EWSC Point Battle Tightens in Limited Late Models and Super Stocks

By Mary Burbach

August 16, 2003-  Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars held the annual Tecumseh Products Night at the Races this Saturday.  Two of the EWSC divisions ran two point shows this weekend at different tracks.  The Winged Super Modifieds joined the Friday night race program at the Luxemburg fairgrounds while the Super Stocks completed the fourth point show with CCRA at the fairgrounds in Chilton.  This double point earning weekend was important to competitors as there is only four more point shows in the 2003 EWSC season.

Polesitter # 98 Tim McMullen of Plymouth grabbed the early lead in the Winged Super Modified 30-lap A-Main.  # 68 Craig Perko of Glenbeulah pulled in behind McMullen for second place.  Four laps into the race, McMullen was pulling away from the field and racing out in front alone.  Perko began a four-lap-long battle with third place # 3 Robert Enders of Kiel and fourth place # 2 Billy Hafemann of Cedar Grove.  As the first of only two yellow flags flew in lap seven, McMullen was pulled back to the field with Perko and Enders behind him.  After the green flag, McMullen again motored out in front.  Perko jumped back into second with Enders in third.  Second in points # 7 Pete Ostrowski of Milwaukee maneuvered into fourth by passing Hafemann in lap eight.  A lap later, Hafemann passed back and regained fourth place.  In lap 10, Hafemann, Enders and Ostrowski passed the scoring line three abreast.  Hafemann secured third and Ostrowski moved into fourth.  By lap 12, Ostrowski used the high groove to pass low-running Hafemann but a lap later Hafemann charged back and passed Ostrowski to regain third.  Fourth in points # 62 Gary Laack of Glenbeulah crossed the line in lap 13 three-abreast with Enders and Friday night’s A-Main winner in Luxemburg # 97 Tony Wondra of West Bend.  Half-way through the race, McMullen built up a half track lead over second place and the rest of the field as Hafemann kept charging into the second spot.  When the second and final yellow flag halted the racing action in lap 19, McMullen was once again pulled back to right in front of the field.  Hafemann and Laack lined up in the second row with Ostrowski and point leader # 4 Paul Pokorski of West Bend behind them.  As the green flag restarted the race, Laack flew by McMullen to gain the lead and heat winner Pokorski jumped from fifth to third behind McMullen.  In lap 21, Laack held a slight advantage over McMullen as the two crossed the scoring line side-by-side.  Behind them, Pokorski and Hafemann also crossed the line together with only a bumper separating them.  A lap later, McMullen charged back into the top spot with Laack, Pokorski, Hafemann and Ostrowski charging behind him.  Five laps from the end, in lap 25,  Laack and Pokorski both ran the high groove to try and pass leader McMullen but McMullen kept charging ahead.  At the checkered, McMullen won his second A-Main of the season with last week’s A-Main winner Laack finishing second.  Pokorski followed in third with Ostrowski and Wondra in the top five. Point leader Pokorski earned the Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award for passing 13 cars.

In the Limited Late Model division, polesitter # 71 Henry Dickmann grabbed the early lead in the 25-lap A-Main race with # 5 Terry Goetsch of Sheboygan on his bumper.   Substitute driver # 16 JJ Walvoord of Oostburg maneuvered into third followed by # 89 Todd Jensema of Sheboygan Falls and # 38 Scott Haugstad of Plymouth.  In lap seven, Walvoord passed Goetsch for second behind Dickmann and # 65 Keith Borth of Sheboygan moved into the top five.  Half-way through the race, in lap 12, the first yellow flag appeared and relined up the field.  After the green flag flew, Goetsch passed Walvoord to regain second but Walvoord kept charging and took back second in lap 14.  In the next couple laps, Dickmann built up a substantial lead over the field and second place Walvoord. Just as the lead looked secure for Dickmann, a second yellow flag flew and pulled the cars back together.  As the race was restarted, Dickmann grabbed the lead again with Walvoord, Goetsch, last year’s track champion # 8 Dan Dippel of Plymouth and Borth running in a tight pack at the line.  Through 2 more yellow flags, Dippel moved up to third while another past track champion # 3 Jim Pitzen of Plymouth maneuvered into fourth and fast qualifier # 72 Chad Espen of Kewaskum followed in fifth.  At the white, # 57 John Scharenbroch of Sheboygan Falls replaced Espen in fifth.  In bold moves on the last lap, Walvoord passed Dickmann to win his first A-Main of the season as Pitzen passed Dippel to take home third. Scharenbroch followed in fifth.  The Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award went to Scharenbroch for passing 11 cars.  After awarding the points for the night, # 77 Brian Cesar of Sheboygan and # 79 Jim Schmidt of Cleveland tied for the Limited Late Model point lead.

