Legends Night Features Solid Racing Action

By Mary Burbach

July 19, 2003-  Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars honored the past Club members of EWSC and the Milwaukee Stock Car Club for the dedication and hard work that built the foundation of racing in Plymouth.  Over 400 honorees RSVP’d for the annual event held this Saturday.  Restored early race cars from the two Clubs were on display behind the grandstand and provided the fans with a demonstration on the track.

After locking in the top four finishers from the three heats to the A-Main, the Winged Super  Modifieds hit the track for a fast 30-lap race.  Last week’s A-Main winner # 7 Pete Ostrowski of Milwaukee grabbed the early lead over # 2 Billy Hafemann of Cedar Grove, who finished second last week behind Ostrowski.  As Hafemann stuck to him, Ostrowski began lapping cars by lap five.  Hafemann picked his way through the lapped traffic to stay on Ostrowski’s bumper.  Four-time A-Main winner # 4 Paul Pokorski of West Bend raced in third.  # 97 Tony Wondra of West Bend and # 42 Matt Van Wyk of Sheboygan Falls maneuvered into the top five.  As Hafemann, Pokorski, Wondra and Van Wyk picked through the lapped cars lap after lap, Ostrowski lapped another car.  Hafemann never gave up and in lap ten, his persistence paid off.  Hafemann took control of the race in a swift move passed Ostrowski. A lap later, Hafemann was continuing to lap cars.  Just as Hafemann was securing his lead, the first of only two yellow flags halted the racing action on lap thirteen.  With the lapped cars put to the back of the restart line up, the race intensified with the cars on the lead lap back together in the front of the race.  As the green flag flew to restart the race, Hafemann grabbed the lead again followed by Ostrowski and Pokorski.  Two laps later, in lap 16, Pokorski grabbed second from Ostrowski and set his sights on the lead.  By lap 20, Hafemann, Pokorski and Ostrowski were joined in the front by # 55 Brian Portschy of Oostburg and # 22 Barry Maas of Cascade.  The lapping began again in lap 21 and before Pokorski could pick through the lapped cars, Ostrowski maneuvered passed Pokorski and two lapped cars on the backstretch to fall in behind leader Hafemann.  For five laps, Ostrowski battled to gain the lead from Hafemann.  In lap 29, just 1 lap from the end of the A-Main, a turn 4 incident caused a yellow flag and sent leader Hafemann into the pits.  Ostrowski lined up in front with Pokorski and Portschy directly behind him.  With a mad dash to the checkered, Ostrowski won his second A-Main in 2003.  Pokorski followed in second with # 99 Chuck Tuschl of Reedsville, Portschy and # 3 Robert Enders of Kiel finishing as the only lead lap cars.  Enders earned the Meyer Motors Hard Charger for passing eight cars.

After transferring through his heat race, front row starter # 71 Henry Dickmann of Sheboygan grabbed the early lead over # 11 Howie Weiss of Glenbeulah.  Rookie # 27 Eric Baesemann of Elkhart Lake took the third spot with #  65 Keith Borth of Sheboygan on his bumper.  Dickmann built up a solid cushion over Weiss and the field when a yellow flag stopped the cars briefly and relined up leader Dickmann with the pack.  At the green, Baesemann wasted no time by passing Weiss for second.  Borth and # 85 Tim Carman of Sheboygan Falls applied pressure to Weiss for third place.  When the only other yellow flag came out in lap 14, Weiss maneuvered passed Baesemann and Dickmann to take control of the race. Dickmann battled back but Weiss looked determined to win the race.  At the checkered flag, Weiss still had control and won his second A-Main of the 2003 season.  Dickmann sat solidly in second with Baesemann, # 72 Chad Espen of Kewaskum and # 77 Brian Cesar of Sheboygan rounding out the top five.  The Meyer Motors Hard Charger honors went to # 44 Jim Lavey of Sheboygan for passing nine cars.

Without any yellow flags to slow up the racing action, the 20-lap Super Stock A-Main lined up with # 74 Chad Ninmer of Cleveland and # 22 Jamie Gauger of Sheboygan setting the pace in the front row.  Ninmer took the lead on lap one and motored out in front.  Gauger moved into second and battled for the lead.  From the green flag, Friday night’s A-Main winner at the Chilton point show # 80 Luke Scholten of Oostburg held the third spot behind Ninmer and Gauger.  As the field completed lap seven, Scholten passed Gauger and moved into second behind Ninmer.  Scholten charged at Ninmer to try to take home two wins in as many nights.  Ninmer would not give in and took the checkered flag to win his first Super Stock A-Main of the 2003 season.  Scholten followed in second with Gauger in third and # 35 Ben Schmidt of Plymouth and # 98 John Dirks of Elkhart Lake rounding out the top five.  The Meyer Motors Hard Charger went to Dirks for passing five cars.

In the first of two All-American Mighty 4 A-Mains, # 17 Dave Dorzok of Kewaskum grabbed the early lead with # 5 Duane Dippel of Plymouth on his bumper.  Dippel and Dorzok crossed the line side by side with Dippel slightly ahead in lap four with # 20 Kevin Veldboom of Sheboygan on their bumper.  A lap later, Dorzok grabbed the lead but Dippel wanted it back and recaptured the top spot in lap six.  In lap ten, just five laps from the end, Veldboom took over second but Dippel had quite a lead over the field.  At the checkered, Dippel won his second A-Main of the season.  In a last lap pass, # 42 Jason Juech of West Bend maneuvered into second with Veldboom, # 9 Jason Voss of Glenbeulah and # 68 Joe Miller of Plymouth rounding out the top five.  The Meyer Motors Hard Charger went to Juech for passing nine cars.

In the second of two A-Mains, last week’s second place finisher # 71 Tammy Dickmann of Sheboygan grabbed the lead at the beginning with # 8 Ken Odekirk of New Holstein and # 85 Vicky Milbrath of Howards Grove on her bumper. In lap six, Odekirk retired to the pits not to return with # 33 Josh Long of Waldo and # 88 Brian Gilles of Plymouth moving in behind Dickmann.  A lap later, Dickmann, Long and Gilles raced three abreast through turns three and four and down the front stretch.  As the three cars shook out in lap eight, Long ended up in the top spot with Gilles in second.  In lap ten, Gilles edged out Long at the start/finish line by a bumper.  The only yellow came out in lap eleven and relined up the field for a four lap dash to the end.  Dickmann took advantage of the restart and maneuvered into second behind Gilles.  At the checkered, Gilles followed up last week’s win with another one.  Dickmann followed in second with Long, Milbrath and # 13 Jason Vollrath of Sheboygan rounding out the top five.  In addition to adding another win to his resume, Gilles earned the Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award for passing 11 cars.

Join Eastern Wisconsin next Saturday, July 26th when the Club celebrates Christmas in July.  The Marines will be collecting donations for the “Toys for Tots” at each of the entrance gates.  Fans who bring a donation for this cause will receive a discount coupon off the admission to the races that night.
