New Drivers – Portschy, Jessen and Teunissen – In Winner’s Circle
By Mary Burbach
June 26, 2004- The Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car Club honored the American
Cancer Society “Relay for Life” event being held at the Plymouth High
School on Friday, July 9th beginning at 6 PM. A number of racing
families with EWSC participate yearly in the event and the Deicher, Erickson,
Brasser and Kaat teams set up fundraisers at the Plymouth track Saturday
night. After tonight’s donations, the Deicher/Erickson/Brasser
team topped $ 20, 000 of funds raised for cancer research.
The Winged Super Modified A-Main race jumped off to a fast start with a solid
22-laps of racing action. # 8 Kris Hansen of Manitowoc grabbed the early
lead with Oostburg’s # 55 Brian Portschy on his bumper. Glenbeulah’s
# 62 Gary Laack, former track champion # 7 Pete Ostrowski of Troy Center
and # 26 Dave Deicher of Plymouth joined Portschy in a chase for the
lead. Building up a solid lead, Hansen motored out in front while
Portschy held off the challengers through the mid-point in the 30-lap
race. Just a lap later, Portschy made his move and maneuvered around
Hansen to take the lead. In the same lap, Laack followed and passed
Hansen for second. Now Laack was in the challenge spot as leader
Portschy began to lap cars. Just as Portschy put a two lapped car
cushion between his ride and Laack’s, the only yellow flag of the race came
out and pulled all the lapped cars to the back of the line up. After the
green flag flew to restart the racing action, Portschy and Laack flew out in
front alone with Hansen, Deicher and # 2 Billy Hafemann of Waldo moving into
the top five. As the laps wound down, Portschy held off Laack to win his
first A-Main of the 2004 season. Laack followed in second with Hansen,
Hafemann and two-time A-Main winner # 98 Tim McMullen of Plymouth rounding out
the top five. The Meyer Motors Hard Charger award went to Hafemann for
passing 7 cars.
In the first lap of the 25-lap Limited Late Model A-Main, Fredonia’s # 88
Dave Jessen shot out in front of the 18 car field with # 21 Mark Dingel of
Sheboygan holding off # 57 John Scharenbroch of Sheboygan and # 38 Scott
Haugstad of Plymouth. By lap 7, Dingel was solidly in second but had
close to a half track to make up to catch leader Jessen when the first and
only yellow flag came out and pulled the field back together. Jessen
lined up out in front alone with Dingel and Scharenbroch in the second row and
# 69 Brian Cesar of Sheboygan and former track champion # 8 Dan Dippel of
Plymouth behind them. A lap after the green flag restarted the race,
Cesar jumped into third and then set his sights on second. One lap
later, Cesar was in second and chasing down leader Jessen. By halfway
through the race, Jessen began lapping cars. As Jessen passed a lap car,
Cesar maneuvered around them. By lap 21, Cesar passed all 6 of the
lapped cars that Jessen passed back to him and was now catching up to the
leader. So Jessen passed 3 more cars before taking the checkered flag to
win his first A-Main of the 2004 season. Cesar followed in second
with Dingel, Scharenbroch and # 85 Tim Carman of Sheboygan Falls rounding out
the top five. Cesar and # 6 Richard Hed of Sheboygan Falls tied for the
Meyer Motors Hard Charger honors by each passing 7 cars.
Returning driver # 80 Luke Scholten of Oostburg grabbed the lead in lap one of
the 20-lap Super Stock A-Main race. Last year’s track champion # 48
Doug Teunissen of Sheboygan Falls wasted no time in taking over control of the
race when he passed Scholten in lap two. As Teunissen charged out in
front of the field, heat winner Scholten raced to catch him with Sheboygan
Falls drivers # 87 Brian Genske and # 99 Rick Hed chasing him down.
Genske worked his way up to Scholten’s car and challenged him for second but
Scholten found more power and pulled away from Genske. Five laps from
the end, Teunissen was dealing with lapped traffic in front of his car.
Teunissen charged through the lapped traffic to take the checkered flag to win
his first A-Main in 2004. Scholten followed in second with Genske, Hed
and # 29 Jeremy Sauter of Plymouth rounding out the top five. Meyer
Motor Hard Charger honors went to the Damrow Brothers car # 2 and # 47 Paul
Perronne of Plymouth for each passing five cars.
In the first of two All American Mighty 4 A-Main races, the Zimbal Racing car
(# 04) grabbed the early lead in the 15-lap race with # 62 Eric Muehlbauer
of Kiel and # 14 Beckie Goetsch of Sheboygan on its bumper. By lap
six, # 15 Cory Edler of Cascade maneuvered into fourth. Two laps later,
Edler passed Goetsch to fall into third just before the only yellow flag of
the race halted the racing action. After the green flag flew, Edler
jumped passed both Zimbal and Muehlbauer to take the lead. # 71 Tammy
Dickmann and # 91 Jay Riemer both of Sheboygan followed Edler and began
chasing him down. Edler stayed in the top spot and won his first A-Main
of the season. Dickmann followed in second with Riemer in third and
two-time A-Main winner # 42 Jason Juech of West Bend in fourth. The
Meyer Motors Hard Charger award went to winner Kaat for passing 11 cars.
Sheboygan’s # 0 Tim Kaat grabbed the early lead in the second Mighty 4
A-Main race. Kaat motored his car out in front of the field with # 94
Matt Weber and # 76 Aaron Hauck of Plymouth chasing him down. By lap
five, returning champion Tim Sauter driving the # 9 Voss car passed Hauck to
take over third. A lap later, Sauter passed Weber to pull into the
challenge position. Sauter had his work cut out for his as Kaat had
built up a half-track lead over second place. Each lap, Sauter made
progress. In lap 12, when Kaat made a very wide corner in turn 4, Sauter
was there to take advantage of it and passed for the lead. A lap later, third
place car # 85 Vicky Milbrath of Howards Grove passed Kaat to take over
second. At the checkered, Sauter won the second A-Main race with
Milbrath in second. Kaat and # 03 Sandra Meyer of Plymouth rounded out the top
four. The Meyer Motors Hard Charger award went to Sauter for passing 11
cars to win.
