McMullen And Teunissen Win 4th EWSC Main Of 2004
By Mary Burbach

August  21, 2004- Glenbeulah’s # 68 Craig Perko got the jump on the early lead in the Winged Super Modified A-Main feature event over three time A-Main winner # 98 Tim McMullen of Plymouth.  For the first five laps, Perko drove the high groove while McMullen dove to the inside attempting to pass for the lead but Perko pulled the lead each time as they charged of turn four.  In lap six at the start/finish line, McMullen took the lead by a bumper but a lap later, Perko was back in the lead and tried to pull away from McMullen.  Past track champion # 7 Pete Ostrowski passed McMullen for second in lap eight.  When the only yellow flag appeared in lap nine, Perko lined up in front alone with Ostrowski inside and McMullen outside the next row.  Behind them was last week’s A-Main winner # 22 Barry Maas of Cascade and another track champion # 4 Paul Pokorski of West Bend.  The deck was stacked as the green flag restarted the race.  When lap 10 completed, McMullen took over the top spot in the race with Perko chasing him down.  By the mid-point of the race, McMullen began pulling away from the rest of the field.  In lap fifteen, a four car battle for the challenge spot was brewing with Ostrowski now in second, Perko, Pokorski and Maas.  When this battle shook out, Ostrowski began reeling in leader McMullen from second place, Pokorski moved into third with Maas on his bumper and fast qualifier # 62 Gary Laack of Glenbeulah raced into fifth.  Lapped traffic became a factor as leader McMullen charged around the track staying ahead of Ostrowski.  Ten laps from the end, two time A-Main winner Pokorski charged around Ostrowski to take over second.  Now it was Pokorski’s job to reel in McMullen but McMullen began lapping traffic at the back of the field to distance his car out in front.  McMullen dove to the high side of the traffic to make sure he did not get stuck behind lapped cars on the inside of the track.  In lap 27, just as Pokorski, Ostrowski and Laack cleared the lapped cars between their cars and leader McMullen’s, McMullen lapped another car to try to cushion the lead. Coming across for the checkered flag, McMullen dove back to his inside groove to win his fourth Modified A-Main of the 2004 season.  Point leader Pokorski followed in second with Ostrowski, Maas and Laack rounding out the top five.  Pokorski and # 97 Tony Wondra of Campbellsport both passed 7 cars to win the Meyer Motors Hard Charger award for the Modified race.

In the Limited Late Model A-Main feature race, Waldo’s # 67 Melissa Singer grabbed the early lead and began her multi-lap battle with # 21 Mark Dingel of Sheboygan.  By lap five, Plymouth’s # 38 Scott Haugstad pulled into third with # 85 Tim Carman of Sheboygan Falls behind him in fourth.  In lap 13, Singer had built a healthy lead over the field with Dingel and Haugstad side by side to determine second.  In the same lap, Carman and point leader # 69 Brian Cesar of Sheboygan battled for fourth just before the first yellow flag halted the racing action.  When the green flag flew to restart the race, Singer once again took the top spot with Dingel behind her.  Cesar jumped into third with Haugstad on his bumper.  Second in points # 8 Dan Dippel of Plymouth moved into the top five and passed Haugstad the next lap to take over fourth just before the final yellow flag of the race appeared.  When the green flag flew again to restart this race, Cesar used the outside groove to jump into the lead with Singer, Dingel, Dippel and Carman chasing him down.  Cesar wasted no time in distancing his car out in front trying to secure another A-Main win while Dippel started passing cars to pull into second on lap 22.  With the healthy lead and only three laps to go, Dippel could not catch leader Cesar and at the checkered, Cesar won his second Limited Late Model A-Main of the 2004 season.  Dippel followed in second with Singer, Dingel and Carman rounding out the top five.  Cesar also won the Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award for passing 10 cars to win the A-Main.

Last week’s Super Stock A-Main winner # 48 Doug Teunissen of Sheboygan Falls grabbed the lead in this week’s A-Main holding off two-time A-Main winner # 84 Bradley Ruh of Elkhart Lake.  As the field completed lap two, Plymouth drivers, track record holder # 29 Jeremy Sauter, # 15 Brian Kaat and # 19 Phil Coppersmith, raced three abreast for third place.  Two laps later, as leader Teunissen charged out in front, second place Ruh had Kaat on his bumper.  The only yellow flag of the 20-lap race came in lap 18.  Teunissen, who had built a healthy lead, was pulled back to the rest of the field on the restart.  With two laps to go, Ruh lined up inside Kaat in the next row with #4 Kevin Zimbal of Sheboygan Falls and fast qualifier # 35 Ben Schmidt of Plymouth behind them.  At the white flag, Teunissen charged out in front of Ruh and Kaat again while Zimbal held off heat winner # 7 Brian Gilles of Plymouth who moved into fifth.  At the checkered flag, Teunissen won his fourth Super Stock A-Main of the season.  Ruh followed in second with Kaat, Zimbal and Gilles rounding out the top five.  Zimbal, Schmidt and # 89 Paul Dirks of Elkhart Lake shared Meyer Motor Hard Charger honors as each driver passed 6 cars.

In the first Mighty 4 A-Main race,  # 53 Andrew Rein grabbed the early lead until lap six when # 91 Jay Riemer of Sheboygan took the lead briefly. A lap later, two time A-Main winner # 33 Josh Long of Waldo took over the top spot and began lapping cars.  In lap ten, Rein and # 19 Kurt Jakubowski of Sheboygan maneuvered around lapped traffic to try to get within striking distance of leader Long.  Two laps from the end, three time A-Main winner # 42 Jason Juech of West Bend pulled in behind Jakubowski for third.  At the checkered, Long won his third Mighty 4 A-Main in 2004.  Jakubowski followed in second with Juech in third.  Even though winner Long passed 12 cars to win the race, the Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award went to Juech for passing 14 cars.

In the second Mighty 4 main race, # 39 Mike Olson of Plymouth not only jumped out early but charged out in front with a huge lead from the first lap.  Unfortunately for Olson, the only yellow flag appeared in lap three and pulled him back to the field.  When the green flag flew to restart the racing action, Olson again grabbed the lead with # 76 Aaron Hauck also of Plymouth and # 85 Vicky Milbrath of Howards Grove behind him.  A lap later, Milbrath passed Hauck for second and set her sights on Olson. Milbrath continued her charge passed Olson for the lead in lap five. Milbrath maintained control of the race and took the checkered flag to win her first A-Main of the 2004 season.  Olson followed in second with # 7 Wesley Baumann of Elkhart Lake finishing in third.  The Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award went to # 69 Peter Konen for passing 10 cars to finish sixth.
