Hensel Dominates Late Model Return To Fox Ridge
(ARCADIA, Wisc) - - On a cloudy, damp and chilly Friday night some racing
faithful made the trek over to FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY, in Arcadia, WI, for the
2006 SEASON OPENER!
While steady rains and cold winds around the area convinced many racers and
race fans to skip the trip, those who showed up were treated to some fast
action on an expertly prepared racing surface.
HENSEL WINS LATE MODEL FEATURE
18-year-old WISSOTA Late Model sensation Adam Hensel dominated the
division’s return to FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY winning both the season opening heat
race and the evening’s 18-lap feature!
“You’re carrying so much momentum here, it’s amazing.” Commented the
2005 WISSOTA Late Model Rookie of the year, “where I was running the track
was awesome!”
Hensel held off a race starting challenge by Tim Isenberg before pulling away
to a commanding lead that he never once relinquished through the
green-to-checkered event. “I saw that there was some action down in the new
lower groove,” added the Barron, WI teenager referring to the newly reworked
lower groove, “but, from where I was there was no need to hunt down
there.”
Hensel kept his ‘Mastersbilt by Mars’ Late Model up at the top of the high
banking and stretched his lead all the way to the checkered flag.
FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY 2003 Late Model Track Champion Steve Isenberg closed in
slightly on his son Tim’s ride as the race neared it’s conclusion, but
could never quite get close enough to actually challenge for the second place
spot. Son Tim Isenberg beat Father Steve to the checkered by several car
lengths.
Winona, MN’s Lance Mathees and Edina, MN’s Andrew McKay completed the
top-5 as the checkered flag waved.
KONKEL CONQUERS USRA MODIFIEDS
After settling for a second place finish in the evening’s opening heat race,
Caledonia, MN’s Ron Konkel jumped from the outside of the front row and
never looked back to lead the USRA Modified feature flag to flag to collect
the season opening feature win.
“You couldn't ask for a better track anywhere on opening night."
Commented Konkel while talking with pole sitter, and second place finisher,
Tim Donlinger.
Despite settling for second after winning the opening heat race, Donlinger
concurred about the racing surface, “It really was a nice track, I didn’t
quite have the power I needed to get up there and challenge for the feature
win, but the handling and the track were great.”
Veterans Rick Hauser and Gary Doelle finished third and fourth respectively,
with Brad Waits rounding out the top-5.
DEFENDING TRACK CHAMPS OPEN WITH FEATURE WINS
Defending track champions Ryan Olson and Danny Hanson and Mark Bornitz all
opened their 2006 FOX RIDGE seasons with feature wins.
Olson passed a three-car pack, all battling for the lead, in the closing laps
of the WISSOTA MIDWEST MODIFIED Feature to grab the win.
“I don’t know what happened to the 68 (Tyler Clark – who’d opened up a
commanding lead over the first two-thirds of the feature, only to falter in
the closing laps) but he slowed and stacked up the other cars behind him.”
“I didn’t like the way the car drove in the heat race,” continued Olson,
“but in the feature, when they all bunched up like that, I pointed the car
where I wanted it and it handled perfectly; cleared them down low for the
win.”
2005 WISSOTA STREET STOCK champion Danny Hanson also had to use a late race
pass to open his season with a win. “(It) was like racing on glass out
there, the track was perfect.” Said Hanson after the win. First heat race
winner Michael Conrad lead the feature early, then battled side-by-side on the
wide racing surface with Hanson for several laps before Hanson’s #5
completed the pass and took the feature win.
Arcadia’s Kylan Gamez finished third with Winonan Fred Prudoehl and Matt
Wolfe fourth and fifth respectively.
Mark Bornitz battled a handful of other front runners before squirting to the
front of the field to begin his 2006 season just as he’d finished his 2005
season – by winning. The defending 4-Cylinder Hornets Champion grabbed the
feature and opening heat race win, with Michael Peters winning the second heat
race.
DREGNEY OPENS WITH SUPER WIN
“Yeah, you know, it’s nice to get the first win out of the way early,”
smiled Mondovi, WI’s Rodney Dregney, “Dan (Arneson) was running really
smooth there and I needed to find a line that would let me clear him. But, the
track was great and I could put my car wherever I wanted, or needed, to make
the pass.”
Arneson finished second with Grand Meadow, MN’s Cole Queensland battling
back from an early race mishap to finish third after winning the night’s
opening heat race.
RACING RESUMES FRIDAY MAY 5th
Hopefully Mother Nature will produce a more fan and driver friendly evening of
weather as week two opens up Friday night May 5th at ‘THE BIG 3/8-MILE’.
Many drivers have expressed a desire to return to FOX RIDGE, but the bad
weather thwarted many plans to attend. Additionally, several committed Late
Model drivers were still making repairs to their cars after damaging accidents
elsewhere last week.
All six divisions will be on the track again next weekend with hot laps
beginning at 7 and the first green flag waving at 7:30. Visit the official FOX
RIDGE SPEEDWAY web site at www.foxridgespeedway.com
for additional information related to Friday night action at THE RIDGE.
