Fenske Holds Off Duellman For Win

Karl Fenske held off a late challenge from Les Duellman to capture the 18 lap Wissota modified feature Friday night at the Fox Ridge Speedway.

Fenske started the main event on the inside of row one and held off an early challenge from Scott Duval. Kerry Ledebuhr was on the move from his sixth starting spot and began mixing it up with Duval for second place.

By lap six, Duellman had joined the fracas and the three drivers swapped positions during the middle of the race. Duellman finally gained control of the runner-up spot on lap 13 and set sail for Fenske.

Duellman was able to pull within striking distance on Fenske but unable to find the momentum to pass on the final lap. Fenske won his second feature of the season.

Duellman, debuting a brand new Dirt Dueller chassis, was able to overcome a bad re-draw (12th) to place second. Ledebuhr had his most impressive run of the season placing third. Bob Timm charged to fourth after starting 19th in the field. Timm dropped out of his heat and was relegated to the back of the field for the feature. Rookie Ben Anderson showed promise taking home fifth. Anderson started 17th and was able to join the top five at the midpoint of the main event.

Shawn Wehlage made the most of his front row starting spot and triumphed in the 15 lap Wissota street stock feature. Wehlage jumped out to the early lead and Brad Dennis followed in pursuit of the Stockton Minn. youngster.

Jeremy Somer started sixth on the field and quickly made his way to the top three. Somer moved into second on lap 8 and fled out after the leader. A lap nine yellow for David Nastvold, with a broken right front suspension, closed the field.

Wehlage was able hold off Somer on the restart, two laps later Somer made a valiant effort on the bottom of the track coming out of turn two. The two raced side by side but Wehlage withstood the challenge. Wehlage won by two car lengths over Somer. Travis Krause was able to muster third after having a difficult getting through traffic. Fourth finisher Danny Hanson fought off Krause for the last four laps only to lose third place on the final go. Daryl Foegen rallied for a fifth place finish after starting 12th.

Before Friday night, Shawn Huse had never won a feature race in the Wissota super stocks. Late Friday night, Mr. Huse had finally shaken that bug. Not only did he shake the bug, he did it in convincing fashion dominating the field in the 18 lap feature.

Huse's accomplishment may be even more meaningful considering he beat polesitter, Mark Teske, the 2002 Wissota national champion. Teske led the first lap with Rod Dregney in tow. A stalled car in turn three brought out the caution. After one failed restart, the race resumed and Huse bolted by Teske to grab the lead on lap two.

Huse was able to pull away from Teske, meanwhile Teske had his hands full of Dan Nissalke and Jason Johnson. The three drivers dueled all over the track with Teske settling into the second spot.

Johnson was able to gain the third spot from Nissalke. Late in the race, Nick Herrick was able to slip into fourth and Nissalke was fifth.

Huse was pleased with the results. "This is my first (feature) ever. I've led a few on the last lap before, but I was never able to get it done. I've got to give a lot of credit to my car builder, Wayne Harris, and the engine builder, Tim Ludwigson. This is the first time that I have ever actually had a new car, and it is really good. Last year, the car I had, I had to keep it straight or I was in trouble. Now, with this car, I can put it down and just go. The car handles really great. It feels really good to finally win one."

Eric Pember has stopped Keith Foss' streak in the late model class. Pember jumped out in front of Tom Nesbitt at the start of the feature and cruised to the 20 lap feature win. Nesbitt ran second for the early part of the race, until Lance Matthees took over second on lap six.

Matthees needed the benefit of yellow to close ground on Pember, unfortunately that yellow never came for Matthees. The 20 lap main went green to checkered for the first time this season. Nesbitt was able hang on for third. The best racing of the feature was among Foss, Teske and Timm for the fourth through sixth spots. The three drivers juggled positions. In the end, Foss grabbed fourth and Timm fifth.

Jack Larson led the Midwest modified feature wire to wire to gain his second straight win at the track. Dan Fagerlind and Jeff Ringenburg were unable to chase him down. Bud Pehler and Tom Brink rounded out the top five in the 15 lap feature.
