Warren Wins Wilmot's Wayne Daun Memorial
by Paul Pittman

Wilmot, WI   Bill Warren won the rain shortened Bumper to Bumper / United Trailers IRA Outlaw Sprints Wayne Daun Memorial at the Wilmot Speedway after 23 of the scheduled 30 laps had been completed. Warren piloted the Bob Warren Automotive / Hoosier / Maxim to the win.

From the time of the very first heat race, sprinkles and dark clouds hit the speedway, but on lap 23 the caution flew for just the second time during the A, however the rain picked up at that time forcing the event to be deemed complete with Warren picking up a well deserved victory.

The first eight laps of the A looked more like a past MSA 360 show up front, than a IRA Outlaw 410 race as past MSA champions KJ Skelton and Warren, now both full time IRA competitors, ran first and second. Donny Goeden & Mike Reinke joined the lead pair as the foursome pulled away slightly from the rest of the field. Both Warren and Goeden slipped past Skelton by lap twelve and the two battled hard for the lead for the next few circuits until Goeden in an effort to slip under Warren hit the infield tire barrier in turn four breaking his front-end and ending his night.

Warren moved out to nearly a straight-a-way lead as Skelton, Reinke, and Dave Mouils entertained the crowd as they raced thru a steady drizzle in a battle for the runnerup spot. By lap nineteen Reinke took command of the position and set sail after the leader on the high-side. Skelton continued in third as Moulis, Todd Hepfner, Scott Biertzer, and Tommy Sexton waged war for top five positions.

By lap twenty-two Reinke was noticably closing the gap as Warren began encountering lapped traffic. Skelton was now in a contest for third with a hard charging Todd Hepfner, with Biertzer roaring past Moulis for fifth.

With the rain beginning to pick-up Rick Kelsey who was in a battle for a top ten position made contact with the infamous turn four inside barraier breaking his front-end, coming to rest on the track and forcing a yellow. During the yellow, the rain picked up even more and before the the green would wave again the damage had been done to the speedway forcing what was looking to be a thriller to be cut seven laps short. Warren was thrown the yellow/checkered at 9:20 pm.

Goeden paced the 42 car field in time trials. Heat race wins went to Goeden, Skelton, Moulis, and Sexton. Travis Whitney and Steve Meyer both claimed B-main wins.
