Whitney Completes Sweep With Victory At Deer Creek
by Paul Pittman
Spring Valley, MN (Jun 25, 2005): The highbanks of the Deer Creek
Speedway were a welcome sight to the teams that made the tow to the Spring
Valley (MN) facility, along with a packed grandstand and a more than friendly
atmosphere. Expectations were high of the visiting Bumper to Bumper IRA
Outlaw Sprint Series on their inaugural visit and those expectations were soon
realized when the existing track record was shattered unofficially in hot
laps. John Sernett would establish the official track record during time
trials, turning a lap of 12.592 seconds. In all, every car that took the
green would qualify under the old record. Fans were
impressed.
Heat race action would see Jim Melis bring out the night’s first red flag
when his #51M got pinched against the outside retaining wall, sending him into
a series of end over end flips that would end his night. Jim was not
hurt in the incident. Randy Anderson would go on to win the heat in the
first night out in his new Marty Johnson owned #81. Billy Warren would
go on to win the second heat in convincing fashion, while Steve Meyer help
Mike Reinke at bay for the win in his and Kim Mock took the B-Main. Fans
were amazed.
Scott Biertzer would take control of the 30 lap A-Main event early and led the
first 20 laps, weathering 2 cautions and a red flag for Wayne Modjeski (who
was unhurt in a minor roll over but unable to continue). Lapped traffic
would prove to be Biertzer’s undoing as the lap 20 caution allowed Travis
Whitney, who was rapidly moving towards the front from his 9th starting
position, to close up on back bumper.
The restart saw Whitney take a look to Biertzer’s outside entering turn #1
and then dive by for the lead out of turn #2. Once Whitney assumed the
lead, the focus shifted to the ensueing battle for 3rd between Scotty Neitzel,
Scott Young and Steve Meyer. As laps clicked off, Meyer would loose the
others when trying to maneuver lapped traffic, while Young and Neitzel worked
by Biertzer. Young would get by Neitzel and with a final yellow for
Scott Uttech, who lost a rear end and came to a stop trying to exit the
speedway, fuel became to be an issue for several teams. “I was really
leaning it out on the last yellow because I knew it was getting close,”
stated Joe Roe in a post race interview. Mike Kertscher echoed Roe’s
thoughts, stating that he knew his fuel supply was also getting very
low. The final laps saw Whitney get a good jump on Young and Neitzel,
who went on to sweep the weekend for the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint
Series. Jerry Richert Jr, who had fallen back a bit, battled back to a
forth place finish while Biertzer held on for fifth.
The Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Series celebrates the 4th of July
holiday with a visit to the Sheboygan County Fair Park on Saturday, July 2nd
in Plymouth, WI. Then, on Sunday July 3rd, the series moves north to the
Luxemburg Speedway in Luxemburg, WI. For admission pricing and times,
