Modified Ostrowski And Mighty 4 Gilles Win 3 Mains In A Row

By Mary Burbach

July 26, 2003-  With hot, humid weather on the outside and the Christmas spirit on the inside, EWSC celebrated Christmas in July with Marines collecting “Toys for Tots”, Santa and Mrs. Claus behind the grandstand, reindeer selling tickets and race crews decorating their pit areas.  Over 100 cars showed to compete in the thirteenth race program in the 2003 EWSC schedule.  With August around the corner and the points battle heating up, the competitors are focused on winning and determined to race hard.

In lap 2 of the Winged Super Modifieds 30-lap A-Main, # 98 Tim McMullen of Plymouth took the lead of the 20-car field and set the pace for a fast-paced main event.  As McMullen settled into the lead, three time A-Main winner and current point leader # 7 Pete Ostrowski of Milwaukee climbed from his ninth place starting position into the top five.  A lap later, McMullen sped out in front and Ostrowski passed fourth place # 77 Terry Marten of Sheboygan Falls.  In lap four, Ostrowski passed both # 10 Chad Kistner of New Holstein and # 2 Billy Hafemann of Cedar Grove to pull into second behind McMullen.  By lap five, McMullen, Ostrowski, Hafemann and Kistner raced out in front of the pack.  McMullen keptto the low groove as Ostrowski drove high on the track.  Two laps later, the high groove worked for Ostrowski as he passed McMullen to take control of the race in lap seven.  As Ostrowski maneuvered in the lead, he raced up to the back of the pack and began lapping traffic.  Just before the mid-way point of the race, the only yellow flag would be displayed for a spun car.  On the restart, Ostrowski held the top spot with McMullen and Hafemann directly behind him.  After joining the top five in lap seven, # 4 Paul Pokorski of West Bend joined Kistner in the second full row behind leader Ostrowski.  After the green flag restarted the A-Main, Ostrowski grabbed the high groove again to maintain control of the race and McMullen ducked low.  Hafemann followed Ostrowski to the high side of the track and passed McMullen to pull into second in lap 16.  McMullen battled back the next lap and retook second place.  As McMullen and Hafemann sorted out second place, Ostrowski got further out in front of the field and Pokorski made his move.  In lap 18, Hafemann took back second.  A lap later, Pokorski maneuvered passed McMullen for third.  In lap 20, Hafemann and Pokorski were side-by-side at the line in a heated battle for second.  As Hafemann and Pokorski tried to gain control of the challenge spot, Ostrowski began lapping cars again.  In lap 23, Pokorski passed Hafemann and found three lapped cars between his car and leader Ostrowski.  Pokorski began clicking off lapped cars as quickly as Ostrowski kept passing more.   In lap 27, McMullen made a new charge of his own by passing Hafemann for third with lapped cars between him and second-place Pokorski.  At the white flag on lap 29, Pokorski passed all the lapped cars and pulled in behind Ostrowski.  With only one lap left, the chase for the win was on.  Three time winner Ostrowski and four time winner Pokorski battled to the checkered.  Ostrowski held off Pokorski for the second week in a row to win his third A-Main in as many weeks.  Pokorski followed in second with McMullen, Hafemann and B-Main winner # 97 Tony Wondra of West Bend rounding out the top five.  The Meyer Motors Hard Charger was awarded to # 95 Kenjay Fiedler of Sheboygan Falls for passing eight cars.

With only one yellow flag on the initial start of the Limited Late Model A-Main, the 25-lap race was fast.  Polesitter # 71 Henry Dickmann of Sheboygan grabbed the early lead for the first two laps.  Heat winner # 79 Jim Schmidt of Cleveland passed Dickmann for control of the race in lap three and never looked back.  As Schmidt took the lead, another heat winner # 16 Brian Kessler of Plymouth moved into second.  While he raced to catch Schmidt, Kessler held off point leader # 89 Todd Jensema of Sheboygan Falls now in third.  Dickmann settled into fourth with last week’s A-Main winner # 11 Howie Weiss of Glenbeulah racing in fifth.  As lapped traffic became a factor, Kessler caught up to challenge Schmidt for the lead.  At the line to complete lap 18, Schmidt and Kessler were almost dead even with just a bumper keeping Schmidt in the top spot.  The next lap, Schmidt and Kessler once again crossed together at the start/finish line.  In lap 20, just 5 laps from the end, Schmidt maneuvered a lapped car between his car and Kessler.  Kessler passed that lapped car and Schmidt passed another one.  As the laps counted down, Kessler pulled in behind Schmidt to pressure for the lead again but Schmidt was determined to win his second A-Main.  After his first main win at Manitowoc on Memorial Day weekend, Schmidt maintained control to win the Limited Late Model A-Main.  Kessler followed in second with Dickmann, Weiss and two-time A-Main winner # 3 Jim Pitzen of Plymouth rounding out the top five.  The Meyer Motors Hard Charger honors went to heat winner and B-Main transfer # 6 Richard Hed of Sheboygan Falls after passing 8 cars to finish ninth.

