Maas, Ritchie, Gilles And Dorzok Top EWSC Race At Manitowoc Expo
By Mary Burbach
August 30, 2003- Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars returned to the Manitowoc Expo
for the Labor Day Weekend Autograph Night at the Races. Over 100 cars
hit the track at the Expo grounds to compete for points as the EWSC 2003
season begins to wind down. With only two more EWSC point shows after
this Saturday, the “points race” is in full force and the racing is
intense.
In the Winged Super Modified A-Main, # 97 Tony Wondra of West Bend jumped to
the early lead in the first lap followed by # 68 Craig Perko of Glenbeulah.
As Wondra raced out in front of the pack alone, Perko began his battle with
fourth-in-points # 98 Tim McMullen of Plymouth and point leader # 4 Paul
Pokorski of West Bend. By lap four, Perko had a slight advantage over
the side-by-side racing of McMullen and Pokorski but a lap later, all three
cars were crossing the scoring line together. McMullen ducked to the
inside as Perko and Pokorski raced on the high side. Behind this
three-car battle, # 22 Barry Maas of Cascade and # 2 Billy Hafemann of Cedar
Grove were competing for fifth place. On lap side, Hafemann dove to the
low groove to pass Maas by a bumper at the line but Maas charged back and
retook fifth the next lap. At the same time, McMullen’s charge paid
off as he passed Perko to take over second by a bumper. With McMullen,
Perko and Pokorski in a tight pack together, second place was still up for
grabs. Meanwhile, Wondra was approaching lapped traffic. McMullen
and Perko stuck together as Pokorski turned his attention to Maas who was
challenging for fourth. By lap ten, Wondra kept a solid lead, McMullen
was catching up and Maas was ascending on Perko for third. Pokorski fell
back for a few laps and regrouped to enter the top five again in lap
fourteen. On the same lap, Maas flew to the high side of the track to
pass McMullen for second as Wondra passed another lapped car. With this,
Maas dove down low to pass the lapped car to challenge Wondra for the
lead. On lap 16, Maas moved back up to the high side of the track with
Wondra on the inside groove and Pokorski moved into fourth behind third-place
McMullen. A lap later, Maas took over the lead and Pokorski raced passed
McMullen and Wondra for second. For the next six laps, Maas and Pokorski
wove in and out of lapped cars to hold onto first and second. Before lap
23 could be completed, the first yellow flag in the A-Main came out.
Going back to lap 22 for the restart lineup, lapped cars were pulled out with
Maas in the lead, Pokorski on the inside and McMullen on the outside of the
second row. When the green flag flew, Maas again grabbed the lead and
Pokorski broke and fell back in the pack. Hafemann charged into second
with McMullen in third. In lap 27, a yellow flag incident sent McMullen
and then Pokorski to the pits not to finish the race. After the green
flag, Wondra jumped into second behind leader Maas when a second yellow flag
stopped the action again. On this restart, Hafemann used the opportunity
to grab second. At the checkered, Maas won his first A-Main of the
season. Hafemann followed in second and heat winner Wondra in
third. # 8 Kris Hansen of Manitowoc and # 99 Chuck Tuschl of Reedsville
rounded out the top five and the final cars on the lead lap of the 30-lap
race. The Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award went to Hafemann and Hansen
for passing 8 cars each.
Visiting car # 01 Jeff Curtin of Shawano grabbed the early lead of the 25-lap
Limited Late Model A-Main at the Manitowoc Expo. # 11 Dave Haag and # 12
Matt Buckman, both of Plymouth, moved into second and third before a yellow
flag stalled the racing action in lap three. As the field was relined
up, Haag headed to the pits which place Buckman and # 72 Chad Espen of
Kewaskum directly behind leader Curtin. As the race restarted,
second-in-points # 77 Brian Cesar of Sheboygan jumped from fifth to second
behind Curtin as # 89 Todd Jensema of Sheboygan Falls maneuvered from seventh
to third. On lap six, Curtin and Cesar were out in front alone as Jensema
raced to join them and another visiting car # 32 Justin Ritchie of New London
joined the top five. A lap later, Ritchie moved into fourth behind
Jensema. As the leaders began lapping cars, the second yellow flag came
out which sent second place Cesar into the pits. As the race restarted,
Ritchie jumped into second behind Curtin. A lap later, Ritchie had the
slight advantage at the line over Curtin. The yellow flag came out one
final time on lap fourteen. As the race resumed, Jensema grabbed second
behind Ritchie who had motored out in front. On the same lap, point
leader # 79 Jim Schmidt of Cleveland fell in behind Jensema for third
place. At the checkered flag, Ritchie took home the Limited
Late Model feature win. Jensema followed in second with Schmidt in
third. The Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award went to Schmidt for passing
11 cars.
Rookie # 45 Joe Schmidt of Plymouth grabbed the early lead of the 20-lap Super
Stock A-Main race with rookie # 29 Jeremy Sauter of Sheboygan Falls following
in second. By lap two, # 15 Brian Gilles of Plymouth, substitute driving
for third-in-points Brian Kaat, maneuvered into the top five. As each
lap clicked off, Gilles passed another car until in lap five when he jumped
two places into the lead of the race. As lap five was completed, the
first yellow flag halted the race. Gilles lined up in front alone with
Schmidt and # 21 Kyle Odekirk of Plymouth together in the second row.
Two laps later, Odekirk and # 91 Jamie Theobald of Sheboygan ran second and
third behind leader Gilles and # 2 Dale Damrow of Sheboygan joined the top
five. On lap ten, the second yellow flag relined back up the cars again
with Gilles in front and Odekirk and Theobald behind him. A lap later,
Damrow passed Theobald for third and began battling with Odekirk for
second. Through one final yellow on lap 17, Gilles held onto the lead
and won the third A-Main for the car this season. B-Main winner Damrow
followed in second with Odekirk placing third. Scholten and Theobald
rounded out the top five. The Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award went to
Damrow for passing eleven cars.
In the All-American Mighty 4 division, twenty-three cars lined up to compete
in one 15-lap A-Main event at the end of the race program. Rookie # 17
Dave Dorzok of Kewaskum grabbed the early lead in lap one with # 68 Joe Miller
of Plymouth in second. By lap four, # 9 Jason Voss of Glenbeulah passed
Miller for second and second-in-points # 5 Duane Dippel of Plymouth moved into
fourth. A lap later, Dippel had mechanical problems and dropped out of
the top five as # 33 Josh Long and # 28 Steve Boss, both of Waldo, moved into
fourth and fifth. Then Long passed Miller to take over third behind
leader Dorzok and Voss as the leaders started lapping cars. Without a
yellow flag to slow down the racing action, the remaining laps clicked off
quickly with the front cars weaving through lapped cars. Point leader #
88 Tim Sauter of Plymouth joined the top five in lap twelve and passed one
more time before the checkered. Dorzok, fourth in the point standings,
won his first A-Main event. Third in points Voss followed in second with
Boss, point leader Sauter and Long in the top five. The Meyer Motors
Hard Charger Award went to Sauter for passing 16 cars.
