Timm Wins At Fox Ridge
ARCADIA, WI(July 25, 2003) Bob Timm continued his recent impressive run in
the WISSOTA Modified Class at Fox Ridge Speedway with a win in Friday
Night’s Feature.
After a strong 3rd place showing the previous week during Fox Ridge’s USMTS
feature, Timm was able to follow up with dramatic come-from-behind wins in
both his Heat and the Feature. In the 20 lap feature, Timm drew a
tough 10th starting spot in a small but very talented 13 car starting field.
Steve Speltz and Les Duellman started on the front row with Speltz getting the
jump on Duellman at the drop of the green, only to have the race stopped on a
spin on the front stretch, causing a complete restart. On the restart,
it was Duellman’s turn to get the jump but Speltz was able to regain the
lead by the end of the first lap. The field spread out with Speltz and
Duellman in front but Karl Fenske and Timm were quickly reeling in the
leaders. By lap 9, Fenske was on Speltz’s rear bumper while Timm moved
into 3rd place, passing Dennis Earney. By lap 15, Timm was challenging
Fenske for 2nd as a caution came out when Kerry Ledebuhr’s ride broke
down in turn 3.
On the restart, Timm was able to get around both Speltz and Fenske and once
clear of them, he was able to check out on the field and took the checkered
with Speltz, Fenske, Dan Hesch and Eric Pember rounding out the top 5.
The first WISSOTA Modified heat was a very competitive one. Pember and
Winona’s Ben Anderson started off on the front row and fought back and forth
for the better part of 6 laps. By lap 6 Timm had worked his way into 2nd
behind Pember while Duellman and Fenske joined the pair to make it a foursome
battling for the lead. Timm took the lead with 2 laps to go while
Duellman slid into 2nd as the field took the white flag. Timm took the
checkered with Duellman 2nd, Pember in 3rd, Fenske in 4th and Dan Hesch in
5th.
The second Heat started with John Doelle, currently 2nd in Modified points at
Fox Ridge, on the pole, joined by Jason Marten of Mondovi on the outside of
row 1. Doelle was able to get a good start at the green flag and was
quickly able to run away from the rest of the pack. Speltz was
Doelle’s nearest competitor but there appeared to be no way Speltz would be
able to catch Doelle. On lap 6, Marten and Jonah Daffinson tangled
between turns 3 and 4, sending both into spins but they were able to keep
their cars under power and the race went green to checker with Doelle winning
by about ¾ of the front straight away. Winona’s Rick Hauser finished
second followed by Speltz, Ledebuhr and Marten.
The WISSOTA Street Stock points race has been shaping up to be a real battle
between Stockton, MN’s Shawn Wehlage and Travis Krause of Buffalo
City. After a slow start this season, Wehlage has been making a
concerted effort to depose Krause, the 2 time defending Track Champion.
However, on the first lap of the third heat, Wehlage’s transmission went up
in a cloud of smoke, ending the hard charger’s night before it ever got
started. Tom Hund took an early lead in the heat, but Danny Hanson was
able to stay right on Hund’s rear bumper. They continued to battle for
the lead until Menominee’s Mike Prochnow was able to get under both Hund and
Hanson and into the lead. Prochnow ended up taking the checkered while
Hund and Hanson battled door to door til the very end, with Hanson gaining 2nd
and Hund garnering 3rd.
In the first heat, Fred Prudoehl of Winona, MN jumped out to an early
lead, but Krause, who started from the 6 spot had already moved into second by
the end of the first lap on a daring 4 wide move in turn 4. On the back
stretch in lap 2, Krause was able to pass Prudeohl and never looked
back. Prudoehl was able to keep Krause in sight, but could not make up
any ground on him. The best battle of the race was for 3rd with John
Laumb, Brad Dennis, and Rick Loppnow going door-to-door. Dennis ended up
with the third spot, behind Krause and Prudoehl.
The 2nd heat saw Winona’s Andy Bohnstengel take the early lead followed by
Arcadia’s Kylan Gamez. Bohnstengel was able to maintain his lead, but
Gamez kept chipping away at it. Finally with 1 lap to go, Gamez pulled
along side Bohnstengel and was able to complete the pass as the two came into
the front stretch, with Gamez taking the checkered and Lake City’s
Jeremy Sommer coming in third.
The 21 car Street Stock feature started out with a bang as a turn 4 crash on
the 1st lap eliminated 3 competitors. You almost knew something was
going to happen as the entire pack went into the turn 4, 4 wide.
Something had to give and it did. On the restart, Fred Prudoehl took the
lead with Danny Hanson in hot pursuit. Hanson was able to grab the lead
on lap 3 and was able to stay there until lap 7 when Mike Prochnow got past
him. A spin by Tom Brust brought out the caution and on the restart, Krause
took the lead and was not to be challenged the rest of the race.
Prochnow finished second followed by Hanson, Sommer, Dennis and Gamez.
The two Midwest Modified Heats were uneventful with Eyota, MN’s Jeff
Ringenberg running away from the field in the first heat. Dan Fagerlind
and Scotty Anderson finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. The 2nd heat was
more closely contended, though Bangor’s Dan Koziol led from start to
finish. Harlan Morehart came in second followed by Tom Brink and Matt
Durnen, both of Winona. Friday night was Durnen’s first attempt in the
Midwest Mods, doing double duty in the Superstocks as well.
In the Midwest Mod feature, Scotty Anderson took command early and led until
lap 8 when when a spin involving Bud Pehler and Dan Fagerlind brought out the
caution. On the restart, Dan Hesch and Ringenberg got by Anderson.
It remained that order until, with 2 to go, Fagerlind pulled along side Hesch.
Fagerlind however, was unable to get past Hesch, with the Arcadia driver going
on to take the win and Fagerlind beating out Anderson by less than 2 feet for
2nd. Matt Durnen finished a respectable 4th and Harlan Morehart came in
5th.
In the Super Stock division, Kenyon MN’s Nick Herrick continued his charge
up the point standings with his feature win. A highly competitive field
of 17 supers started the event which went green to checkered.
Herrick took advantage of his outside front row starting position to get in
front of pole sitter Matt Durnen and in front is where Herrick stayed for the
entire event. Troy Langowski was able to challenge Herrick for the lead
several times, but was never able to complete the pass, eventually ending in
second. Another interesting battle took place behind the leaders for
3rd, with Troy Brand, Shawn Huse, Dennis Earney, and Kelly Anderson finishing
3rd through 6th. Anderson and Huse both finished strong considering that
they were held up toward the back of the field in heavy traffic for most of
the race.
The race results were very important when looking at the current points
standings with Langowski, Herrick, Huse, and Anderson all trailing
points leader Brand by less than 50 points and especially with Anderson
entering the night only 4 back, in Second. It should be a very
interesting Month of August with only 4 weeks remaining before the August 29th
Track Championship.
The Super Stock heats both went green to checker, with Gary Wiersgalla and
Adam Stockhausen taking their respective heats.
Due to a big Special up north, the Late Models did not run on Friday
Night. Fox Ridge also announced on Friday that the Tuesday, August 19th
WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series event has been cancelled.
Fox Ridge Speedway returns to action next Friday night, August 1st, with La
Crosse Beverage/Coors Light Night at the races. WISSOTA Modifies,
Midwest Mods, Super Stocks, and Street Stocks will be on hand for that event.
