Johnson Takes IRA Win At Cedar Lake
by Paul Pittman

New Richmond, WI  (Jun 17, 2005):  “The Masters!”  The name alone conjures up visions of good hard racing and that is exactly what the fans got on Friday night at the Cedar Lake Speedway.

Beginning with time trial for the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Series, Wayne Johnson signaled that he was there for business as he established the time to beat with a lap of 11.530 seconds.  Johnson would then go on to win his heat race.  Other heat race winners included Ricky Logan, Jim Melis and Todd Hepfner.  Joe Roe and Jerry Richert Jr both split the twin-Bs.

Scott Young assumed the early command of the 25 lap A-Main, on a remarkably smooth and racy track.  Young would hold off a charging Scott Neitzel until Young jumped the cushion between turns 3 and 4, opening up the door for Neitzel.  Taking advantage of the opening, Neitzel would continue to set the pace until just passed half way, when Johnson, working through traffic and searching the track for the fastest way around, finally managed to catch and then pass Neitzel.  Soon after encountering lapped traffic, an incident involving Jerry Richert Jr and Scott Biertzer, Scott Young, and Joe Roe also resulted in a flag fag when a helpless Kurt Davis encountered the melee, slammed into Richert’s stranded #55 and rolled over.  During the red, Uttech was abloe to change a tire but was relegated to the tail of the field.  Of those involved, only Roe and Davis would fail to return.

The restart saw Johnson begin to put some distance between himself and Neitzel, who found himself in a battle for third with Ricky Logan.  Neitzel and Logan would continue their battle into the waning laps with Logan finally getting by Neitzel with two laps to go.  Not giving up, Neitzel drove his #2W deep into turn #1 and was able to pull back ahead of Logan approaching the checkered flag.

The Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Series rolls back into action once again as part of “the Masters on June 18th with a passing points system in place and the Late Models qualifying.