Polesitter # 89 Paul Dirks of Elkhart Lake wasted no time in taking control of the Super Stock A-Main by motoring out in front in lap one.  Two other Elkhart Lake drivers, # 95 Donny Kulow and # 84 Bradley Ruh maneuvered into second and third behind Dirks.  In lap six, point leader # 48 Doug Teunissen of Sheboygan Falls moved into fifth behind fourth place # 0 Mark Scholten of Oostburg.  Without a yellow flag to slow the racing action, Dirks was poised to begin lapping cars in lap eight.  By the mid-point of the 20-lap race, Dirks built almost a half track lead over the field as Kulow passed the lapped cars separating him from the leader.  In lap 11, Teunissen passed Scholten for fourth and focused on Ruh in third.  Ruh and Teunissen battled for laps for control of the third spot.  As this battle continued, past track champion # 98 John Dirks of Elkhart Lake battled first Scholten then # 35 Ben Schmidt of Plymouth for fifth.  By lap fifteen, Dirks secured fifth and snuck up on the Ruh-Teunissen challenge.  A lap later, a three way challenge began between, Ruh, Teunissen and John Dirks.  By this lap, Kulow had to battle through 2 lapped cars to catch leader Paul Dirks.  After lapping one more car, Paul Dirks took the checkered to win his first A-Main of the 2003 season.   Kulow followed in second with heat winner Ruh and Miller Lite Fast Qualifier Teunissen finished third and fourth respectively.  Heat winner and B-Main transfer car John Dirks won the Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award for passing eight cars to finish in fifth.

After # 3 Jason Seehaver of Kiel rolled his car in turns one and two on the initial start, the first Mighty 4 A-Main was re-started with # 68 Joe Miller of Plymouth grabbing the early lead.  Point leader # 88 Brian Gilles of Plymouth was not far behind as he climbed through cars to pull behind leader Miller by lap three.  A lap later, Gilles took control of the race and motored out in front.  After a restart in lap five, # 8 Ken Odekirk of New Holstein maneuvered into second behind Gilles followed by Miller.  Three laps later # 33 Josh Long of Waldo passed Miller to take over third.  Long challenged for second and passed Odekirk in lap 12 to pull in behind Gilles. As the checkered flag flew, Gilles earned the fifth A-Main win for the # 88 car with three wins in the last three races.  Long followed in second with Odekirk, Miller and # 28 Steve Boss of Waldo rounding out the top five.  The Meyer Motors Hard Charger went to race winner Gilles for passing thirteen cars.

In the second Mighty 4 A-Main, # 23 Jeremy Goetsch of Sheboygan took the lead from early pacesetter # 17 Dave Dorzok of Kewaskum in lap three.  A lap later, # 85 Vicky Milbrath of Howards Grove moved into second behind Goetsch to challenge for the lead.  After the only yellow flag of the race in lap six, # 03 Sandra Meyer of Plymouth pulled into third behind Goetsch and Milbrath.  Meyer continued to climb and passed Milbrath a lap later to secure second.  Meyer did not settle into second for long as she passed leader Goetsch the next lap to take control of the race in lap nine.  Returning past track champion # 77 Rich Miske of Belgium joined the mix in fourth with # 71 Tammy Dickmann of Sheboygan in fifth.  In lap ten, just five laps from the end of the race, Miske moved into third and second in points # 5 Duane Dippel of Plymouth maneuvered into fifth.  As Meyer maintained her lead and held off Goetsch, Dippel moved up the field.  At the white flag, Dippel pulled into third.  At the checkered, Meyer won her second A-Main of the season.  Dippel followed up last week’s main win with second place.  Goetsch, Dickmann and Dorzok rounded out the top five.  Dippel earned the Meyer Motors Hard Charger honors by passing eleven cars.

Join Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars for the Lake 98.1 FM Night at the Races on Saturday August 2nd at the Sheboygan County Fair Park in Plymouth.  Added to the typical 10 heat races, 3 B-Mains and 5 A-Mains, the Winged Super Modifieds will hold the division’s annual Mechanics Races at the end of the race program.  The Limited Late Model division also has a points show at the Calumet County Race Association at the Chilton fairgrounds on Friday, August 1st.
