Two In A Row For Timm At Fox Ridge
August 1, 2003
For the second week in a row, Bob Timm swept through the WISSOTA Modified
field like a man on a mission. This time however, John Doelle almost
spoiled Timm's dominance.
In fact, it was Doelle that was dominating the Modified feature for the first
14 laps until a caution bunched the field together.
Starting on the outside of the first row along side Rick Hauser, Doelle got
off to a good start with Hauser and Lonnie Earney in close pursuit.
Doelle found the top groove to his liking while Hauser kept to the
bottom. Eventually, Doelle was able to pull away as Hauser and Earney
continued their battle for second. As the race progressed, Doelle
completely checked out on the rest of the field. Eventually, Timm was
able to work through slower traffic and became a part of the battle for
second. Meanwhile, Hauser's car broke, forcing him to leave the race
leaving Earney and Timm to fight for what appeared to be the runner-up spot.
Unfortunately for Doelle, who had built about a straight-away lead, Jeremy
Jonsgaard ran into Jonah Daffinson causing Daffinson to spin, bringing out the
yellow. On the restart, Doelle got a good jump, but he had a mirror full
of Bob Timm. Timm made up the gap in a hurry and was able to pass Doelle.
With Timm running the bottom and Doelle on the top side, neither could gain a
clear advantage until Timm pulled ahead with two laps to go. Doelle
fought back and was able to pass Timm as the two went past the flagstand to
take the white flag. They stayed relatively even down the back stretch
and entering turn three. Timm hugged the bottom while Doelle slid just
enough in turn four to allow Timm to beat him to the checkered. Earney
was able to hold off Les Duellman and Steve Speltz to claim third place.
In the first Modified heat Timm started from the pole, but it was an
impressive move by young Ben Anderson that really stood out. Vaulting
from his number four starting spot, pulling a daring three wide move going
into urn one, Anderson came out of turn two in the lead. Unfortunately
for Anderson, the yellow came out when Les Duellman had a spin. On the
complete restart, Anderson pulled the same move with the same result, this
time though Ron Schreiner and Duellman tangled, bringing about another
caution. On the restart, Anderson got close to Timm but was not able to
pass him. As the field spread out, Timm was able to walk away and claim
the win. Duellman finished second with Schreiner coming in third.
The Super Stock feature went much the same way as the Modified feature.
Troy Langowski started from the pole and quickly moved out to a comfortable
lead on the rest of the field. He maintained that lead over Adam
Stockhausen and Shawn Huse while Troy Brand, Dan Arneson, Gary Wiersgalla,
Kelly Anderson, and Dan Nissalke battled for fourth on back.
On lap nine, Nissalke's car slowed coming out of turn two, causing Nick
Herrick to check up. Kevin Hager was unable to avoid the two sending
both Hager and Herrick into a spin. Fortunately for them, very little
contact was actually made, but unfortunately for Langowski, the caution fell.
On the restart, Langowski got out to a fair lead, but he was quickly tracked
down by Huse. Huse was able to get by Langowski with five laps to go and
began to pull away when Langowski's car slowed in the back stretch.
Langowski's hopes were gone and Huse's celebration could begin. Huse was
followed across the finish line by the current track points leader Brand,
Kelly Anderson, Rod Dregney, and Stockhausen.
The current point race remains very close, with Brand leading Anderson by a
mere 12 points with Huse only 28 points out.
In the first Super Stock heat, Anderson started from the outside pole, getting
a jump on Wiersgalla. The two maintained their positions until a spin on
lap three caused a caution. On the restart, Langowski moved into second
where he closely pursued Anderson. Catching and passing are two
different things, though, and Anderson was able to hold Langowski off for the
win. Wiersgalla, Dregney, and Nissalke finished third through fifth.
The second Super Stock heat had a fairly violent crash that was triggered when
Dan Arneson caught the back bumper of Jason Johnson, sending Johnson into a
spin. As Johnson came down the track, he collided with Travis Wagner
leaving the two disabled cars in the middle of the track. After some
medical attention Wagner was able to leave his car under his own power, while
Johnson was not able to finish the program. Brand was able to beat Huse
with Stockhausen, Herrick, and Arneson forming the top five.
Shawn Wehlage was able to gain considerable ground on points leader Travis
Krause in the Street Stock division with a feature win. Last week,
Wehlage ran into bad luck as he trashed his transmission during his heat
race. This week, however, it was Krause's turn for misfortune.