Last Saturday’s A-Main winner # 98 John Dirks of Elkhart Lake grabbed the lead in lap one of the Super Stock main event followed by # 6 Bob Duncan of Sheboygan.  # 80 Luke Scholten of Oostburg maneuvered into third with # 3 Dean Horneck of Kiel and # 29 Jeremy Sauter of Sheboygan Falls just behind him.  On lap seven, just before the first yellow flag appeared, #21 Kyle Odekirk of Plymouth moved into the top five.  After the field was restarted, Scholten passed Duncan to take over second behind leader Dirks as Odekirk jumped into third from fifth.  Another lap later, Odekirk passed Scholten for second as another yellow flag flew.  Half-way through the race, in lap ten, # 4 Kevin Zimbal of Sheboygan Falls moved up into fourth behind Dirks, Odekirk and Scholten.  A lap later, Scholten took over second as Dirks charged out in front by himself.  # 84 Bradley Ruh of Elkhart Lake joined the mix in lap 13 by moving in behind Scholten.  In the same lap, Odekirk battled for fifth with point leader and fast qualifier # 48 Doug Teunissen of Sheboygan Falls.  Five laps from the end, Dirks had a substantial lead followed by Scholten, Ruh, Zimbal and Teunissen.  At the checkered, Dirks won his fourth A-Main of the season.  Scholten and Ruh followed in second and third, respectively.  In a last lap pass, # 85 Steve Schad of Cleveland moved from sixth to finish fourth.  Zimbal followed in fifth.  With his win, Dirks remained in second in the point standings behind Teunissen but gained 16 points on the lead.  Ruh earned the Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award by passing 13 cars to finish third.

Only one yellow flag in lap five halted the racing action in the first All-American Mighty 4 A-Main.  After the green flag flew to restart the race, # 9 Jason Voss of Glenbeulah passed early leader # 71 Tammy Dickmann of Sheboygan while two-time Main winner # 03 Sandra Meyer of Plymouth motored from fourth passed # 33 Josh Long of Waldo and Dickmann to take over second.  As the field was coming out of turn four, Voss led with Meyer, Long, # 17 Dave Dorzork of Kewaskum and # 8 Phil Coppersmith of Plymouth crossing the scoring line four abreast. In lap twelve, second in points # 5 Duane Dippel of Plymouth moved into the top five.  At the checkered, Voss won his third A-Main of the 2003 season followed by Meyer, Dorzok, Dippel and Long.  Dippel earned the Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award after passing nine cars.

In the second Mighty 4 A-Main, a yellow flag on the original lineup for a multi-car accident rearranged the field to take the green flag. # 68 Joe Miller of Plymouth grabbed the early lead followed by # 42 Jason Juech of Kewaskum.  By the first lap, point leader # 88 Tim Sauter of Plymouth moved into the top five.  Sauter climbed steadily through the top spots to secure third place by just a bumper in lap four.  Without another yellow to pull the field back together, Miller maneuvered out in front and began lapping cars.  As the white flag flew, Sauter passed Juech and two lapped cars to take over second behind leader Miller.  At the checkered, Miller lapped one more car to secure his second A-Main win of the season.  Sauter followed in second with Juech in third.  The Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award went to Sauter for passing ten cars.
