Double Features Kick Off August At Fox Ridge Speedway
(Arcadia, WI) - - After Mother Nature interrupted last week's racing program
at Fox Ridge Speedway, racing fans were treated to an evening of extra racing
this past Friday night August 6th with double features for each division.
While Les Duellman and Tom Hund wrapped up their evenings by winning both
features and their heat race in the USRA Modified and WISSOTA Street Stock
divisions respectively, the other divisions enjoyed different winners through
both feature events.
Wiersgalla goes "Worst to First"
Gary Wiersgalla turned in his version of the proverbial "Worst to
First" scenario in the WISSOTA Super Stock Division. After running strong
through the first few laps of the initial WISSOTA Super Stock feature, it
quickly became apparent that Wiersgalla was suffering with some major
suspension problems; with the corner of his car dragging on the ground, the
left front tire literally jammed up inside the front end of the vehicle, and
his right rear tire practically lifted off the ground, his familiar #52 began
dropping back through the field. But, to the amazement of most of the crowd,
Wiersgalla continued wrestling his car around the speedway actually remaining
in the top-10!
Just a few laps shy of the checkered flag, Wiersgalla finally lost his battle
with the crippled car to a spin in turns one and two. "I was sitting
there motioning for the tow truck to come give me a push so I could get back
in the race and finish the feature," recalled Wiersgalla at the end of
the evening, "the driver of the truck took one look at my right front and
poked his head in and shouted to me, 'Dude, you're not going anywhere'. I
thought I had just packed the right rear tire full of mud or something, but,
man I broke the left front spindle, damaged the radiator and some other
things."
Wiersgalla's crew swarmed over the car through the rest of the evening and
with all problems fixed he was able to hold of an entire race full of
challenges for the lead en route to winning the second Super Stock feature of
the evening. With a rear bumper full of first heat-race winner Shawn Huse,
second heat-race and first feature winner Troy Brand Wiersgalla completed the
biggest 180 degree turn around of the evening by collecting the second feature
win.
Midwest Modified wins split amongst the young and the old
"I'm not sure if I even want Foss driving my car anymore" joked Dan
Hesch at the conclusion of Friday's racing program, referring to Keith Foss
who has been driving Hesch's WISSOTA Midwest Modified over the past several
weekends at Fox Ridge Speedway.
After finishing second to Harlan Morehart in the makeup feature, Hesch's
heat-race win was soured a bit when he ended up finishing second in the
evening's second feature to Keith Foss who was piloting the modified owned by
Hesch. This is the second feature win for Foss in just three weeks behind the
wheel of Hesch's #16 Modified.
After winning the make up feature, 65-year-old Morehart enjoyed a second trip
to Victory Lane at the conclusion of the evening's second heat-race. "The
car was set up perfect for the track in the first feature and the heat
race," commented Morehart after settling on a fourth place finish in the
second feature race, "but the track changed quite a bit by the time we
got to our second feature, and to tell the truth, I really didn't make the
changes to the car I needed for the way the track had changed. But, hey,"
continued a chuckling and self-mocking Morehart, "I'm 65 years-old! I was
just to tired there at the end of the evening to go race for another
win!"
Clean Sweep for Hund
The WISSOTA Street Stock portion of the evening's program was dominated by Tom
Hund who won the make-up feature, the second Street Stock heat-race and the
night's second feature as well. "That second feature was some of the
best, most intense and exciting racing I have EVER experienced," offered
a visually excited Hund after winning his second feature of the night, "I
mean it was Travis (Krause) down low, me up high, (Danny) Hanson and (Shaun)
Wehlage thrown in there as well. Man it was some great racing there."
After winning the evening's first heat-race, Hanson actually took the lead
from Hund momentarily during the second feature, only to be dropped back
behind Hund's #10 after a caution slowed the race before he could lead the lap
at the Start / Finish line. Hund used the restart to open up a solid lead and
lead the rest of the way to his third checkered flag of the evening.
Duellman's perfect season in tact
While Les Duellman did not win the feature event on the night of the USMTS
traveling series special a couple weeks ago at Fox Ridge Speedway, he has won
every single regular weekly USRA race he's entered. This past Friday night was
no different as Duellman won the makeup feature, the evening's second heat
race and the second feature event.
First heat-race winner John Doelle ran a strong feature at the end of the
evening but settled for a fifth place finish behind Rick Hauser, Bob Timm and
Ron Britain.
Yahnke doodle Dandy
Holmen, WI's Justin Yahnke put forth a perfect effort winning both the
opening 4-Cylinder Hornet heat race and the evening's final feature. Gary
Towner crossed the line second followed by second heat-race winner Alan Van
Vleet.
