Rickert Takes Legends National Qualifier At Fergus Falls Raceway

By Cody Lewis

(FERGUS FALLS, MN) August 1st--Jay "The Rocket" Rickert only led one lap, but it was the most important one of the race as Rickert won the Great North Legends National Qualifying Race at the Fergus Falls Raceway. At the wave of the green, Lew Lunsman launched into the lead as Todd Tracy slipped into second. Within a full lap, Tracy took over the lead, putting his blue and orange number 76 car out front. Not long after, the caution flew for a stalled car on the track. On the restart, Cory Lease was in front, with Tracy and Jon Lewerer behind. Lease continued to lead until around lap 15, when Rick Dubay brought out the yellow. On the restart, Lease continued to show the way, but now had Tim Brockhouse behind him in second. Some laps later, Brockhouse went into a spin in a failed attempt to invade the top spot. On the restart, Tracy took back the lead. Tracy led the next couple of laps, before he got loose out of turn four on the last lap, thus allowing Rickert to slip by and pass under the checkers first for an unexpected win.

Oren "The Wild Child" Hoeper returned to Victory Lane in the Modified Feature. The start of the race saw cars run 4-wide twice in the first lap. No heavy contact was made as everything sorted out. Hoeper sprang from second to take the lead, with Jason Hintermeister close behind. Jon Lewerer ran in third to cap off the leading trio. Hoeper seemed to have found his groove as he continued to lead lap after lap of the caution-free race to take home the win. Hintermeister and Lewerer followed close to round out the top three.

Blake Bjorklund took his second win of the season by making a late race move in the ASA Late Model Feature. Jeff Lofquist was leader after the green flag waved to start the main event. As Lofquist continued to lead, Trent Snyder and Bryan "The Big Dawg" Roach were gaining on him. Lofquist was able to hold them off for a couple of laps, before giving up the position. Snyder and Roach raced side-by-side for the lead. As Roach made a move to take over the lead, contact was made and Roach hammered the backstretch wall, flattening the nose of his car. Roach ducked into the pits and was out fast enough to continue the race. Both Snyder and Roach were forced to the back of the lead lap drivers in the lineup. On the restart, Bjorklund took the lead, with Rich Snyder now in second. Snyder kept his car close to Bjorklund, but couldn’t find how to get by, allowing 17-year-old Bjorkland to take his second win in his rookie season.

The UCAR Feature event was dominated by Sam Hanson from start to finish, as Hanson generated a large, comfortable lead on his way to the win. Dan Bolstad brought out the only caution of the race, as his car went straight into the turn one wall, but was able to continue race after the pack was reset. Hanson continued to lead after the caution and he kept on going to bring home the spoils of victory.

Cory Eggen turned a great start into a great finish in the Thunder Car Feature. At the start of the race, Eggen went out to the lead after most the others up front made contact and lost momentum. Mark Milbeck settled into second with Kent Reisenauer and Shawn Robinson both wanting to take it away, making it a three-way battle for the runner-up position. Meanwhile up front, Eggen continued to lead the rest of the way to score the win. Reisenauer made the move to second, while Milbeck hung on to third and Robinson completed the top four.
