Firework Spectacular brings Big Crowd and Big Fun
By Cody Lewis
(FERGUS FALLS, MN) July 11th--The "Big Dawg" Bryan Roach hung around
near the front for most of the race and in the end, he came out on top of the
ASA Late Model Feature at the Fergus Falls Raceway. When the green flag
signaled the start of the Late Model Feature, it was AJ Rhoads that jumped out
to the early lead. Rhoads kept his lead until lap 22 when Roach took over the
race. Just behind the leaders, the action was happening as the battle was for
third between 17-year-old Blake Bjorklund and 19-year-old Trent Snyder. In the
end, it was Roach, followed by Rhoads, Snyder, and Bjorklund passing under the
checkers.
In the Modified Feature, John Notch showed the way to the checkers, though not
unchallenged. A spin on lap two brought out an early caution and almost
instantaneously after the restart, there was another spin as Matt Anderson,
slid down to the infield. Notch grabbed the lead on the restart and Hoeper
went into pursuit. The two leaders went around the track again and again, with
Hoeper trying everything to get by Notch. He went high, he went low, he
stopped nowhere, but Notch just wasn’t giving away his lead. Hoeper was
right on him to take second, while Jon Lewerer rolled in third.
Tim Brockhouse, driving his son Jaysen’s car, proved his mettle when he
found himself victorious in the Great North Legends Feature. Jon Lewerer took
the lead after the green waved and held on, gradually widening his lead until
Todd Tracy came to challenge. Tracy fell back after a loss of momentum, and
Lewerer once again was far out front until a caution brought the pack back
together. Lewerer didn’t let that stop him as he lengthened his lead again
after the restart. Brockhouse and Andy Hansen began a mêlée for second, with
position changes coming often. Brockhouse got past Hansen and started to chase
down Lewerer. Brockhouse got the job done around the halfway point, but it
wasn’t a one-man race. Five contenders near the front were chasing behind
Brockhouse, but no one was able to get by him as he raced to victory.
Rick Third dominated the caution-free UCAR feature, continually widening his
already large lead. Slammin’ Sammy Zender seemed to have been having
mechanical problems and was forced off the track shortly after the start of
the race. Also having to leave the track was Shawn Kugler, as Rick Third
continued to dominate and win for the first time ever at Fergus Falls Raceway.
The Thunder Cars also had a caution-free race with Shawn Robinson putting his
car in Victory Lane once more. Tom Weinhandl took the early lead, and on lap
two, he joined Jonathan Olmscheid and Mark Milbeck in a three-wide race around
the entire track. Weinhandl fell back and Robinson assumed the lead for the
remainder of the race to take the win.
