Season Championships Set Foundation For Season’s Best Action

(Arcadia, WI) – Like towing a rabbit in front of the field at a dog-track to quicken the pace, the 2004 Gold-N-Plump Season Championships at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY upped the anti and added a whole new layer of intensity to the action Friday night.

Without a doubt, this will go down as a night of racing that had more positive post race discussions about the on-track action than any other this season. With Season Championship honors on the line, and point battles being decided for crowning of the 2004 track champions it was immediately obvious that every driver throughout each division was pushing just a little more than usual.

HUSE STEALS WIN
The WISSOTA Super Stock Feature event had the crowd on their feet and cheering for several different reasons. Starting from the outside of the front row local Super Stock veteran Jon Duffy attacked the high groove with fervor clearing pole sitter Dan Arneson to assume the lead. For the entire race it was Duffy’s #47 out front. Some laps it was a four to five car length advantage on Duffy’s part, other laps Duffy was dueling with fellow Super Stock drivers Gary Wiersgalla, first heat-race winner Troy Langowski, second heat-race winner Shawn Huse, and defending track champion Troy Brand.

As the laps ticked away and the checkered flag loomed nearer it became obvious that this five car battle was going to erupt into full fledged warfare. While Duffy remained at the top of the banking along with top-groove master Huse in tow, Wiersgalla claimed his domain down low while Langowski and Brand jumped back and forth choosing which ever lane gave them the most opportunity.

With the white flag flying the five cars at the front of the field continued swapping positions like barter trades at a flea market. With three laps to go, Huse had began diving low entering the turns trying to get along side Duffy to challenge for the lead. Duffy’s momentum in the high groove, however, allowed him to retain the lead up to the final lap. “My car was really strong tonight, and felt perfect up high as I like it,” explained Huse while reviewing the mad dash to the checkered flag, “But I knew that if I wanted to get around Jon I had to try clearing him exiting turn two.”

On the final lap Huse did just that, sliding up in front of Duffy, with just a little contact, as the two exited turn two. “I knew that I had to be able to get back up to the top in turns three and four,” continued Huse, “or I’d just get freight trained from the group passing me up high.”

Huse rounded turn four and headed home to the win with Langowski just sneaking past Duffy for second place at the Start / Finish line. Wiersgalla and Brand rounded out the top-five.

While Huse’s win crowned him as Gold-N-Plump Season Champion, Brand’s fifth place finish was strong enough to hand him his second straight track championship with a 21 point margin over Huse.

Hund wins Street Stock Shocker
With three time defending track champion Travis Krause starting from the inside of the second row, it appeared that his #01 was a sure bet for a trip to victory lane. Tom Hund, and Krause’s tires, had other plans.

By turn three of the first lap, Krause was out front and it appeared ready to begin a yawning run to yet another win. Not so. Starting from the outside of the third row, Fountain City, WI’s Tom Hund slowly reeled in the leader and eventually challenged for the lead.

Just as Hund worked by for the lead, Krause’s night took the first negative turn when his right rear tire blew on the back straight. Krause threw the car into a clock-wise spin in turns three and four to draw the caution and headed to the pits for a new tire. After rejoining the pack at the rear of the field, Krause began working through the field with much gusto. Perhaps too much; exiting turn four Krause slammed into the driver’s side of Fred Prudoehl’s #2 and cut down his right front tire. Krause limped to the pits under green, not to be seen again, and suffered a sour 15th place finish.

Hund led the rest of the way to collect the win and the Gold-N Plump Season Championship. Incredibly, Krause’s fifteenth place finish was just enough as Krause wrapped up his fourth straight Track Championship by a mere five-point difference over Hund!

Fenske, and hard luck, Dethrones Duellman and Timm
After a season that has witnessed the #0 of Les Duellman lay down a perfect undefeated record in regular USRA weekly racing at FOX RIDGE, Friday night’s feature brought with it a different result. After Assuming the point lead after a mid-season feature win, Bob Timm’s night couldn’t have gone worse. After a mid-season slump that saw Karl Fenske drop out of the point lead and struggle for top-five feature finishes, Friday night provided all the right alignments for a Cinderella win.

After trouble in hot laps, his heat race and an impromptu hot lap session during intermission, Bob Timm’s #49 failed to make it even to the halfway point of the USRA Modified feature. Final standings showed Timm finishing dead last of those cars taking the green flag! Timm’s Championship hopes had passed by as quietly as his car entering the infield.

With 11 laps to go, Duellman, who had already worked up to third, kissed the back straight wall just enough to force him out of the throttle momentarily. Pole sitter LeRoy Scharkey dove to the inside but, while doing so, clipped Duellman’s left front tire, turning Duellman’s #0 into a spin at the entry of turn three.

Over the final 11 lap run to the checkered flag, Duellman was able to battle back through the field to a fifth place finish, but out front, it was Fenske all the way. Ron Schreiner, Brad Waits and Scharkey finished second, third and fourth, respectively; but Fenske collected the checkered flag, the Gold-N-Plump Season Championship and enough points to wrap up his second straight Track Championship as well.

Morehart takes it all
“You know, I’ve been racing a long time,” Said Eyota, MN’s Harlan Morehart after winning Friday night’s Gold-N-Plump Season Championship feature event in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified Division, and thereby collecting the track championship, “Sounds funny but I can’t remember every single year I’ve raced.” After racing through six decades, that’s correct SIX DECADES behind the wheel, race fans are more that ready to forgive Morehart a slight slip in his memory concerning his stats. “But, you know what?” asked Morehart after the win, “I actually think this is my first ever track championship.”

With a gleam in his eye he closed his thought with a catch phrase that’s become common in post race discussions with the crowd favorite, “Ain’t that somethin’?”

Morehart charged from the outside of the front row at the drop of the green flag and never once relinquished the lead. Owatonna’s Ron Houdek, visiting ‘The Ridge’ for the first time this season, ran a strong second but never once offered Morehart a solid challenge for the lead settling for a second place finish. Winona’s Bob Bautch, laying the groundwork for a possible return to full-time driving, finished a strong third with Dan Hesch and Dean Hoffman rounding out the top-five.

Bornitz makes it two in a row
Mark Bornitz picked up another 4-cylinder Hornet feature win, stretching the lead over first heat-race winner Ryan Ruhbusch and Charlie Schwabenbauer through the feature race.

Racing resumes next Friday night with a full card of racing and Track Championship awarding to point champions in the USRA, Midwest Modified, Super Stock, and Street Stock divisions. Season championships will be awarded for the Hornets feature winner as well.
