his way to the front.   By lap 37 he was up to the fifth position.  He would then get past Haseleu for fourth on lap 43.  Three laps later he would continue his charge to the front by taking over third from Josh Vadnais.

Holzhausen would hold on to the third position until he caught up to Jonathan Eilen and challenged for second with 28-laps to go.  After he got around the Hampton, MN driver, he set his sites on Weinkauf.  In a matter of four laps he shrunk the lead from 15 car lengths to being on his back bumper.

With 10-laps to go, Holzhausen made his move to the inside of Weinkauf coming off of turn four.  The two ran side-by-side going into turn one and when they came off of turn two; it was Holzhausen in the lead and the crowd got on their feet to cheer on the local favorite to the checkered flag.

“I was really hoping for a caution, because he really got out there a long ways,” an exhausted Holzhausen stated in victory lane.  “I knew I had a good car, but I was kind of surprised to catch him”

Weinkauf would hold on to second over Neil Knoblock, who finished third after starting 20th.   Fast qualifier Mark Eswein came home fourth with Eilen rounding out the top five.

“I really didn’t know what the car was going to do, so I wanted to get out there as far as I could,” Weinkauf stated.  “I saw him in my mirror when he was on my rear bumper, but I couldn’t do anything to hold him back.”

Wisconsin Legend, Dick Trickle, came home seventh after starting 18th.  Jim Weber finished 15th.

In earlier action, Tim Schendel, Frank Kreyer, and Kris Kelly advanced from the first Last Chance Race.  Rob Debnecay, Chris Skrede, and Pete Moore grabbed the final three positions in the second Last Chance Race.

The 38th Annual Oktoberfest Race Weekend will take place on Oktober 4-7, 2007.  Make plans now to be a part of “Racing’s Family Reunion.”
