Roffers and Wedelstadt Victorious in Antigo
By Jennifer Jach
July 23, 2004; Antigo, Wisconsin; Track conditions were perfect for a cool
night of racing action at the Langlade County Speedway. There were new
cars on hand and a packed grandstands. The nightly sponsor was the
Wisconsin Woodchucks Baseball Team. Luke Roffers blew by the competition
to win the WISSOTA Late Model Feature Event, while Mike Wedelstadt had to
battle for the top spot of the IMCA Modified Feature. Jeremy Christians
was the winner of the IMCA Stock Car Feature, Jeremy Wolfe won his first
Feature of 2004 in the WISSOTA Street Stocks, and Sean Thayer was the winner
of the Truck Feature.
The WISSOTA Late Model Feature seen Mark Mitchell take the pint, M.J. McBride
second and Todd Flannery third. Luke Roffers would shake things up a bit
with a pass on Flannery to take over third. Roffers was able to take
over second with a pass on McBride, but McBride would fight back and was able
to hang onto the position for a few more laps. Roffers waited a few laps
and again made his move on McBride, this time securing the second spot.
Roffers would waste no time reeling in the leader of Mitchell, and took the
inside line around for the lead. When the checkers flew it was Roffers
taking the win, Mitchell second, and Seegert third, in a caution free feature
race.
The IMCA Modified Feature seen Jeremy Hanson jump to the early lead with Scott
Williams second and Charlie Wild third. The top two would almost
immediately pull away from the rest of the field. Julie McDermid took
the inside line around Wild to take over third. The caution flag would
fly and on the restart, Hanson took the point, Schutt jumping into second, and
Williams third. Schutt was able to take over the lead with an inside
pass on Hanson, as Mike Wedelstadt would take over third and then second with
a three wide pass on McDermid and Williams. Wedelstadt then looked
to the outside of Hanson for second, and then reeled in the race leader.
The caution flag would fly once more and on this restart, Schutt took the
point, Wedelstadt second, and Hanson hanging on to third. Williams
worked his way around McDermid and Hanson to take over third. Wedelstadt
would move to the outside line as Schutt would be glued to the bottom of the
track. Wedelstadt would be able to move into the lead by only a few feet
when Schutt would fight back and regain his lead. When the white flag
flew it was Schutt in the lead by inches and Wedelstadt second, Wedelstadt was
able to pull ahead on the backstretch, and take the checkers. Runner-up
was Schutt, followed by Williams.
The Stock Car Feature seen Asa Doxtator take the point, Troy Jerovtz second,
and Greg Gutt third. Jeremy Christians took the inside line around Gutt
for the third spot, and then the inside line around Jerovtz for second.
B.J. Giese would make it three wide for the fourth position, coming out in the
third spot with Gutt fourth. Christians took the inside line around
Doxtator for the lead as Junior Karcz took over the fourth spot. Karcz
would take over second when Doxtator would get up in the loose stuff and fall
back a few positions.
The caution flag would fly and on the restart, Christians took the point,
Karcz second and Giese third. Shannon Volkman took the inside line
around Giese for third, but Giese was able to hang onto the position.
Volkman would once again look to the inside of Giese and would take over the
spot, with Jason Czarapata taking over the fourth spot. Czarapata would
get a flat tire and have to go to pit lane. Christians would remain in
the lead, Karcz second and Rod Snellenberger moved into the third spot.
When the laps were completed, it was Christians taking the win, Karcz second,
and Snellenberger third.
The WISSOTA Street Stock Feature seen Scott VanProoyen take the lead with
Jeremy Wolfe second and Bruce Belland third. The caution flag would fly
a few laps later and on the restart, VanProoyen took the point, Wolfe second,
and Belland third. Wolfe used the inside line to take over the lead, as
Bruce Belland looked to the outside of VanProoyen. VanProoyen would
fight back in the middle of the track with Belland to his high side and Wolfe
to his inside. Wolfe and VanProoyen left Belland in third, while they
raced wheel to wheel for the lead.
The caution flag flew once more and on the restart, Wolfe regained his
lead, VanProoyen second, and Belland third. Christian took the inside
line around Belland to take over third as Wolfe began pulling away from the
field. The caution flag flew for a third time and on this restart, Wolfe
took the point, VanProoyen second and Belland third. The green would not
last long as the caution flag flew again. Again Wolfe took the point,
Belland second and Lee Christjohn making his way into the top three. The
race would end when the next caution flag would fly due to the expiration of
the time limit. Wolfe was crowned with the win, Belland second and
Christjohn third.
In the Truck Feature, Jeremy Dake took the point followed by Leif Gunderson
and Jon Ripley. Dake’s lead would be short, as he would spin by
himself in turn two, Gunderson would take over the lead. Sean Thayer
took the inside line around Crandall, and then Ripley to take over the second
spot. Crandall would then loose his position to Mark Arrowood, as would
Ripley. Thayer would reel in the leader and took over the top position
with an outside pass. Mark Arrowood followed and took over second.
When the checkers flew it was Thayer taking the win, Arrowood second, and
Gunderson third.
Racing will resume next Friday night. Racing begins at 7:15. The
