Pokorski, Dippel, Herrmann, Jorgenson & Koehler Top EWSC Racing
By Mary Horneck
August 13, 2005- After flipping his Modified car one week ago, West Bend’s #
4 Paul Pokorski came out strong from the green flag to take control of the
25-lap A-Main. Waldo’s # 9 Lee Mohs followed in second with Pokorski
building a full straightaway lead over the field. By lap five, another
Waldo driver, fast qualifier and heat winner # 2 Billy Hafemann charged from
his last row starting position to pull into third. Two laps later,
Hafemann flew around Mohs to take over second with Pokorski far out in the
lead. Just as the leader was approaching lapped traffic, the first and
only yellow flag halted the hard-charging Pokorski and pulled him back to
within striking distance. On the restart, Pokorski lined up out in front
alone with Hafemann and Mohs directly behind him. Pokorski did not let a
restart slow him down. As the green flag restarted the rest of the laps,
Pokorski again jumped out in front with Hafemann in the challenge spot.
Point leader Plymouth’s # 98 Tim McMullen charged passed two cars after the
restart to take over fourth behind Mohs. As Hafemann focused on catching
the charging leader Pokorski, McMullen concentrated on taking over third from
Mohs. For the next four laps, McMullen stayed tucked down low on the
track with Mohs running the mid-groove. In lap 17, McMullen threw his
car to the high groove and worked his way around the track. Coming
around a lap later, McMullen couldn’t get any higher on the track as he
charged passed Mohs in turn three to take over third behind leader Pokorski
and second place Hafemann. As the laps clicked off, Pokorski charged
through the checkered flag to win the Winged Super Modified A-Main.
Hafemann followed in second with McMullen and Mohs rounding out the top
four. The Bubba’s Place Hard Charger Award went to Hafemann for
passing 8 cars.
Sheboygan’s # 21 Paul Dingel grabbed the early lead in the Limited Late
Model A-Main race with another Sheboygan driver # 67 Steve Ziegelbauer on his
bumper. By lap six, a three way battle was waging for second place as
Ziegelbauer had to hold off # 11 Howie Weiss of Glenbeulah and # 69 Tim
Thompson of Campbellsport. Four laps later, Ziegelbauer broke free from
the battle to focus once again on leader Dingel just as point leader # 8 Dan
Dippel of Plymouth joined Weiss and Thompson now in a battle for
third. As Ziegelbauer was pulling up to leader Dingel and Dippel moved
into third in lap thirteen, Dingel had a mechanical problem and came to rest
in turn three causing the only yellow flag of the race. On the restart,
Ziegelbauer would set the pace from the front for the two lap “dash” to
the checkered flag. Dippel and Weiss lined up in the second row as the
green flag flew. Ziegelbauer was the first to receive the white flag but
Dippel provided the fans with a last lap pass to win the Limited Late Model
A-Main. Ziegelbauer followed in second with Weiss, Thompson and heat
winner # 65 Keith Borth of Sheboygan rounding out the top five. The
Bubba’s Place Hard Charger went to Dippel for passing 7 cars to win the
race.
Two River’s # 4 Kyle Kudick jumped into the lead at the beginning of the
Super Stock A-Main with # 79 Greg Herrmann of Branch on his bumper. As
most of the field drove three wide going through turns one and two, Herrmann
dove to the inside groove on the third lap to pass Kudick for the lead of the
race. Two laps later, with leader Herrmann and Kudick battling for the
lead, Sheboygan’s # 2 Mike Damrow moved into third and last week’s A-Main
winner # 66 Mike Bastian of Manitowoc followed in fourth. As Herrmann
charged out in front to secure control of the race, Bastian drew closer to
Kudick. By lap eight, Bastian moved into second and began chasing leader
Herrmann while fast qualifier and heat winner # 7 Brian Gilles of Plymouth
moved into third. Bastian and Gilles charged around the track and caught
up to leader Herrmann in the final laps of the race but Herrmann remained
focused and took the checkered flag to win the Super Stock A-Main. Heat
winner Bastain followed in second with Gilles in third.
Plymouth’s # 35 Ben Schmidt made a last lap
pass of # 85 Dave Haag also of Plymouth to finish fourth and fifth
respectively. The Bubba’s Place Hard Charger award in the Super Stock
division went to Gilles for passing eight cars.
In the All American Mighty 4 A-Main, # 17 Mike Kuhfuss of Howards Grove
grabbed the lead in the first lap with # 27 Jeff Gierke of Kiel on his
bumper. Kuhfuss built a comfortable lead by lap six when the only yellow
flag halted the racing action and pulled Kuhfuss back to the field. On
the restart, Kuhfuss lined up out in front by himself to set the pace with his
son # 77 Mark Kuhfuss and heat winner # 11 Tim Jorgenson of DePere just behind
him. When the green flag flew to restart the race, Jorgenson charged
passed both Kuhfuss cars to take over the lead of the race. Jorgenson
continued his charge and took the checkered flag to win the Mighty 4 feature.
Mike Kuhfuss followed in second with Mark in third. Jorgenson also was
named the Bubba’s Place Hard Charger after passing 9 cars to win the
feature.
Heat winner # 65 Bret Koehler of Two Rivers charged to the early lead in the
Eastern 8 A-Main race with # 75 Paul Steffens of Appleton and # 3 Joshua
Schroeder of Manitowoc moving into second and third. By lap six, the
battle was for fourth with # 71 Greg Steffens of Appleton and # 40 Jay
VanAsten of Chilton charging around the track side-by-side. Two laps
later, Greg Steffens moved into third and Van Asten followed in fourth.
Four laps from the end of the race, a yellow flag came out to pull the field
back together. When the race was restarted, Koehler once again jumped
into the lead. In a white flag lap pass, # 31 Jared Van Laanen of Green
Bay charged into second passed both Steffen cars. At the checkered flag,
Koehler won the Eastern 8 A-Main followed by Van Laanen in second with Greg
Steffens and Paul Steffens finishing third and fourth. The Bubba’s
Place Hard Charger went to Van Laanen after passing 10 cars.
