Brink Breaks Into Victory Lane At Fox Ridge

(ARCADIA, WI) - - In the mind of every racer there are certain events which are committed to memory – as if branded directly onto the very membranes of their brain. Events of such impact that they’ll be remembered, reflected upon, and talked about for as long as they breath.

The driver’s very first start – regardless of whether it was successful, destructive or embarrassingly slow – is a moment never forgotten. Their first accident – metal bending, sparks flying, muscles tensing and then the subsequent hours back at the shop fixing – is an incident never forgotten. And then there’s the first win.

The first heat race win is thrilling, a moment to cherish. But that memory pales in comparison to the first Feature race win. Friday night, at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY, Winonan Tom Brink etched one of those moments into his memory.

After starting from the pole for the second WISSOTA Midwest Modified heat race, Brink dominated all the way to the checkered flag – his first heat race win of 2005. For the evening’s feature event, Brink lined his #77 up on the outside of the second row.

At the drop of the green flag, pole sitter, and defending 2004 Track Champion Harlan Morehart jumped away from the field and set a fast pace. Brink was able to work around the #74 of Bob Bautch and began reeling in Morehart.

Brink was able to close in on Morehart but never quite get up along side to take away the lead. Then, with just two laps remaining, a caution slowed the field. And that’s when the unthinkable happened to Morehart’s car, as the field took the yellow flag and slowed to begin regrouping for the restart, Moreharts engine expired! Belching thick smoke like a factory smokestack, Morehart lost the lead while not even racing.

Brink inherited the lead and covered the final two laps with nary a challenge en route to his very first Feature win! Dan Hesch and Bautch finished second and third respectively, with first heat race winner Jeff Brauer fourth and current point leader Ryan Olson completing the top-5.

EARNEY SETTING A STREAK OF HIS OWN
Much talk has been made, and deservedly so, about the current three feature winning streak the Karl Fenske has put together in the USRA Modified Division. But let’s not forget to apply some credit to a very similar scenario which has opened up in the WISSOTA Super Stock Division.

Cochrane’s Dennis Earney is now, likewise, the owner of a three feature winning streak! And Earney is working for his checkered flags. Four weeks ago, Earney pounced on an opportunity on the final lap of the Super Stock Feature to pick up his first feature win of the year. Last Friday night Earney battled from a tenth place starting spot to make it two feature wins in a row.

Friday night, May 27th, Earney capitalized on an offered opening and shot to the front. The man of the night was Rodney “Mr. Excitement” Dregney. Starting from the inside of the sixth row Dregney worked through the field as if shot from a cannon!

Working both low and high, Dregney began battling for the lead after just a handful of green-flag laps. After working to the front Dregney’s night took a critical turn for the worse. Exiting turn two, Dregney’s black #88 slapped the back straight wall and climbed the concrete leaving just the two left side tires on the ground before slamming back down onto all four.

The top several cars in the field filed past – dropping Dregney back in the pack and outside the top-5. Dregney regrouped and began another charge towards the front. Dregney worked all the way back up to second before looping his car in turn four in front of the on coming field.

The pack bearing down on him began evasive maneuvers, some going high, some going low – and some headed directly for him. Dregney put his entire foot back into the throttle, one would assume in hopes of getting out of the way of the oncoming traffic, only to drive directly in the path of Kelly Anderson’s #8!

The impact was solid, direct and hard. The right side of Dregney’s machine was bent almost all the way into the centerline of his car, Anderson’s front end was severely bent as well. Several other cars were likewise swept up into the melee, including Dan Nissalke’s #22 which sat idle at the bottom of the exit of turn four.

As the toe truck crew tried clearing the track of the remains of Nissalke’s car, the skies opened – dumping a hard down pour on the track that immediately concluded the evening’s racing.

And circling the track at the front of the field when the rains came? Why, Dennis Earney, of course – proud new owner of a three feature winning streak.

Second heat race winner Troy Langowski finished second with pole sitter Justin Sass rounding out the top-3. First heat race winner Ashley Anderson was credited with a fourth place feature win.

FEAST OR FAMINE FOR WAYNE DEAN
Fall Creek, Wisconsin’s Wayne Dean has lived both ends of the extremes this season and FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY. He’s either ended his evening in Victory Lane with a Feature win, or loaded on the trailer with a broken car. Luckily for Dean, the ‘Feast’ portion of this season’s scenario slight out-weighs the ‘Famine’ portion on his results list.

Friday night it was back to the ‘Feast’ end of the spectrum as Dean and his red and white #17 collected feature victory number four!

After opening up a lengthy lead on the rest of the field, Dean felt some heavy pressure from second heat race winner Danny Hanson over the closing laps. As lapped traffic played negatively into Dean’s momentum. But the same lapped traffic also hindered Hanson’s ability to challenge for the lead.

As the checkered flag waived, it was Dean collecting the feature win with Hanson second and Michael Conrad, continuing his improvements to an already strong season, finishing third. First heat race winner Andy Bohnstengel crossed the line fourth.

MIKE THOMPSON GRABS FIRST FEATURE
4-Cylinder Hornet’s driver Mike Thompson lost the lead and then battled back to retake it on the way to collecting his first feature win of the 2005 season.

With a jack-rabbit like jump at the waiving of the green flag, Thompson flew to the lead. First heat race winner Justin Yahnke was able to work about Thompson to take the lead for a couple laps before Thompson regain sole possession of the top spot and held on for the feature win.

Third heat race winner Murry Keatley, visiting from Iowa, finished third behind Yahnke with Joel Hesch and second heat race winner Mark Bornitz finishing out the top-5.

Trempealeau’s Chris Gilbertson transferred to the A-Main by winning the B-Feature and finished a strong seventh.

RAIN POSTPONES USRA FEATURE
The rains that concluded the Super Stock feature forced the USRA feature to be postponed until next Friday night. First heat race winner Bob Timm will line up on the inside of the fifth row with second heat racer winner Les Duellman on the outside of the fourth row. Both heat race winners will be starting from the middle of the ten-row 20-car feature line up.

Racing action, including the postponed USRA Feature, resumes next Friday night at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY.
