2003 Track Champion Pokorski Wins Twin 22 Pat Rand Memorial Main
By Mary Burbach

July 17, 2004-  Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars held the 10th Pat Rand Memorial Race of Champions featuring Winged Super Modified Twin 22 A-Mains.  The full race program included the annual Legends of EWSC and MSC Celebration that honored former stock car drivers, crews and officials.  At intermission the Cain’s Bridal Wreath Miss EWSC title was awarded to Amy Lynn Markwardt by outgoing Miss EWSC Becky Buckman.

The Winged Super Modifieds ran Twin 22-lap A-Mains in honor of a fallen EWSC racer, Pat Rand who ran the # 44 Modified and lost his life in a racing accident at the Plymouth track 10 years ago in July. Pat’s daughter Rebecca was the official starter of the Modified Main races.

In the first 22-lap race, # 18 Butch Hafemann of Campbellsport jumped to the early lead with Waldo’s # 9 Lee Mohs on his bumper.  Coming from seventh in lap one, Butch’s son # 2 Billy Hafemann, also from Waldo, passed a car each lap to climb to second behind his dad in lap six. With father Butchie driving the inside groove, son Billy flew to the outside and passed his dad to take over the lead in lap eight.  A lap later, last years track champion # 4 Paul Pokorski of West Bend who was also racing the high side of the track passed Butch for second place.  By lap 11, half way through the race,  Glenbeulah’s # 62 Gary Laack pulled into third with Butch in fourth and # 55 Brian Portschy of Oostburg entering the top five.  On lap 15, Pokorski made a sweeping pass coming out of turn four to pass Billy for the lead.  As Pokorski began lapping cars, the final laps clicked off.  At the checkered, Pokorski won the first Twin 22 with Laack, Billy Hafemann, Portschy and # 97 Tony Wondra of Campbellsport rounding out the top five.  The Meyer Motors Hard Charger award went to Laack after passing 8 cars.

The second Twin 22 was lined up using the finish of the first Twin 22 with the lead lap cars inverted and lapped cars behind them.  Butch Hafemann again took the lead in the first lap of the A-Main with # 99 Chuck Tuschl of Reedsville taking over a lap later.  By lap six, leader Tuschl had Wondra on his bumper with Portschy and # 7 Pete Ostrowski of Troy Center in third and fourth.  Climbing from his tenth place starting position, hard charging Laack was maneuvering through the field and took over fifth place in lap eight. After two yellow flags in the middle of the race, the top spots belonged to Tuschl and Laack.  A lap later, Tuschl and Laack tangled causing another yellow flag stop.  Portschy lined up as the leader to restart the race with Wondra and Plymouth’s # 98 Tim McMullen in second row.  As the green flag flew, Pokorski, winner of the first race, joined them to race to the checkered.  McMullen took over second a lap after the yellow but Wondra battled back.  In lap 18, Wondra and McMullen crossed the line with just a bar separating Wondra in second.  A lap later, it was McMullen’s bumper with the advantage.  When a mechanical problem temporarily sent leader Portschy to the pits on the final yellow, McMullen lined up in front alone with Wondra and Pokorski behind him.  With only a green-white-checkered lap count, Pokorski only had time to pass Wondra for second.  McMullen took the checkered in the second Twin 22 with Pokorski following in second.  Wondra finished in third with the Miller Lite fast qualifier # 22 Barry Maas of Cascade and B-Main winner # 10 Chad Kistner of New Holstein rounding out the top five.  The Meyer Motors Hard Charger award went to Pokorski for passing eight cars to finish second.

When the Twin 22 points were calculated, Pokorski was the overall winner and was presented the traveling Pat Rand Memorial Trophy by the Rand family.  McMullen finished second overall with his win in the second Twin 22 race.

