by Sara Brion

Manitowoc, WI, May 21, 2005 - The Winged Super Modified feature saw Gary “Drock” Laack, Glenbeulah, rocket to the finish line for the second time in as many race nights, in front of a solid crowd at the 1/3 mile clay oval at the EWSC Salute to the Armed Forces, in honor of National Armed Forces Day local hometown hero, Jeff Uhlig, US Army, threw the green flag to start the Winged Super Modified feature event.  Jeff who returned in October 2004 from the fighting in Iraq was stationed with a transportation unit.

2004 EWSC Track Champion, Paul Pokorski, took the early lead at the start of the race and held the lead until lap nine when the machine of 2nd place challenger Dave Deicher, brought out the caution, Deicher left the track with mechanical problems.  The restart saw Pokorski, Laack, Pete Ostrowski, Tim McMullen, and Billy “Bear” Hafemann in the top five. Laack chased Pokorski, and on lap ten took the lead, however Pokorski would not give up easily and the two battled back and forth for the lead, swapping the lead several times each lap until lap 21 when the race was brought to a halt for debris on the track, now it was Laack out front setting the pace for the restart, with Pokorski, and McMullen side by side in row two. On the final restart Laack, checked out leaving Pokorski, McMullen, and Ostrowski battling for second.  When the final flag flew following Laack to the finish line it was McMullen in second place, followed by the night’s fast time qualifier Ostrowski, Pokorski was fourth, and local hometown favorite, Chris Hanson of Manitowoc, rounding out the top five finishers.  Bubba’s Place Hard Charger was a tie between Laack and Ostrowski each passing seven cars.
