Fox Ridge Waves Checkers on 2004 Regular Season
(Arcadia, WI) – This past Friday evening wrapped up the 2004 regular season
at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY. With every driver at the track giving it there all, and
just a little extra it appeared, the crowd on hand had plenty with which to
keep themselves entertained.
One of the most intense features of the evening came from the WISSOTA Street
Stock division as Fall Creek, WI’s Wayne Dean and Stockton, MN’s Shaun
Wehlage battled side-by-side for almost the entirety of the 15 lap main event.
Despite starting from the outside of the third row, Wehlage wasted little time
getting to the front; by the time the pack had entered turn one on the opening
lap, Wehlage had cleared both cars starting in the second row and was already
on the rear bumper of Dean’s #17. After starting on the outside of the front
row, Dean used the first lap to clear pole-sitter John Laumb. What followed
was a thrilling feature that saw Wehlage try the low groove lap after lap,
corner after corner to setup an attempt to take the lead from Dean.
On more than a couple occasions the two leaders traded paint as Wehlage’s
momentum would pull his #100 up into the side of Dean’s car, but both
drivers were able to keep their cars headed in the right direction and the
battle continued all the way to the checkered flag.
As the checkered flag waved, Dean was out front to collect his first feature
win of the 2004 season at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY.
A feature that had the crowd on their feet cheering the battle for the lead
also had a four-car battle for third as Danny Hanson held off first heat race
winner Kylan Gamez, Ron Hanestad and second heat race winner Travis Krause.
LANGOWSKI FINALLY GRABS WIN
After a year that appeared to have more downs that ups, Winona’s Troy
Langowski finally got back up to the top of the heap and collected his first
feature win of the 2004 FOX RIDGE season. “This is a new car, we built the
car ourselves,” reflected Troy of the 2004 season, “we were off just a
pinch at the beginning of the year, but only here. I won three in a row up at
Deer Creak. But, then after we got it all figured our for (FOX RIDGE) we
started having mechanical troubles.”
While Langowski was winning elsewhere, his trips to FOX RIDGE seemed to be a
nightmare just waiting to happen. But all the troubles were made just a bit
easier to handle as he closed off the year picking up the feature win holding
off several strong challenges by Bloomer, WI’s Shawn Huse. “I knew that in
turns one and two if I stayed on the bottom that I’d be pretty hard to
pass,” explained Langowski of his charge to the win, “down in three and
four, as long as you can run high and there’s somewhat of a cushion, you can
stay in the gas all the way through the turns.”
After winning the first Super Stock heat race, Huse was never really able to
get up along side of Langowski and offer a solid challenge for the top spot,
and was forced to settle for a second place finish. Outside Pole sitter Steve
Hallquist and Cory Mahder finished third and fourth respectively, with second
heat race winner Gary Wiersgalla rounding out the top-five.
BEEN A LONG DOELLE COMING
After a lengthy up and down season that saw Arcadia’s John Doelle struggle
through a mountain of bad luck and mechanical failures to bring home a second
place finish in the track point standings, Friday was the light at the end of
the tunnel. After winning the second USRA Modified heat race, Doelle pulled
away from the field and was never once challenged for the top spot as he
motored his #94JR machine on to his first feature win of the 2004 season.
First heat race winner LeRoy Scharkey finished second just in front of
two-time, and 2004, track champion Karl Fenske.
HESCH WINS MIDWEST MODS
After finishing second in the 2004 point standings to veteran Harlan Morehart,
Arcadia, WI’s Dan Hesch closed out the regular 2004 season with feature win
when leader Dean Hoffman experienced troubles midway through Friday night’s
WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature. Hoffman appeared ready to claim his first
feature win of the 2004 season, but troubles in the turns two laps in a row
allowed Hesch all the opportunity he needed to clear Hoffman’s #8D and race
on for the win.
2004 point champion Morehart finished third followed by James Pehler and
Hoffman.
YAHNKE WINS HORNET FEATURE FOR GRANDPA
After using the brief intermission during Friday night’s program to wish his
Grandfather a happy birthday, Holmen, WI’s Justin Yahnke followed through
with a feature win as a gift. Holding off early feature challenges from fellow
Holmen driver Mark Bornitz, Yahnke breezed on to the victory in front of Allan
Van Vleet and first heat race winner Shane Anderson.
THUNDER AT THE RIDGE
With the 2004 season now completed, competitors and race fans alike will look
deep into October for their next racing fix on the high-banked big 3/8 mile
FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY. The fourth annual “THUNDER AT THE RIDGE” is scheduled
