Tatnell Aces Filskov Classic At Plymouth
by Paul Pittman
Plymouth, WI (Oct 2, 2004): The Frank Filskov Memorial “Fall Classic” is a
date that Bumper to Bumper Outlaw Sprint Series teams and fans circle on their
calendars as soon as the season schedule is released. It’s a special date to
IRA teams, paying homage to one of their own. It has also become a date that
is standing out in the sprint racing community as well and it was never more
evident than it was Saturday night when 53 teams from all over the mid-west
converged on a little town just south of Green Bay. Now, the entire sprint
racing family was honoring Frank.
A very fast track greeted the 53 teams on a crisp fall evening, with all of
the 51 teams that attempted to qualify turning 100+ mph laps. In fact, no less
than five drivers tripped the clock under Joey Saldana’s previous record
when the World of Outlaws visited in July. When it was all said and done, it
was Travis Whitney on top of the standings setting his second track record in
as many events with a tour of the third mild oval in 11.065 seconds, a full 3
tenths of a second quicker than Saldana.
Rusty Egan lead the field to the checkered flag in the Last Chance event to
get into the B-Main, while Kim Mock, Scott Neitzel, Brooke Tatnell and Mike
Reinke all took their heat races.
Terry McCarl and John Haeni split the twin B-Mains.
Mike Reinke tried to get a good launch from his outside front row starting
spot in an effort to pick up 5th win of the season, but as his yellow #02 slid
high in turn #2, the car hooked up and in an effort to save the car from
spinning, lifted the front end in to the air when momentum took over, rolling
the car and brining out the red. Unable to make repairs, Reinke would retire
from the event.
This now put Whitney outside of Mike Kertscher on the front row and when the
green dropped, Kertscher grabbed the point. Whitney would soon find himself on
the defensive end as the leaders entered traffic when Brooke Tatnell began
effectively applying pressure.
While all of this action was happening up front, Joe Roe, Terry McCarl and
Jason Solwold were raging an incredible race within the race for position
through traffic themselves.
Once Tatnell got by Whitney, (bringing Scott Neitzel along), he quickly closed
the gap and used that same traffic to gain the lead. Neitzel would move to
second in an effort to run down the leader, but Tatnell would never look back
and go one to pick up the win. Neitzel, who managed to stay with striking
distance of Tatnell until the waning laps, would finish second ahead of
Whitney, cementing his championship run in 2004.
Andy Hunt, secured the Rookie of the Year honors despite experiencing his
first flip and only flip of the season.
The Annual IRA Awards Banquet has been scheduled for Saturday December 4th at