In the Limited Late Model 25-lap A-Main race, # 21 Paul Dingel of Sheboygan took control from the first lap with # 89 Todd Jensema of Sheboygan Falls on his bumper.  Jensema was pressured by another Sheboygan Falls driver # 85 Tim Carman running in third.  In lap six, Carman and Jensema crossed the line almost even with a slight advantage favoring Carman.  As Carman began chasing leader Dingel, Jensema ran third and held off fourth place car # 52 Mark Zimmermann of Kohler and # 5 Terry Goetsch of Sheboygan in fifth.  Without a yellow flag to slow up racing action, the field charged around the Plymouth track to the checkered.  Dingel held strong to win first Limited Late Model A-Main of the season.  Carman followed in second with Jensema, Zimmermann and Goetsch rounding out the top five.  The Meyer Motors Hard Charger award went to # 67 Melissa Singer of Waldo for passing 5 cars.

In the 20-lap Super Stock A-Main, Elkhart Lake’s # 84 Bradley Ruh  grabbed the early lead with Plymouth’s # 45 Joe Schmidt on his bumper.  By lap four, Schmidt took over the lead of the race and # 98 John Dirks followed him to move into second.  A lap later, with Schmidt and Dirks in the top two spots, # 87 Brian Genske of Sheboygan Falls and  # 97 Bob Peter of Howards Grove were joined by # 15 Brian Kaat of Plymouth in the top five.  Halfway through the feature, Kaat made his move and passed Schmidt to move into second behind leader Dirks.  When the only yellow flag occurred in lap thirteen, Dirks lined up in front alone with Kaat inside and Genske outside the next row.  After the green flag restarted the racing action, Dirks held onto his lead and Kaat raced back into second while Genske and # 48 Doug Teunissen of Sheboygan Falls fought for third.  Coming up quickly, # 7 Brian Gilles of Plymouth waited for his opportunity behind the Genske-Teunissen battle and passed both cars for third in lap 16.  A lap later, Teunissen regrouped and took third from Gilles and began pressuring Kaat.  When leader Dirks entered lapped traffic, Gilles made his move and passed both Kaat and Teunissen to retake second place.  At the checkered, Dirks won his first Super Stock A-Main of the season.  Gilles followed in second with Teunissen, Kaat and # 4 Kevin Zimbal of Sheboygan Falls rounding out the top five.  The Meyer Motors Hard Charger award went to Gilles for passing nine cars.

In the first Mighty 4 A-Main race, # 34 Joe Grohskopf of Sheboygan grabbed the early lead and held off first # 77 Mark Kuhfuss of Howards Grove and then # 19 Kurt Jakubowski of Sheboygan Falls.  Just before the only yellow flag in lap five, Grohskopf and Jakubowski crossed the line side-by-side with Grohskopf in the lead by a bumper length.  When the green flag flew to restart the race, Grohskopf lined up out in front with Jakubowski and # 15 Cory Edler of Cascade behind him.  A lap later, Elder jumped into the lead after passing eleven of the fifteen other cars.  At the checkered, Elder held off second place Jakubowski to win his third Mighty 4 A-Main of the season.  Jakubowski followed in second with # 9 Jason Voss of Glenbeulah in third.  Elder earned the Meyer Motors Hard Charger honors.

In the second Mighty 4 A-Main, Dan Meyer in the # 04 Zimbal Racing car took the early lead with # 11 Justin Herbst of Oostburg on his bumper.  By lap three, # 14 Beckie Goetsch of Sheboygan passed Herbst to take over second but just before the first yellow flag in lap five, Herbst took back the second spot to line up behind leader Meyer on the restart.  After the green flag flew again, # 42 Jason Juech of West Bend maneuvered into third and two laps later, Juech passed both Herbst and Meyer to take control of the race.  # 91 Jay Riemer of Sheboygan moved with Juech and passed both cars to pull into second.  Through one final yellow flag on lap twelve, Juech led the race to the checkered flag to also win his third A-Main of the season.  # 03 Sandra Meyer of Plymouth earned the Meyer Motors Hard Charger award for passing twelve cars to finish second.  Riemer followed in third.
