July Heats Up The On-Track Action At Fox Ridge Speedway
(ARCADIA, Wisconsin) - - The first day of July provided an excellent summer
day with which to begin the extended Fourth of July weekend – and even
better to enjoy a night of dirt-track action at Arcadia’s FOX RIDGE
SPEEDWAY.
For Rollingstone, MN’s Bob Timm, the starting of a new month provided him
with a turning point in the year. While he’s been strong this entire season,
racking up a top-five finish in all seven of his feature starts, Timm had yet
to roll into Victory Lane at the conclusion of a USRA Modified feature. The
winless drought came to an end Friday night.
Coming from the outside of the eighth row, Timm was presented with the
ultimate in challenges – the need to pass the ENTIRE field if he wanted the
right to visit Victory Lane. That’s just what Timm did.
Over the twenty-lap main event, Timm evaded cautions and worked the field en
route to his first feature win of 2005. But the win came not without some
late-race work. Over the final six laps, second heat-race winner Les Duellman
overcame a hefty deficit to reel in Timm’s #49 and challenge him for the
win.
“I found a line, late in the race,” explained Duellman, “that allowed me
to drive into the corners quite a bit deeper.” Duellman was not, however,
able to make the necessary pass for the lead and settled for second.
For Timm, though, it was a refreshing return to Victory Lane, after some
recent changes, “We had been making little adjustments to the setup through
the first half of the year,” explained the 2001 Late Model Champion at FOX
RIDGE, “But we decided a couple weeks ago to try something completely
different; so we made some major changes and it helped us last week and gave
us the win tonight.”
Former point leader Brad Waits finished third with both Jason Marten and Matt
Sweeney enjoying strong finishes in the top-five.
THE DEAN FAMILY VISITS VICTORY LANE
Fall Creek, WI’s Wayne Dean made his fifth visit to Victory Lane after
working past Fountain City’s Tom Hund midway through the WISSOTA Street
Stock Feature and leading all the way to the finish of the 15-lap event. The
win was satisfying for Dean, who’d struggled over the past couple weeks,
“We tried a new rear end in the car and it just wasn’t happening,”
explained Dean, “So, this week we went back to the other rear end and I’m
right back to where it works again.”
But even more enjoyable that the win for Dean, was the celebration afterwards
in Victory Lane, “Hey, wasn’t that cool in Victory Lane?” asked Dean,
referring to his son joining him for the photos after the feature, “My son
holding the checkered flag with me – that was cool!”
Hund put forth a commendable challenge over the final laps, closing to within
half a car length of Dean’s rear bumper, but for the second week in a row,
Hund needed to be satisfied with second.
First Heat race winner Chuck Nerland took home a strong third with Darryll
Foegen collecting his season best feature finish in fourth just in front of
Michael Conrad.
CONTROVERSIAL WIN FOR EARNEY
Cochrane, WI’s Dennis Earney picked up his sixth WISSOTA Super Stock feature
win of the year under less than optimal circumstances. With defending track
Champion Troy Brand starting from the pole and leading the first half of the
feature, Earney worked from the outside of the fifth row towards the front.
Using an incredibly fast high line, Earney rocketed through the field before
closing in on Brand’s #177. After several runs by Earney’s brought his #4
up along side the leader, Brand altered his line and started running the high
line in what some might consider a defensive stance. As the two battled for
the lead, the slightest of contact in between turns one and two turned Brand
around and handed the lead to Earney.
“You know, I’d never to anything like that on purpose.” Commented Earney
after picking up the win, “I was getting such and incredible entry into the
corners up high that it was amazing. Troy came up, I guess to take my line
away, and I simply had nowhere to go - we hardly even touched, but it was just
enough to break his traction and he went around.”
To Brand’s credit, he gained a lot of fans and respect when he refused to
simply sit on the track and draw a caution. Brand whipped his car around and
rejoined the race and soldiered on to a seventh place finish.
Alma’s Justin Sass enjoyed his best ever feature finish with a strong second
place run just in front of Travis Wagner, who also enjoyed his best feature
finish of the year. “We’ve made some changes over the past couple of weeks
that have REALLY helped,” explained Sass, “The track was just right for
me, the car worked about the best I’ve ever had it and we had a good run.”
HESCH WINS
Arcadia’s Dan Hesch finally made a return visit to Victory Lane, after
passing Bobby Bautch for the lead after a mid-race restart. Bautch had lead
early, and had held off several strong challenges by Hesch, but couldn’t
quite hold off his final effort.
Hesch’s #E-85 WISSOTA Midwest Modified led the closing laps to claim his
second feature win of 2005. Ryan Olson worked past Bautch on the outside to
finish second.
A SWARM OF HORNETS ENTERTAINS
The 4-Cylinder Hornets feature was huge crowd pleaser as the 24-car field
raced the entire feature as if it were the last lap of the Daytona 500!
Three-wide battles throughout the field were the norm with four and five-wide
battles erupting on a regular basis.
By the time the checkered flag few, it was Division point leader Mark Bornitz
collecting his second feature win of the 2005 season, followed closely by Joel
Hesch and second heat-race winner Robert Carpenter.
