Fox Ridge Points Battles Heating Up As Season Winds Down
(Arcadia, WI) – The season is winding down, and the points battles are
heating up. With just two more regular Friday night shows scheduled for the
2004 season at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY, the largest spread between a current point
leader and the runner-up is 31 points – this in the WISSOTA Super Stock
Division.
BRAND ADDS TO POINT LEAD
Winonan Troy Brand added to his point lead over Bloomer, Wisconsin’s Shawn
Huse by picking up his seventh feature win of the season by holding off late
race challenges by first heat race winner Troy Langowski and Huse. “I almost
got caught off guard,” admitted Brand after picking up the win, “I had
built up a pretty good lead there and was actually backing off just a bit when
all of a sudden I heard Langowski right up behind me and I thought uh-oh, time
to get back on it.”
Despite man-handling his 2800 pound racer around the fast high-banked FOX
RIDGE SPEEDWAY, Brand admitted to focusing his attention elsewhere right in
the middle of the race! “Every lap I’d take a look over to the scoring
tower,” admitted the smiling Brand, referring to how he watched Huse worked
through the field via the huge Ashley Furniture Home Store scoring pylon in
the infield, “every so often I’d see the number 1 take another step up the
standings towards the top of the score board.” Sure enough, by the time the
checkered flag waved all three cars, Brand’s #177, Langowski’s #88 and
Huse’s #1 were embroiled in a three-way battle for the victory.
Brand held out for the win, followed by Langowski and Huse. While most of the
front runners ran the high groove around the 3/8 mile speedway, Fountain
City’s Gary Wiersgalla used the lower groove almost exclusively en route to
a solid fourth place finish just in front of visiting Super Stock ace Cory
Mahder.
HESCH CLOSES IN ON POINT LEADER
After settling on an agonizing second place finish behind point leader Harlan
Morehart in the second WISSOTA Midwest Modified heat race, Arcadia’s Dan
Hesch turned the tables and collected the checkered flag at the end of the
evening’s feature race. “It was fun to finally beat Harlan,” said Hesch
of his friend and fellow competitor, “The car was actually getting a little
looser as the feature went of, but it was running really good down low in
(turns) one and two. Then I’d go up a little higher in (turns) three and
four.”
At one point Morehart actually passed Hesch for the lead, but a caution
negated that pass forcing the 65 year-old Eyota racer to drop back behind
Hesch for the restart. Morehart mounted another strong charge over the closing
laps and, once again, got right up along side Hesch’s #E85 to challenge for
the lead, only to suffer slight miscues at both ends of the track over the
final lap, allowing Hesch to motor on to Victory.
The feature win will help Hesch close the gap between himself and Morehart,
the current point leader, heading into the final few weeks of the 2004 season.
Winonan Bob Bautch and mid-season feature winner James Pehler finished third
and fourth respectively with first heat race winner Brad Hudson rounding out
the top-five.
KRAUSE STRETCHES LEAD AND POINT SPREAD
All three WISSOTA Street Stock heat-race winners factored into the final
outcome at the top of the finishing order at the end of the evening’s
feature race Friday night. Current point leader, and three time defending
track champion, road a first heat win to the front of the field at feature
time and held off constant challenges from second heat-race winner Tom Hund
and third heat-race winner Shaun Wehlage, to gather his sixth feature win of
the season and spread his points lead on the rest of the pack.
With Krause keeping him momentum up via the top groove, Hund was forced to
look for any advantage down low. Practically racing on the apron, Hund dogged
Krause’s #01 the entire feature, with Wehlage joining in to make it a
three-car battle up front. The final turn of the final lap had all three cars
in a tight pack headed for the checkered flag. Hund settled for second, with
Wehlage along side in third, right behind Krause.
Winona Brad Dennis enjoyed one of his strongest nights of the season with a
solid fourth place finish. But, a slightly over shadowed run came from
visiting Street Stocker Wayne Dean. Making the hall from Fall Creek, Dean’s
night appeared to come to an abrupt end just two laps into the feature when
his car back-fired loudly on the front stretch and dropped off the pace
sputtering and belching flames out the exhaust. A simultaneous caution,
brought about by a spin elsewhere on the track allowed Dean to head for the
pits and survey the situation. Just as the field was about to return to green
flag racing, Dean’s #17 reappeared on the track at the rear of the 21-car
field, still on the lead lap.
What followed was an impressive drive through the field as Dean worked his way
all the way through the pack to a satisfying fifth place finish as the
checkered flags waved!
SCHARKEY IMPRESSIVE, BUT DUELLMAN WINS AGAIN
“Someone’s going to have everything exactly perfect if they’re ever
going to beat Duellman.” Was all veteran driver LeRoy Scharkey could say at
the end of the USRA Modified feature. After missing a couple weeks with motor
troubles, LeRoy showed up back at the track behind the wheel of a friend’s
Pierce Chassis #1 Modified.
With the track turning dry slick at the end of feature, Scharkey put his years
of experience to work and rocketed through the field to a strong third place
finish. “Yeah, I like it when the track gets like that,” offered Scharkey
on his run through the field, “It’s kind of like a great equalizer. It’s
not so much motor as it is setup and driver.”
Scharkey missed a second place finish by mere inches, crossing the Start /
Finish line right along side the #7X of visiting Modified driver Ron Jones.
Rick Hauser and Karl Fenske rounded out the top-five, with Les Duellman
keeping his perfect record, during regular weekly USRA events, in tact with
his ninth feature win.
BORNITZ AND JOHNSON COLLECT REMAINING CHECKERS
Mark Bornitz worked his way back and forth through the traffic before besting
the competition in the 26 car 4-cylinder Hornet feature event. After winning
the second heat-race, Bornitz stretched the lead over first heat-race winner
Justin Yahnke for the feature win.
Jordan Johnson turned in a dominant performance leading all the way to the win
during the Pure Stock feature event. Mike Knudtson finished second just in
front of Michael Harsh.
Racing resumes next Friday night with the Gold N Plump season championships
for USRA Modifieds, WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, WISSOTA Super Stocks and
WISSOTA Street Stocks. Also, Kids night festivities will include a Boys and
Girls Mountain bike give away and an appearance by the DARE car and child
safety information at the track.
