Balog Wins First In IRA Red Cedar Sizzler
Menomonie, WI 8/25 In just his second season with the O'Reilly
Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Series, Alaska resident turned Wisconsin
sprint car driver, Billy Balog found victory lane as he captured the rain
delayed, curfew shortened IRA headliner at the Red Cedar Speedway. Balog
piloted the B$W Racing Tronson powered Hoosier Maxim to the $2500 win.
Following an hour rain delay on an already lightning fast track, front row
starter Steve Meyer set a blistering initial pace in the scheduled 25 lapper,
however on lap three Meyer made contact with Andy Hunt resulting with Hunt
taking a hard flip forcing a lengthy red. Hunt was transported and later
released, and Meyer's J&J needed a stop in the work area handing the lead
to front row mate Balog.
Balog too set a sizzling pace as feature lap times were faster than the
field's earlier qualifying times. Balog led surprise entrant Sam Hatertepe,
Travis Whitney, Mike Reinke, and a charging Scotty Neitzel until Neitzel
brought out the second red after finding trouble with lapped traffic and
ending his fine run.
Balog and Hafertepe took off and ran following the final restart and just flew
the final five laps before city ordinance's forced a early checker on lap
nineteen. For Balog, who was the 2005 IRA Rookie of the Year, this marked his
first 410 sprint car victory.
Hafertepe came home an impressive second in a rare 410 start for this ASCS
regular from Texas. Whitney topped Reinke, with Donny Goeden completing the
top five.
John Sernett topped the 28 car field in time trials however crashed in his
heat suffering enougfh damage to end his night early. John Haeni, Hafertepe,
and Scott Biertzer won the heats while Wayne Modjeski topped the B.