Early in the third Street Stock heat, Wehlage got out to an early advantage
with Krause closely behind. The two raced side by side for several laps
but as they were doing so, a tell tale smoke trail developed behind Krause's
car. They proceeded to battle right up to the last corner on the last
lap, when Krause's engine gave out. Wehlage claimed the win and Krause
was able to coast to the line to finish second, barely edging out Winona's
Fred Prudoehl. Matt Wolfe and Kylan Gamez finished fourth and fifth,
respectively.
In Street Stock heat one, Mike Prochnow was able to get out early on the field
with Alma's Danny Hansen and Galesville's Dave Nastvold in hot pursuit.
Hansen was able to dispose of Nastvold on lap four, putting pressure on
Prochnow. On lap five, Prochnow bobbled coming out of turn two, and
Hansen took advantage, moving into the lead for good. Prochnow had a
tire go down, eliminating him from the race. Nastvold finished second
and Dennis Davis came in third.
Street Stock heat number two had a decidedly closer outcome, as Lake City,
MN's Jeremy Sommer edged out Fountain City's Tom Hund by a half car
length at the finish.
In the Street Stock feature, Wehlage was able to take advantage of his outside
pole position to jump to an early lead over Brad Dennis, Davis, and Nastvold.
Things got hairy early and often, with the cars running four wide on several
occasions. On lap six, Dennis Davis got into Prochnow causing Prochnow
to slow. Independence's Matt Wolfe spun while trying to avoid Prochnow,
bringing out the yellow. A hard charger of note during this race was
Arcadia's Kylan Gamez. In just 6 laps, the Arcadian had moved from 16th
spot to sixth.
Wehlage and Jeremy Somer kept a close and constant battle until the end, with
Wehlage coming out on top and Somer in the runner-up spot. Nastvold,
Hansen, and Gamez were in the third through fifth spots.
In the Midwest Modifieds feature, Bangor's Dan Koziel took the green from th
pole and proceeded to open a huge lead on the rest of the field while Harlan
Morehart, points leader Dan Fagerlind, and Scott Anderson battled for
second. The race looked to be in the bag for Koziol until lap 11 when
things began to unravel. Winona's Tom Brink, who at the time, was at the
back of the pack, spun coming out of turn 4. He was able to refire the
car, avoiding a caution. However, by turn one, Koziol had caught the
floundering Brink and was about to pass him on the outside when Brink drifted
high and right into the side of Koziol. The contact cut down Koziol's
left rear tire, sending him to the pits and out of the race.
Anderson took over from there and except for a challanger from Fagerlind on
the last lap, was able to cruise to the win. Fagerlind was
followed across the line by Harlan Morehart, Jeff Ringenberg, and Matt Durnen.
The feature was a nice reward for Anderson, who makes the long pull all of the
way from Phillips, WI every week.
The Midwest Modified Heat number two proved to be one of the closest races of
the night. Morehart got the jump on Arcadia's Dan Hesch to lead in the
early stage of the race. Ringenberg, who had started in the fifth spot
moved up to the second spot by the end of lap one. Ringenberg harassed
Morehart throughout the race until on the last lap coming out of turn four,
Ringenberg was able to get by Morehart to take the checkered.
Dan Koziol won the first Midwest Mod heat, beating Anderson, Fagerlind, and
Bud Pehler.
The Mini Sprints made a bit of a surprise appearance at Fox Ridge on Friday
night. A group of 14 of the mostly Suzuki powered cars put on a good
show in their first appearance at the track.
Heat winners in the Mini Sprints were Randy Sippel from Elkhart WI and Pat
Halsy from Rochester MN.
In the feature, Stoughton WI's Buddy Luebke took early command of the event
while Halsy and Kevin Nickel of Scandia, MN had a spirited battle for
second. The race continued without incident until Nickel, who was
attempting to pass lapped traffic going hard into turn three, ran up on the
inside of slower car, sending Nickel into a roll. Nickel was alright but
his car definitely need work. Luebke was able to hold the lead at the
restart and took the feature going away. He was followed across the line
by Halsy, Barth Crane of Rochester, Ken Bueding of New Hampton, Ia, and Scott
Sippel.
It was nice to see the Mini drivers stick around after the feature, graciously
giving the kids a chance to check out their rides. Luebke was
particularly good with the kids, given each a chance to have their photo take
behind the wheel of his car.
Next week at Fox Ridge Speedway will be Golden Plump/Trempealeau County Crime
Stoppers Kids night at the Ridge. Kids will be treated to many
entertaining items and will receive special discounts at the gate.
The folks at Fox Ridge Speedway also wish to announce a change in their
starting times effective August 8th. Car cut off will be at 6:45 with
hot laps at 7:00 and racing at 7:30
