Three In A Row For Fenske At Fox Ridge
(Arcadia, WI) – After a couple weeks comprised of what seemed like non-stop
clouds and rain, the skies opened greeting racers and fans alike with crystal
clear blue skies and sunshine as they filed into FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY in Arcadia
for another night of high-banked high-speed action on ‘The Big 3/8 Mile’.
All five divisions attacked the speedway with an enthusiasm and gusto that had
the crowd on their feet cheering the action while at the same time holding
their breath wondering weather the on-track battles would result in carnage
and crumpled cars.
FENSKE MAKES IT THREE IN A ROW
The USRA Modified features treated the crowd to action throughout the entire
field. The opening lap produced incredibly heavy traffic with fast cars
starting deep in the lineup challenging for any position possible in their
attempts to get to the front.
Starting from the inside of the fifth row, Winona’s Bob Timm attacked the
high line with verve and vigor unmatched by others in the field. Just a couple
laps into the green flag action, Timm was already working into the top three.
But it was an opening lap maneuver by Rick Hauser which set the tone of the
race and the laid the foundations for the race to the checkered flag. Entering
turn three, Hauser pounced on an opening in the congestion and squirted out to
the lead; a lead he would hold until the midway point of the feature.
After starting inside of the third row, Winona’s Karl Fenske also made moves
in the early race traffic to step up to second by the end of lap two. But by
this time, Hauser had already opened up a sizeable advantage. The next handful
of laps were Fenske cutting into Hauser’s lead. “I could see that Rick was
beginning to wash up a little in the turns – three and four”, commented
Fenske after the race, “So I needed to plan and time my attack.”
Mid way through the feature, Hauser opened up the bottom lane in turns three
and four and Fenske accepted the opportunity and got up along side Hauser’s
#19 on the front straight. Hauser tried protecting the inside lane and the two
touched as the rocketed towards turn one, “Rick and I have raced against
each other and been friends for about for ever – well, what, since high
school”, laughed Fenske, “When he tried to protect the bottom we touched
and I just backed out of it.”
Fenske regrouped and challenged for, and took the lead on the next lap and
held on for his third feature win in a row.
Bob Timm was likewise able to clear Hauser in the later stages of the feature
and close in on Fenske but never directly challenge for the lead. Timm settled
for second with Huaser third.
Heat race winners Brad Waits and Jay Ihrke finished fourth and seventh
respectively.
EARNEY WINS SECOND SUPER FEATURE
Cochrane’s Dennis Earney came from a tenth starting spot to grab his second
WISSOTA Super Stock feature win in as many events. Unlike his previous win,
which he picked up on the final lap of the event, Earney used the high line to
clear the entire field in the first two laps and walked away from the field
for a commanding win.
“We’d made a tire change for the feature”, commented Earney after the
win, “and the car worked perfectly. As a matter of fact I don’t think
I’ve EVER had a better car than tonight.”
With Earney out front, the crowds attention was focused on the rest of the
pack with four-wide action with the wide Super Stocks keeping the fans on the
edge of their seats.
Second heat race winner Dan Nissalke made his way from an eighth place
starting position to a firm second when the checkered flag waved, with first
heat race winner Rodney Dregney rounding out the top three.
KRAUSE RETURNS TO VICTORY LANE
After four years of dominance in the WISSOTA Street Stock Division, Buffalo
City, WI driver Travis Krause moved up the WISSOTA Midwest Modified division
for 2005. The first three weeks of on-track action were learning experiences,
the fourth week at FOX RIDGE he missed picking up his first feature win by
literally inches to Terry Timmerman.
Friday night, Krause returned to Victory Lane – this time with his Modified.
“Maybe I should thank (James) Pehler for saving me”, joked Krause as he
referred to an early race incident in which Krause got loose exiting turn four
while in front of the entire field. Pehler, with no where really to go, got
into Krause and literally straightened both cars back out without a caution.
Krause was able to pass early feature leader Bob Bautch and race onto the win.
Winonan Ben Anderson came from dead last in the starting lineup to finish a
close second with Bautch completing the top three.
First heat race winner Jason Cummins got caught up in a turn three four car
pile up with Dan Heasch, Pehler and point leader Ryan Olson and was unable to
complete the feature.
WEHLAGE AND DEAN BATTLE FOR WIN
The WISSOTA Street Stock feature was about as entertaining as possible.
Heavy traffic deep in the field made for excellent racing action while at the
same time Stockton driver Shaun Wehlage whittled away an enormous early race
lead opened up by Wayne Dean. Lap after lap Wehlage closed in on Dean’s #17
and across the closing laps challenged for the lead.
Wehlage was able to get up along side Dean on several occasions in the turns,
but Dean could open an advantage on the straights. Wehlage finally ran out of
laps and was forced to settle for a bitter-sweat second place finish.
Dean collected his third feature win with second heat race winner Andy
Bohstengel finishing a solid third.
KRONN GRABS HORNET WIN
Holmen’s Scott Kronn came from the inside of the fourth row in the
4-Cylinder Hornets feature to collect his first feature win of the 2005
season. Kronn outlasted fellow hornet drivers Rick Schermerhorn and Ryan
Happel in an incredibly intense three-car battle that lasted the entirety of
the feature event at the front of the field.
Often times battling three wide for the win, Kronn, Schermerhorn and Happel
made it look more like a battle for the Daytona 500 than a Hornet feature –
and the crowd loved it.
Mark Bornitz presented the ‘move of the feature’; by transferring to the
A-Main by winning the B-Feature Bornitz came all the way from the TENTH row to
finish an astounding fourth.
Racing resumes Friday May 27th with “Veterans Night” festivities; all
veterans are invited to start the extended Memorial Day weekend at FOX RIDGE
SPEEDWAY with absolutely free admittance. These Veterans will be our special
guests as we offer the free admittance as our simple way to say ‘Thank
You’.
