(West Salem, WI - August 6, 2005) Rookie Chris Skrede was all set to earn his first Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model win, having led for 24 laps, and nearly all the way around on the 25th circuit. Andy Burgess was pushing the rookie on the outside, but was going to need a break to get the win. The break came on the final turn, as Skrede broke loose briefly, just enough to allow Burgess by for the win, his fourth of the season.

Skrede started on the outside of the front row, and jumped to the lead quickly, opening up a lead over second-place Todd Korish. Former track champ Steve Holzhausen used the outside line to move to third, and claimed second from Korish on lap four, and began to chase down the leader, who now had an eight-car advantage at the front.

Points leader Kevin Nuttleman moved to third by lap seven, and while Holzhausen closed in on the leader, Nuttleman seemed content to ride things out in third, with a solid lead over fourth-place J. Herbst. Nuttleman’s patience seemed to pay off on lap 13, when Jeff Baker spun in turn two, sending two cars into the infield, and John Towner hard into the outside retaining wall, bringing out the lone caution of the race.

Nuttleman was on the move on the restart, taking second on lap 14 as he ducked inside of Holzhausen in turn four. Two laps later, he was looking to the high line to get by Skrede, but the rookie held him off. On lap 22, Burgess seized the opportunity, ducking inside Nuttleman entering turn three to take second. Holzhausen and Herbst followed suit, pushing Nuttleman back to fifth.

Burgess was left with little time to make a move on Skrede, and one look to the outside on lap 24 yielded nothing. On the final lap, he powered to the outside entering turn two, and looked to be coming up a bit short, before Skrede’s bobble pushed Burgess to the lead at the checkereds.

Holzhausen held on to third at the finish, followed by Herbst, Nuttleman and Sam Andersen, the last rookie to take a feature win at La Crosse. Mark Lamoreaux, Korish, Tony Bagstad and Todd Oliver rounded out the top ten.

Lamoreaux and Burgess tied for the quickest lap in qualifying both clocking a 20.091 second lap at 97.730 MPH, but Lamoreaux claimed the top spot with a quicker second lap. Andy Niles won the B-Feature, while Adam Degenhardt claimed the qualifying heat race. The Bud Dash wins went to Holzhausen and Bill Niles.

Tom Thill jumped to lead in Sportsman feature from the pole, and Emily Sue Steck finally fought off Mike Albrecht, Jr. for second by lap eight, and closed on the lead car of Thill. She was on his rear bumper by lap 13, looking for a way around. The first caution of the race flew on lap 16, when Aaron Hass spun on the backstretch.

Thill got the jump on the restart, and Albrecht ducked under Steck, as she was unable to hold her position on the outside. The second yellow flew two laps later, as Mike Carlson lost an engine on the frontstretch. Thill had his hands full with Albrecht on the second restart, as the top two pulled away from Jes Tenner to settle the win for themselves. Albrecht outside through 3 and 4 last lap, not able to make the pass as Thill claimed his first win of the year. Tenner was third, followed by Larry Bolster, Jr., and Dan Linnehan.

Points leader Dan Gilster was the quick qualifier at 88.626 MPH, but spun early in the feature and finished 22nd. Matt Inglett won the B-Feature, qualifying heats went to Mike Carlson and Larry Bolster, Jr., while Gilster and Trent Boettcher won the Bud Dashes.

Robert Stanfield and Chad Oehler moved to the front of the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, and pulled away from the field. Joey Johnson weaved his way through the traffic, and began reeling them in, Cars 3-wide at the finish, as Johnson tried to get between the two leaders, but Stanfield held on for the win. Johnson took second when Oehler failed post-race inspection. Jerry Aylsworth, Brad Warthan and Greg Lindvig rounded out the top five.

Wayne Smith won the B-Feature, while Charles Vian, Jr. won the Bud Dash. Heat wins went to Jerry Aylsworth, Andy Moore Johnson and Mary Schill.

This Saturday night, the late models will run an extra five laps in the Kwik Trip 30. Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model qualifying kicks off at 5:05, followed by Sportsman qualifying, and the first Thunderstox heats take to the track at 7:15 p.m.
