Tecumseh Employees Maas And Kessler Top Company’s Night At EWSC

By Mary Burbach

August 14, 2004- Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars hosted the annual Tecumseh Power Company Night at the Races highlighted by a lucky fan winning a lawn mower donated by Tecumseh. With only three scheduled night left in the 2004 Miller Lite Season, the point battle heated up with division leaders being determined by as little as a 5-point margin going into the nightly program. By the end of the night, a new points leader took over the top spot in the Limited Late Model division.

Three time A-Main winner # 98 Tim McMullen of Plymouth grabbed the lead of the Modified 30-lap main event on the first lap but Tecumseh employee # 22 Barry Maas of Cascade wanted to go to the winner’s circle. Maas threw his car to the high side of the race track and coming out of turn four on lap five, Maas beat McMullen to the line by a bumper. Two laps later, # 68 Craig Perko of Glenbeulah also passed McMullen on the high side to take over second. As Perko and McMullen battled for second behind leader Maas in the next three laps, point leader # 4 Paul Pokorski of West Bend and # 2 Billy Hafemann of Waldo secured fourth and fifth. As lapped traffic became an issue in lap 11, McMullen passed Perko to reclaim second. A lap later, Pokorski jumped in front of McMullen and Perko to take over the challenge spot and last week’s A-Main winner # 62 Gary Laack of Glenbeulah joined the top five. For the next eight laps, the top five competitors maneuvered around the lapped cars to once again race together in the front. With ten laps to go, Maas held a strong lead over Pokorski while McMullen battled with Laack for third place. In lap 23, McMullen had just a slight bumpers advantage over Laack at the line but Laack pumped up the challenge and took over third a lap later. By lap 26, Pokorski pulled up next to leader Maas and the battle for the lead heated up. With only two laps left in the race, the first and only yellow flag appeared for a car spun on the front stretch. As Maas set the pace alone out in front, Pokorski and Laack lined up behind him poised to take over. As the green flag flew, Maas charged out in front and worked through the next two laps to win his first A-Main of the 2004 season. Pokorski followed in second with heat winner # 97 Tony Wondra of Campbellsport, Laack and Hafemann rounding out the top five. The Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award went to Wondra after passing 10 cars.

Another Tecumseh employee # 16 Brian Kessler of Plymouth jumped to the early lead in the Limited Late Model A-Main race over second place # 12 Matt Buckman also of Plymouth. By lap 8, Kessler had distanced his car out in front alone while Buckman battled with # 11 Howie Weiss of Glenbeulah for second. Substitute driver # 57 JJ Walvoord of Oostburg, running in fourth, was joined by # 69 Brian Cesar of Sheboygan in the top five. Two laps later, after Cesar jumped into third behind Buckman, the first yellow flag halted the racing action and pulled leader Kessler back to the field. After the green flag restarted the race, Cesar passed Buckman to take over second and challenge Kessler for the lead. Five laps later, as Kessler once again was pulling away from the field, Buckman passed Cesar to take back second just before the second and final yellow flag relined up the cars again on lap 16. After the green flag, Kessler charged out in front again and Cesar jumped passed Buckman to reclaim second. As the laps clicked off, Kessler took the checkered flag to win his first A-Main of the season. After winning last week’s A-Main, Cesar finished second with Buckman, Walvoord and # 85 Tim Carman of Sheboygan Falls rounding out the top five. The Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award went to Cesar for passing eight cars.

In the Super Stock A-Main, last season’s division champion # 48 Doug Teunissen of Sheboygan Falls climbed into the lead on lap five after passing # 4 Kevin Zimbal also of Sheboygan Falls. Maneuvering into third, # 12 Brian Goetsch of Sheboygan joined Zimbal in chasing down leader Teunissen. Last week’s A-Main winner # 84 Bradley Ruh of Elkhart Lake moved into fourth with # 99 Rick Hed of Sheboygan Falls on his bumper. Halfway through the race in lap ten, Teunissen and Zimbal charged out in front alone. Two laps later, a yellow flag halted racing action and pulled the leaders back to the field. The green flag restarted the race for two more laps before the final yellow flag halted the race again. On this restart, Teunissen set the pace from the front with now Hed and Zimbal in the row behind him. Goetsch and fast qualifier # 29 Jeremy Sauter of Plymouth rounded out the top five on the restart to make the final six lap dash to the checkered flag. A lap after the green flag flew, Sauter charged into third and then set his sights on Zimbal in second. At the white flag, Sauter took over second and began a last lap charge to pressure leader Teunissen. As the checkered flag flew, Teunissen held off Sauter to win his third A-Main of the 2004 season. Sauter followed in second with Zimbal, # 35 Ben Schmidt of Plymouth and Hed rounding out the top five. Sauter also earned the Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award by passing 10 cars.

In the first of two Mighty 4 A-Mains, # 3 Jason Seehaver of Kiel grabbed the early lead and charged out in front alone. As # 34 Joe Grohskopf of Sheboygan pulled up to within striking distance, the only yellow flag came out in lap eight and relined up the field. After the green flag flew, # 68 Joe Miller of Plymouth jumped passed both Seehaver and Grohskopf to take over the lead. Seehaver charged after him but Miller took the checkered flag to win three Mighty 4 A-Mains in a row. Seehaver followed in second with Grohskopf in third. # 42 Jason Juech of West Bend passed 11 cars to finish fourth and earn the Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award.

In the second Mighty 4 A-Main, # 53 Andrew Rein jumped into the lead at the beginning of the 15-lap race. When the only yellow flag appeared in lap four, Rein retired to the pits with a mechanical problem. After the green flag restarted the race, # 29 Nic Schuette of Glenbeulah took the lead with # 15 Cory Edler of Cascade on his bumper. A lap later, Edler took the lead and charged to the checkered to win his fifth A-Main of the season. Schuette followed in second and # 9 Jason Voss of Glenbeulah finished third. Edler also earned the Meyer Motors Hard Charger honors after passing twelve cars to win the race.

Join Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars on Saturday, August 21st for the second Driver Autograph Night at the Races. After the regular race program, the drivers in the Winged Super Modifieds, Limited Late Models, Super Stocks and All-American Mighty 4’s will hold an autograph session in the pit area with special treats for young fans.
