2006 Oktoberfest Race Weekend Set
West Salem, Wisconsin - The 37th Annual Oktoberfest Race Weekend will see
action October 5th through 8th at the LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway surrounded
by the spectacular fall colors of Western Wisconsin.
Now the grand-daddy of all stock car special events in Wisconsin and
Minnesota, "Fest" features six divisions of late model competition
(Big-8, Nascar AutoZone, ASA North, Central Wisconsin Late Model, Wisconsin
Late Model and LaCrosse Late Model) among the 15 divisions scheduled for
action.
The spacious paved track is located 12-miles east of the Mississippi River,
just north of Interstate 90 at the fairgrounds. Racing starts Thursday with
both the 1/4-mile action track and the 5/8 oval utilized. The remainder of the
weekend’s events will be contested on the larger track.
The featured event this year will be the Wisconsin Late Models running in an
open competition event for template super late models at a distance of
100-laps. A large field is expected as a record purse has been posted. A field
of 68 cars was narrowed to 27 for the main event last year with local favorite
Steve Holzhausen scoring a popular win.
From the time camper village opens Monday to well after the final checkered
flag on Championship Sunday, "Racing's Family Reunion" takes place
in the campground, along souvenir row, at the legendary after-race parties, in
the pits, at Sunday's pancake breakfast and throughout the fairgrounds.
The Oktoberfest race event was founded by promoter Larry Wehrs in 1970 with 65
stock cars racing, Tom Reffner winning, some 4000 fans watching and a purse of
around $7500.
Last year 556 racers competed for $148,000 in prize money with the expanded
four day racing format attracting over 18,000 fans. Tim Schendel scored the
Nascar Tour win. For the past 19 years, this event has been promoted by Jody
Deery and John McKarns along with general manager Chuck Deery.
Weekly Saturday night racing at the LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway concludes
September 2nd with a NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series 100-lapper. September 9th is
the track's 14th Annual "Eve of Destruction".
