Hanson Takes MARS 100 At I-94 Raceway
Youngest Driver To Win Series Event
By Dean Reller
SAUK CENTRE, MN (July 2, 2005) - Andy Hanson scored a breakthrough win by
turning in a dominant run in the Midwest Allstar Racing Series (MARS) Super
Late Model 100 lap July Spectacular at the I-94 Raceway in Sauk Centre.
Twenty-two MARS Super Late Models took the green flag in front of the largest
crowd in several years to watch a race at I-94 Raceway. Polesitter JR
Studniski took the lead, with Bob White right behind. Fourth starting Tim
Olson got by White and then turned up the heat on Studniski. Olson took the
lead on lap nine leaving Studniski and White to fight it out for second. Jon
Olson brought out a yellow, when he crashed into the turn one wall. Tim Olson
held the lead on the restart with White looking to make a bid. White would run
alongside for several laps, but Olson continued to show the way. Meanwhile,
ninth starting Hanson was coming on strong as he slowly picked off cars on his
way towards the front. Hanson would take second on lap 37. A short battle for
the lead ensued, before Hanson moved past Olson exiting turn four on lap 46.
Once in the lead, Hanson quickly distanced himself as he extended his lead to
nearly a half of a lap, before Bryan Roach brought out a caution for his spin
on lap 78. Hanson blasted away on the restart to a full straightaway
advantage, only to see it erased when DJ Dondelinger and Jeff Lofquist got
tangled up on the backstretch with about 10 laps remaining. When the green
waved again, Hanson took off leaving Tim Olson to race with Nate Thiesse, who
came from the back of the pack. Thiesse would move into second with a handful
of laps left, but it was too late to do much more as Hanson had again moved to
a full straightaway lead by the time he took the checkered flag. 16-year-old
Hanson, who recently got his driver’s license became the youngest driver
ever to win a MARS Super Late Model event.
Kevin Woeste made a show of it as he pulled off a last lap pass to win the ASA
Modified Feature. Jerry Voigt started on the pole and assumed the lead as
everyone jockeyed for position behind. Seventh starting Woeste ran hard with
Rich Snyder for several laps, before he took the second spot with eight laps
to go. Unchallenged, Voigt pulled to a sizable lead only to see it slowly
shrink in the final laps as Woeste reeled him in. With the white flag waving,
Woeste pulled in behind Voigt setting up a dash to the finish. Exiting the
final turn, Woeste stuck his car to the bottom and that was all he needed to
edge his way across the line to take the win.
Dirk Henry capped off a clean sweep, by winning the Great North Legends
Feature. Cal Lease took the lead right away, but fast-timer and fourth
starting Henry was in a hurry as he shot by on the race’s second lap. Lease
gave Henry run for his money for a few laps, before Henry blasted away from
everyone. Tim Brockhouse and Zac Davids rallied late as they raced for second.
Out front, Henry was untouchable as he cruised to the win. Davids was able to
wrestle his car past Brockhouse to take the runner-up spot.
Patrick Amelung nursed his car home to win the ASA Thunder Car Feature. Joe
Karl used his outside pole to take the lead from the start. Lee McDougall held
second for a while, before mechanical problems would force him from the race.
Third starting Amelung squeezed by Karl on lap six to take the lead. Amelung
moved to nearly a full straightaway lead despite a misfiring engine. Jim
Larkin made a bid in the final five laps, but ran out of time to get close as
Amelung went on to the win.
David Bolstad showed he still has the right stuff as he put himself back in
Victory Lane following the UCAR Feature. Bolstad started on the pole and
wasted no time in taking advantage as Curt Peterson stayed right with him in
second. Peterson would exit on lap 13 with transmission problems. Dan Bolstad
moved up to second, but with only a few laps to go, Andy Mayavski was able to
get that position. Meanwhile, David Bolstad continued to run his own race as
he tore of the laps on his way to the win.
