Timm Captures Wissota Mod Special
by Scott Malotke
July 5, 2003
Bob Timm's luck was bound to change. The veteran mod driver had been bitten by mechanical gremlins several times in the last few weeks. Friday night, it finally did as Timm captured the $2,000 to win Wissota modified special at Fox Ridge Speedway.
Timm sat on the pole for the 30 lap main event and held off several challengers to notch the win. Timm shared the front row with 2002 Wissota Rookie of the Year Joey Jenson. Timm beat Jenson into turn one on the start and was never headed.
While Timm pulled out to seven car length lead. Jenson had his hands full with Craig Thatcher, Karl Fenske, and Steve Speltz. Thatcher, the 2002 Wissota national champion assumed control of the runner up spot on lap four and trailed Timm until a caution was displayed on lap 13 for an encounter involving John Doelle and Craig Brightbill.
Brightbill was sent to the rear for his involvement in the accident. On the restart, Timm took the lead with several changes happening behind him. Fifth running Eric Pember made a bold move on the high side and slid by Jenson and Fenske.
Pember then swapped positions with Thatcher several times before taking control of the two hole.
Racing action was halted on lap 18 when an accident involving Lonnie Earney, Dave Cain, and Kerry Ledebuhr bunched the field again. Thatcher left the track with a flat tire and then rejoined the field at the rear.
Timm set the pace on the restart, Fenske was able to swap places with Pember as the two raced side by side exchanging position. Tony Bahr started to make his presence felt as he moved into the top five.
John Doelle brought out the yellow on lap 24 spinning on the front stretch and Timm's margin was cut again. Timm led the final six laps to pick up the win. Bahr planted his mod on the bottom of the track and moved up into the second spot with four laps to go.
Timm was able hold off the veteran late model and mod pilot to gain his second win of the year at the track. Bahr was second, Pember third, Les Duellman fourth, and Jenson fifth.
"This is the first race that we've finished with this car in about ten races," Timm said. "We've had a bunch of things break and had a lot of bad luck. I think we were leading like eight out of those ten races and then something would break. A lot of times it was just little stuff. Last week, we broke a drive plate while running third. We had the transmission linkage break while leading one night. The crew put a lot of hard work into this car and it finally paid off."
Super stock points leader Kelly Anderson was able to grab the lead from the second row and held off Jason Johnson to grab the 20 lap feature. Johnson chased Anderson throughout the feature but was unable to gain enough momentum on the high side to complete a pass.
Behind them, Dan Nissalke, Shawn Huse, Troy Langowski, and Scott Duval put on an intense battle for the three, four and five spots. In the end, Nissalke grabbed third, Duval, in Vince Weber's Mopar finished fourth and Langowski fifth.
Eleventh starting Travis Krause passed David Nastvold on lap nine to win the street stock feature. Krause won for the 15th time in 19 nights racing. Rookie Keith Tourville made an impressive charge to second from deep in the field. Nastvold held on for third. Chuck nerland making a rare appearance grabbed fourth and Brad Dennis was fifth.
Jeff Ringenberg assumed control of the Midwest modified feature halfway through the 15 lap event to post the win. Harlan Morehart was second followed by Dan Fagerlind, Dan Hesch and Ryan Weber.
