Young Wins Wild Oshkosh IRA Go
by Paul Pittman

Oshkosh, WI   Scott Young's win was overshadowed by a wild night of racing at the fast, circular Powercom SpeedZone in Oshkosh Wisconsin which hosted the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Series Tuesday night. Thirty-nine cars signed in with Randy Hannagan setting fast time over the field. Heat race wins went to Hannagan, Mike Stefka, Kurt Winker, and Young. Past IRA Champions John Haeni and Joe Roe captured the twin B's.

The heat races were fierce with four cars transferring from each, and 3 also being added from each B creating a 22 car A.

The A-main got off on a bad note as heat race winner and eighth starting Stefka spun exiting turn four on the initial lap triggering a multi-car melee which involved Roe, Haeni, Steve Meyer, Charley Osborn, Rick Kelsey, Mike Kertscher, and Donny Goeden with several getting upside down. Only Kelsey, Kertscher, and Goeden would restart.

As action finally got underway, KJ Skelton would lead followed by a good battle between Neitzel, Hannagan, Young, Todd Hepfner, and Mike Reinke. Eventually Hannagan would take over second and began the chase of Skelton, though Skelton was up for the challenge.

Despite a restart with Hannagan right on his bumper, Skelton would stay in control, fighting off a Hannagan slide job and actually pulling away from the outlaw star. Winker joined the battle for third with Neitzel, Young, Hepfner, and Reinke as the group swapped spots nearly every lap.

Hannagan's bid would end as he exploded a right rear, possibly from picking up debris from the earlier wreck, the damage from the blown tire damaging the car enough to force his retirement.

On the restart, Skelton made his only mistake of the race as he stumbled approaching the cone allowing Young a run, resulting in a Young slide job which took the IRA point contender to victory. Skelton and current IRA point leader Neitzel would follow.

Andy Hunt, Tim Haddy, and Billy Balog took nasty rides during hotly contested heat race action, while Ryan Irwin found himself upside down in during a B start.
