Fox Ridge Roars with ‘Summer Thunder’

(Arcadia, WI) – For the first time this year, race fans were actually happy
to experience ‘Thunder’ on race night. After the first half of the 2004
season was plagued with numerous rain outs, Fans were looking forward to the
2004 ‘Fox Ridge Summer Thunder’ $2000 to win USMTS special this past
Friday night.
After 46 scheduled events already this year, comprised of travels to more than
ten different states, the United States Modified Touring Series rumbled into
Arcadia Wisconsin to pit big-named touring series drivers such as Kelly
Shryock, Jason Hughes and Tommy Myer against local favorites like Les Duellman,
Bob Timm, Rick Hauser, Karl Fenske and others.
The four heat races were evenly split with the first and third being won by
visiting USMTS drivers Jason Hughes and Kelly Shryock and the second and
fourth won by locals Karl Fenske and Les Duellman. Both last-chance B-Mains
were won by local modified stars John Doelle and Bob Timm.
The 35 lap 24 car feature had Shryock starting on the pole with Hughes on the
outside of the front row. Locals Rick Huaser and Fenske started side-by-side
in the third row with Duellman drawing the eighth starting spot on the outside
of row four.
From the drop of the green flag it was all Jason Hughes. Challenged very
briefly over the course of the first few laps by Shryock, Hughes was the
dominant entry and never once relinquished the lead as he led all 35 laps en
route to the win. “This car was perfect,” commented the Colcord, Oklahoma
racer, after climbing from his car in Victory Lane, “Being out front like
that I was able to put the car right where I wanted it and never really had to
worry about the cars behind me.”
While Hughes made the race to the checkered flags a bit of a ‘yawner’, the
competition from third through twenty-fourth was nothing short of awesome.
Duellman, for example, put in a show of marked determination as he attempted
to keep his perfect record at Fox Ridge in tact. Racing as high as third and
as low and twelfth, the Winonan, MN’s #0 battled back and fourth through the
entirety of the feature before accepting the checkered flags with a
bitter-sweet fourth place finish.
The second half of the field resembled a rush hour traffic jam on the worst
L.A. freeway. Two and three wide racing for position was the norm through out
the event with more than a little paint and sheet metal being traded between
competitors.
Pole-sitter Shryock held off several challenges for second by Cedar Falls, IA
driver Corey Dripps with Shryock finishing second and Dripps third. Blooming
Prairie’s Mark Noble finished just behind Duellman to complete the top-five.
Huse’s third win in four weeks
After winning the first WISSOTA Super Stock heat, Bloomer, Wisconsin’s Shawn
Huse ran his customary high-groove all the way to victory lane for his third
feature win in four weeks. “The track was really slick,” replied Huse
after the win, “but that actually made it really fun tonight. It really made
me work the car, or the pedels, and forced me to really focus on driving
smooth. This track is fun to race on, but sometimes it’s just put the pedal
down and hold on for the ride, but tonight the track really made car control
important.”
Huse fended off many challenges for the lead by current point leader Troy
Brand before grabbing the checkered flags. Brand settled for second, followed
across the line by Cochrane’s Dennis Earney. Kellogg, MN’s Kevin Hager
enjoyed on of his strongest runs of the evening keeping his #94 in the
top-five throughout the entire feature eventually finishing fourth in front of
Mondovi, WI driver Rodney Dregney.
Second heat race winner Troy Langowski looked prepared to battle near the
front of the field before contact with Gary Wiersgalla’s #52 forced
Langowski into the pits, and off the lead lap, with a flat tire.
Krause’s dominance continues
Three-time track Champion Travis Krause picked up another clean sweep winning
both the first heat race and the evening’s Street Stock feature. After being
challenged solidly for the lead early by Arcadia’s Kylan Gamez, Krause was
in the clear after an early race spin, at the front of the field, by Gamez
ended the evening for Gamez’s #97 along with Tom Hund and second heat race
winner David Nastvold. All three cars suffered heavy damage in the turn three
melee, but the drivers were able to hope from their rides with no injuries.
After the race returned to green, Krause cruised to the win followed by Shaun
Wehlage, Danny Hanson, Chuck Nerland and Andy Bohnstengel. “The only place I
could run and get the grip I wanted was down low,” explained Krause after
the win, “I usually like running a lot higher, but tonight, my handling and
the bite was all down at the bottom right around the apron.”
Keith Foss wins – in a Modified?
Winonan Keith Foss is usually recognized behind the wheel of a dirt Late
Model. Friday night he climbed behind the wheel of the #16 WISSOTA Midwest
Modified and ended the evening with a strong feature win. Passing second heat
race winner Dan Hesch mid way through the feature, Foss motored on to the
first Midwest Modified win of his career.
Ryan Olson and point leader Harlan Morehart finished third and fourth while
first heat race winner Dean Hoffman rounded out the top-five.
Towner inherits Hornet win - Knopps wins Pure Stock event
After second heat race winner Steve Dwyer was disqualified for turning down a
car claim will sitting in Victory Lane after ‘winning’ the Hornet feature,
Galesville, WI’s Gary Towner was ushered into Victory Lane for his first
4-cylinder Hornet feature win. First heat race winner Mike Skroch finished
second followed by Brandon Gleiter Shane Anderson and Kevin Baertch.
After a week away from the speedway, Mike Knopps returned to pickup his fourth
straight feature win. Michael Harsh, Shawn Krousey, Bill Benish, and Dustin
Thorson completed the top-five.
Racing resumes next Friday night at Fox Ridge Speedway with hot laps at 7:00
p.m. and the first green flag at 7:30. See you at The Ridge!
