Olson And Brand Snare First Feature Wins At Fox Ridge Speedway
(Arcadia, WI) - - With a hot, humid and muggy Friday evening signaling the
approach of summer, fans and racers alike decided to start the weekend with a
visit to FOX RIDGE SPEDWAY in Arcadia, WI for some dirt-track action during
‘FASTENAL COMPANY Night at The Ridge’.
A solid crowd settled into the stadium-styled grandstands as nearly 100 cars
attacked the high-banks of ‘The Big 3/8 Mile’ with enthusiasm.
Similar to evenings past, the on-track action presented the crowd with another
first time winner – this time in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified division.
After Jeff Brauer and Ben Anderson collected their 3rd and 2nd heat race wins
of the season, respectively, Ryan Olson saddled himself at the front of the
field for almost the entirety of the evenings feature event and never allowed
himself to drop from the top spot.
The previous week’s feature winner Travis Krause followed Olson the entire
feature but simply could not get up along side the 20 year old Strum, WI racer
to actually challenge him for the win.
Olson, who suffered a blown motor last week, subsequently loosing the point
lead in the track point standings, put on a solid performance to pick up his
first feature win, “This is a new chassis for me this year,” commented the
first time feature winner, “last year we ran ok, but Scott Duval’s been
helping me with setup this year and it’s made a huge difference.”
Krause finished second with Dean Hoffman completing the top-3.
LONG TIME COMING FOR TROY BRAND
It’s hard to believe, but with just one week remaining before ‘Mid-Season
Championships’, two-time defending track champion Troy Brand was still
waiting for a feature win. That lengthy wait came to an end Friday night with
the WISSOTA Super Stock Feature.
“Two weeks ago I blew up bad,” explained Brand when asked of his troubles
getting to victory lane this season, “ruined everything from the motor back
through the drive train to even the rear end. Last week the car simply had no
power. So we pulled that engine and put in our back-up engine for tonight and
I win the feature!”
Even though brand commented that he felt like he was down on power with the
‘back-up engine’, he pulled away from the field and headed straight for
Victory Lane. Winona’s Jon Duffy had his best night of the ’05 season
racing to a second place finish while holding off challenges from first heat
race winner Rodney Dregney.
FENSKE BACK FOR A FOURTH
“I was having an absolute blast,” smiled Karl Fenske after picking up his
fourth USRA Modified feature win of the season. “Running down Ron (Brittain),”
continued Fenske, referring to the fellow Dirt-Dueller Chassis driver, and
first heat-race winner, who lead the first half of the feature, “now THAT
was fun. I’ll tell you, these Dirt-Dueller’s have what it takes. Ron was
driving great and I was just closing in little by little lap after lap.”
Unfortunately, it was a lapped car who factored into the change for the lead,
“I didn’t even know Karl was coming,” commented Brittain, “I saw the
lapped car and I just picked the wrong line.” Brittain closed in on the #9
of Les Jonsgaard to put him a lap down approaching turn one. Brittain headed
to the top groove, unfortunately, Jonsgaard heeded the ‘lay-over’ flag and
also headed towards the top-groove. With Brittain slowing to avoid contact,
Fenske ducked to the bottom of the banking and never looked back.
A late race caution closed up the field, but Fenske was able to step away and
collect the win.
The highlight of the feature came mid-way through the event as Paul Hamernik
and Bob Timm spent almost 10 straight laps dueling for the third spot –
almost entirely side by side! “The car just got tighter as the feature went
on,” commented Hamernik, “it was fun racing, but now if I could just keep
the car looser for the entire feature, then we’ll be headed in the right
direction.
WEHLAGE WINS
Stockton, MN’s Shawn Wehlage proved that winning from deep in the field was
possible as he picked up his second WISSOTA Street Stock feature win of the
season by first clearing early race leader Cory Hanson and then leading the
rest of the way to the checkered flag. Coming from tenth in the starting
line-up Wehlage added the feature win to his heat race win to make it a
perfect night at the track.
After starting sixteenth in the seventeen car lineup, Danny Hanson likewise
battled through the field for a strong second place finish. Hometown hero
Kylan Gamez completed the top-three.
CARPENTER TOPS THE HORNETS
Black River Falls four-cylinder racer Robert Carpenter likewise enjoyed a
‘perfect evening’ winning both the third heat race and the evening’s
4-Cylinder Hornet feature. Alan Van Vleet and Wayne Maug rounded out the
top-three.
’Mid Season Championships’ are next Friday night June 17th at FOX RIDGE
SPEEDWAY with the USMTS Modified special the following week (June 24th).
