Whitney Brings Masters Home At Cedar Lake

New Richmond, WI (Jun 16, 2006):  After loosing the first night of “The Masters” to rain, everyone was determined to get the Saturday nigh portion of the show in.  With rain forecasted once again, they would be tested.  It was a test they would pass, with flying colors.

Travis Whitney did record the fastest lap in time trials in Friday night’s portion of the show, only to see it washed away with the heavy rain.  Saturday night’s show would be a passing point system, sharing the bill with the Late Models.  With weather threatening, all heats were run at a blistering pace, with Steve Meyer, Scotty Neitzel, Donny Goeden and Billy Warren gathering heat race wins.  Travis Whitney would have to settle for a win in the B main after having to get off the throttle on two separate occasions in his heat race to avoid accidents.

Billy Warren took control of the 30 lap A-Main at the drop of the green from his 4th place starting position, and looked to be running his own race in the early stages, using the cushion to build momentum.  Third starting Brian Kristan stayed committed to the bottom and found himself running second early.  Lap six saw defending Masters Champion Scotty Neitzel starting the prowl as he moved his #2W up to forth.  By lap seven, the leaders were beginning to encounter lapped traffic.  Lap ten saw Neitzel challenging for Kristan for second place when the caution flew for Dave Uttech and Howie Gleason, sitting helplessly in turn three.  The restart did not fair well for Tommy Sexton who jumped the cushion in turn two and did a series of end over end rolls that destroyed his #83D sprinter.  Sexton wasn’t the only victim of turn two as Kim Mock also jumped the cushion and nailed the wall n turn two a few laps later, reverting his #1M sprinter to scrap.  Meanwhile, Whitney was moving his #9 into contention and on the restart following Mock’s flip, was moving into contention.  Lap #17 saw Warren also flirting with disaster when he too jumped the cushion.  While watching Warren wrestle the car from the wall, Neitzel took advantage and sailed to the lead, looking for his first win of 2006.  As laps wound down, Neitzel seemed on his way but a second place running Whitney was closing the gap and as the duo exited the forth turn on the final lap, Whitney was able to cut down and it became a drag race to the checkered flag.  At the stripe, Whitney inched by Neitzel, becoming the first repeat winner in IRA competition in 2006.  Warren fought back and would settle for third with Kristan and 14th starting Mike Reinke following.

The series flies back into action on Sunday, June 25th when the series brings it’s high horse-powered action to the Eagle Valley Raceway in Jim Falls (WI) for the very first time.  Fans will want to be sure to experience this inaugural event that will see a drivers meeting at 5pm with racing to follow shortly.  Jim Falls is located North-East of Chippewa Falls, WI.  For complete scheduling information, contact the track.
