(West Salem, WI – July 15, 2006) - Andy Burgess is back, and on a mission at
the LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway. Last Week’s Kwik Trip NASCAR Late
Model Feature ended with Burgess, of Fall Creek, Wis., falling out during a
last lap caution. But this week, one could see the determination
evaporate from his car just like tonight’s sweltering heat and
humidity. Burgess won the Brickl Bros 50 Lap Main, in dominating
fashion, leading 41 of 50 laps.
The tone was set for the entire race early on, as cars tangled on the first
lap, resulting in damage to Adam Degenhardt’s car and Ronnie Hawley’s car
ended up in the wall. Hawley was unable to continue, and on the restart,
an accordion effect caused a spin by second-generation driver Skylar
Holzhausen in turn three. The race was started again, and the next
yellow flew on lap 5, as Andy Niles spun in turn two. The race went
green again, and on the eighth lap, Burgess, who started sixth, passed Mike
Carlson for second. One lap later, Burgess gained the lead without much
of a fight from polesitter Bill Niles. Veteran Steve Holzhausen was not
going to let Burgess get away, and they raced nose to tail for the remainder
of the feature.
On Lap 13, the mishaps continued, as an accordion effect occurred in turn two,
involving six cars. Fast Qualifier Gib Scharpf and Chris Skrede suffered
the most damage, and were not able to continue. Several laps later,
Shawn Pfaff smacked the wall in turn four, while attempting a high-side pass
around Carlson. Pfaff’s orange Dodge slid down the frontstretch, and
hit the wall again in turn one, and was unable to continue. The numerous
cautions were just enough to allow veteran Steve Carlson, probably the fastest
car on the track, to catch the leaders after starting deep in the
pack.
The race’s final restart came with 12 laps to go, and it looked like Steve
Carlson’s car was the fastest, and could possible challenge for the
win. It appeared, however, that Carlson used up his tires trying to work
through traffic, and could not threaten Burgess or Holzhausen. Burgess
was able to hold on to win the Brickl Bros. 50. “I wasn’t worried
too much about Holzhausen, but I was worried about Carlson at that last
restart,” commented Burgess after the race. I pretty much knew what
Holzhausen had, but Carlson was kind of an unknown to me, since I hadn’t
raced with him yet tonight,” concluded Burgess.
Burgess regains ground on the point lead of Kevin Nuttleman, after last
week’s last lap mishap. At the start of the evening’s events,
Burgess had a 21 point deficit, but closed to within three of defending track
late model champion and NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series regional champion,
Nuttleman. Mark Lamoreaux continues to hang within reach, 42 points
behind, with Carlson 44 back.
The Brickl Bros. 15 for the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Grand National Sportsmen went
caution free, as Sparta’s Larry Bolster Jr. took his third feature win of
the 2006 season. This year has been a great comeback for Bolster after a
dismal 2005.
The United Auto Supply Thunderstox Division Brickl Bros. 15 Lap Feature had it
usual bumps, spins and mayhem, with Robert Stanfield on top at the checkered
flag. Stanfield was later disqualified, leaving the win to Sparta’s
Adam Moore, with Danny Fradette in Second and Justin Berg in Third
place.
Action Continues next weekend with another doubleheader. Friday night
will feature the second round of Street Drags, open to any street legal car,
truck, motorcycle, bus, motorhome, etc… Pits open at 6:30, Practice
runs begin at 7:00 and Drag Eliminations at 8:00. On Saturday Night,
Altra Federal Credit Union presents the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model action,
the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Grand National Sportsmen, and United Auto Supply
Thunderstox. Plus, it’s the first ever run for the new Tuners Division
– 4 cylinder cars with “special effects.” Qualifying is at 5:45
and the first race starts at 7:15. For more information, please contact
