Jon Olson Claims First Win At Fergus Falls Raceway
By Cody Lewis
(FERGUS FALLS, MN) July 18th--Jon Olson claimed his first ever Feature Win in
the Modified main event at Fergus Falls Raceway. The first caution came early
in the race on lap 4 with a spin in turn two. After the restart, Oren Hoeper
started moving through the pack from next to last to take second. George
Sniezek caught fire on the front stretch on lap 11 to cause a red flag.
Fortunately Sniezek sustained no injuries. When the race continued, Hoeper
began his attempt to put Jon Olson behind him. However, Olson wasn’t going
to surrender his lead, and took the long awaited win.
Three-time Track Champion Rich Snyder became the winner of the Late Model
Feature as he topped the 15 car field. Previous winner Blake Bjorkland took up
the lead after the green waved, followed by Dan Shaw. Bjorkland led nearly a
third of the race, but a tangle with Trent Snyder put Rich Snyder out front
for the restart. Shortly thereafter, Bjorkland and Rick Harig made contact out
of turn four to bring out the yellow. Rich Snyder once again took the lead on
the restart and led the rest of the way. Meanwhile, Tim Olson was putting the
pressure on Randin Olson for third. Tim was able to get by Randin very near
the end of the race to take home third, with Randin finishing a strong
fourth.
Jay "The Rocket" Rickert proved himself a strong contender in the
Great North Legends after dominating most of the feature race. The start of
the race saw Cory Lease assume the early lead, in front of Rickert and Jon
Lewerer. Rickert and Lewerer moved up to create a three-man skirmish for the
lead. Rickert moved up front and began expanding his lead without delay.
Moving through the pack simultaneously was Andy Hansen, who quickly moved to
second before long. Hansen was ever so slowly closing the gap between himself
and Rickert, but he would not be able to catch up without a caution, allowing
Rickert to make the trip to Victory Lane.
The action near the end of the race program was definitely worth the wait,
with good door-to-door racing and UCARs flying everywhere. Dan Bolstad
survived the challengers and avoided wrecks to rein victorious. Not too far
into the race, there was a major tangle on the front stretch, including at
least five cars, with Rick Third getting the worst of it all. The remainder of
the pack was reset and the green flew again, with Dan Bolstad moving into the
lead. During the next several laps, Bolstad continued to widen his gap. David
Bolstad came in second, a safe distance behind Dan Bolstad.
Action was no less in the Thunder Cars, with the same close racing and plenty
of mishaps. What started as a large 13 car pack ended with only six contenders
after a pileup caused 6 DNFs. Three cars had to be towed off the track,
including Jonathan Olmsheid’s machine, which took the worst of the wreck.
When they got going again, Mark Milbeck took the lead off the restart, with
Jerry Messer getting by him before the end to take the win.
