Wehlage Tops Nastvold In Streets At Fox Ridge

May 30, 2003

David Nastvold appeared headed toward the first street stock feature win of his career. The timing of the occasion was perfect for the Galesville, (Wis.) driver, he had led the first thirteen laps. The Jailhouse Saloon, his primary sponsor, filled the sky boxes with fans cheering their approval. Yes, the night was perfect for Nastvold’s first win.

Until, Shaun Wehlage crashed the party. Wehlage was patiently waiting in the wings for the right opportunity interrupt Nastvold’s perfect evening. Nastvold grabbed the lead on the opening lap and raced with Daryl Foegen for control of the lead in the early part of the 15 lap main.

Battling directly behind the two leaders, Danny Hanson and Brad Dennis staged their own little battle. Tagging behind the top four were the Grim Reaper (Wehlage) and the Big Bad Wolf aka Travis Krause.

On lap five, Hanson took second from Foegen and began to pressure Nastvold for the lead. Things got shook up behind the leaders on lap seven, and the outcome of the feature was affected.

Dennis checked up exiting turn two and slowed Foegen and Krause. Wehalge and Tom Hund running the bottom and trailing made a quick passes to move into the top five. Wehlage set out in pursuit of Nastvold and Hanson and gained the two spot on lap eleven.

Wehlage snuck his nose under Nastvold on lap 12 when racing action was stopped for a crash on the front straight. Foegen’s right rear tire had separated from his racer. The unfortunate Dennis hit the loose wheel and was launched into the front stretch wall. Dennis’car received substantial front end damage and both cars were eliminated from the feature.

The restart put Wehlage and Hanson behind Nastvold. Wehlage gunned past Nastvold on the restart to take the lead. A lap later, Krause moved around Nastvold for second. Wehlage beat Krause to the checkers for his second victory of the season at Fox Ridge.

Hanson dropped out on lap 13, his fate determined by a battery cable come loose.

“I was just sitting back there, waiting patiently. Just hanging out on the bottom waiting for my chance. The track was pretty slick so you couldn’t be in a big hurry,” said Wehlage. “We were racing side by side when the caution came out. The yellow probably helped us a little, but I think we could’ve got without,” he added.

Nastvold finished third with Hund and Jon Laumb rounding out the top five.

Bob Timm won his first modified feature of the season at the track Friday night. Front row starters Dan Hesch and Eric Pember paced the field on the opening lap. The two drivers made contact in turn four. Pember slowed on the front stretch, his evening finished.

Hesch led the field on the restart, the sixth starting Timm running second. Hesch fended Timm off for two laps before Timm took the lead on lap four. Timm was unchallenged during the remainder of the event.

Hesch was able to hold off challenges from Mick Glenn and Karl Fenske to capture second. Fenske tallied third while Les Duellman slipped past Glenn for the four spot. Scott Duval made a late race pass for fifth.

Terry Casey made his first trip to Fox Ridge in 2003 a victorious one. Pole sitter Eric PEmber led the first three laps before Casey blew by on lap three riding the cushion. Casey then extended his lead to ten car lengths, while Pember chased. Behind the top two, Lance Matthees and Keith Foss fought for third.

Foss gained the three spot on lap eight and closed on Pember for the two spot. Late in the race the drivers moved to within a few car lengths of Casey and it looked like Pember may regain the lead.

With only a few laps to go, Pember was on Casey’s tail. Pember dove to the bottom in turn two and attempted to pass. The lapped car of Jeff Keeney cut Pember off, slowing his momentum. Casey revived by the wake up call, sped off for his first late model win of the season.

“It’s good to finally win one. Our season has been nothing but troubles. We’ve broke three motors and just had a lot of bad luck. I started slowing down there, toward the end. I thought I had checked out on the guys and didn’t know that Eric was that close. I wanted to take it easy ‘cause I didn’t want to wreck anything. When he got close to me, I just put it down again,” Casey said.

Casey’s motor problems have yet to be resolved as he reported the engine sustained a cracked head during the evening.

Mark Teske claimed the 20 lap super stock feature. Teske was able to overcome Troy Brand who beat Teske on the start. Brand led the first eight laps before Teske netted himself the lead.

Brand stayed close enough to challenge for the next few laps before falling back. A late race caution for a spinning Travis Wagner bunched the field and allowed third running Mike Weber to challenge Brand for second. Weber slipped past Brand with four to go unable to close ground on Teske.

Brand finished third, Kelly Anderson fourth and last weeks winner Shawn Huse was fifth.

Dan Koziol beat Dan Hesch to claim the Midwest modified feature.
