Klumb Ends 13 Year Drought with EWSC Win
by Sara Brion
Manitowoc, WI, June 11, 2005 - Dennis “The Menace” Klumb, Grafton
campaigner, found his way back into victory lane at the Expo in grand style,
after a 13 year drought as the thunder of the engines returned to the Expo,
after a week off due to thunderstorms that forced the cancellation of the
races last weekend.
The EWSC Modified main event was full of excitement, and lots of thrill for
the fans. In the opening laps there was a tangled mess in between turns one
and two, which brought out the red flag when five cars were involved in a five
car pile-up, with two of the cars rolling over, involved in the melee it was
Reedsville’s Chuck Tuschl; Billy Hafemann, Waldo; along with West Bend’s,
Paul Pokorski, Campbellsport’s, Tony Wondra; and the night’s fast time
qualifier, with a time of 14.779 seconds, on the 1/3 mile Pete Ostwowski, of
Troy Center.
Wondra, and Tuschl, were able to make repairs, and resumed racing, when the
race went green again. Hafemann, was uninjured in the roll over, as was
Pokorski, while both cars had extensive damages.
Ostrowski, Wondra, and Pokorski would not resume racing until the final laps
finishing in 13th, 14, and 15th respectively. Hafemann who had the most
extensive damages, was not able to return to the track and was scored in last
place.
Prior to the restart of the race, Plymouth’s Dave Deicher, had to be towed
off the track, with mechanical problems, he finished the feature in 16th
place.
Racing resumed with Milwaukee campaigner, Brad Swendrowski, leading the pack,
followed by Lee Mohs of Waldo, and Klumb was third.
Wondra, racing without a wing, stalled as he was leaving the track, after the
restart with mechanical problems, and brought out the caution. This time it
was Klumb starting out in front by himself, with Swendrowski, and Chad Kistner
of New Holstein in the top three spots after 7 laps of racing. Swendrowski,
battled with Klumb, for the lead lap after lap, but on lap 26 with 4 laps left
Swendrowski, fell back, then there was another crash, and this time it was,
Plymouth’s Tim McMullen, who came around the corner, and spun into the
stalled car of Billy, Schmitz, EWSC Winged Super Modified Rookie of the Year
contender from Mukwonago.
In the final laps Klumb was able to hold off Tuschl, who had battled his was
to the front finishing in second place, passing 11 cars, Kistner in third,
Butch Hafemann, Campbellsport was 4th, and fifth place went to Manitowoc’s
Kris Hansen.
Point’s leader, Gary Laack, who was the second fastest qualifier, left the
track with transmission problems, during the first heat race, that kept him
from competing the remainder of the evening, Laack is currently still in first
place, with McMullen just twenty points behind him in second place.

Limited Late Model action saw Plymouth’s, Scott Haugstad, taking home the
checkers, who was very impressive and had a commanding lead over the rest of
the field. Dan Dippel the current point’s division leader settled for
second place, after working his way through the field, Dippel, was the fastest
qualifier in the LLM’s with a 17.604 for an average speed of 76.8 miles per
hour on the third mile clay oval, Sheboygan native, Keith Borth took third
after holding off, Campbellsport’s Tim Thompson, who finished fourth,

Super Stock feature winner Brian Gilles of Plymouth, continues winning
features, taking home the win in the division’s main event, as well as fast
time of 19.562 seconds, and Bubba’s Place Hard Charger. Gillis took
second place in the heat race, and found he was not alone in the race car; he
found three newborn kittens in the car after the heat race, so the Got Milk?
question was even more appropriate, since the trophies for the night were
sponsored by the Manitowoc County Dairy Committee.
The race was a nail biter all the way to the end. Gilles who passed 11
cars for the win, had his hands full. To get the win, he had to go head
to head with Manitowoc’s local hometown favorite, Mike Bastian, who finished
in second place, and third place finisher Chad Ninmer, Cleveland, not to
mention the two Elkhart Lake Hot Shoe’s Brad Ruh and John Dirks who took
home fourth and fifth place honors.
