Past Track Champion Ostrowski Wins Pat Rand Memorial Twin 22 A-Mains
By Mary Burbach
July 12, 2003- Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars honored a fallen driver at the
Sargento Foods Annual Pat Rand Memorial Race of Champions on Saturday, July
12th. Pat Rand who was fatally injured in his # 44 Winged Super Modified race
car in an accident in July of 1994 has been honored and remembered at EWSC
annually since his death. This year the Modifieds ran Twin 22-lap
A-Mains in honor of Pat’s retired # 44. Pat’s daughter, Rebecca
Rand, started the Modifieds on their challenge to win the Pat Rand Memorial
trophy.
In the first of the two Twin 22-lap Modified A-Mains, polesitter # 42 Matt Van
Wyk of Sheboygan Falls grabbed the early lead over the rest of the field and
motored out to the front by himself. After the 20 car field shifted
positions for the first two laps, past track champion # 95 Kenjay Fiedler also
of Sheboygan Falls maneuvered into second with some track to make up to catch
leader VanWyk. In the same lap, four-time A-Main winner # 4 Paul
Pokorski of West Bend settled into third and another past track champion # 7
Pete Ostrowski of Milwaukee moved quickly from ninth to fourth. After
completing lap four, Pokorski passed Fiedler coming out of turn one and began
chasing down VanWyk. Ostrowski and # 22 Barry Maas of Cascade also passed
Fiedler in that lap to take over third and fourth, respectively. Two
laps later, a yellow flag pulled the field back together with VanWyk out in
front with Pokorski and Ostrowski lined up directly behind him. Coming away
from the green flag on the restart, VanWyk kept the lead as Ostrowski
maneuvered passed Pokorski for second. In lap 8, # 2 Billy Hafemann of
Cedar Grove jumped into third behind Ostrowski as Maas pulled a fan-favorite
wheelie down the front stretch. For the next three laps, as Van Wyk and
Ostrowski approached lapped traffic, Ostrowski pressured Van Wyk for the lead
of the first Twin 22 main. By lap 12, Ostrowski took control of the race
and began lapping cars. Hafemann immediately set his sights on second
and challenged Van Wyk that lap for the second spot. As Ostrowski sent
lapped cars back to Van Wyk and Hafemann, the two battled through the traffic
while trying to hold their positions. By lap 16, Hafemann took over
second and maneuvered through to get behind Ostrowski to challenge for the
win. But Ostrowski liked the lapped car cushion and clicked off a couple more
cars to keep the lead solidly in his possession. Coming around for the
checkered in the first leg of the Pat Rand Memorial Twin 22 race, Ostrowski
was the first of only five lead lap cars at the finish. Hafemann
followed in second with Maas, heat winner Van Wyk and Fiedler rounding out the
top five . The Meyer Motors Hard Charger Awards went to Ostrowski for passing
eleven cars.
In the second leg of the Twin 22 race, the lead cars got lined up inverted in
the front with Fiedler and Van Wyk setting the pace in the front row.
Fiedler jumped to the early lead and Hafemann fell in behind him to take
second. As Hafemann was chasing down Fiedler, Ostrowski jumped in behind
the two for the third spot. In lap eight, Hafemann maneuvered around
Fiedler to take control of the race. As Hafemann began lapping cars,
Fiedler battled through to get back to Hafemann’s bumper. After
calculating in the pits between the races, Ostrowksi knew if Hafemann won the
second A-Main, he would need to finish second to tie Hafemann in the points to
determine the overall winner. With qualifying breaking the tie in
points, Ostrowski would win because Ostrowski set a new track record earlier
in the program. By lap 17, Fiedler and Ostrowski were side-by-side at
the line with only one lapped car between theirs and leader Hafemann.
Ostrowski swung passed Fiedler and the lapped car to fall in behind Hafemann
just before debris on the track caused the first and only yellow flag on lap
19. As the race lined back up for the three lap dash to the checkered,
Hafemann sat out in front alone with Ostrowski and Fiedler on his
bumper. In a quick move after the green, Pokorski jumped from his fifth
place restart position to third behind Hafemann and Ostrowski. At the
checkered, Hafemann won the second leg of the Twin 22 Challenge with Ostrowski,
Pokorski, Fiedler and # 97 Tony Wondra of West Bend rounding out the top
five. The Meyer Motor Hard Charger award went to Pokorski for passing
ten cars.
When the overall finish was determined, Ostrowski won the Pat Rand Memorial
Twin-22 A-Main Race. Hafemann, tied with Ostrowski, finished in second
with Fiedler, Van Wyk and Maas holding the top five places.
In Limited Late Model action, # 52 Mark Zimmermann of Kohler jumped into the
early lead as # 69 Rick Thompson of Campbellsport and # 6 Richard Hed of
Sheboygan Falls maneuvered traffic to pull into second and third. By lap
five, Thompson and Hed were side-by-side at the start/finish line as the top
three cars spread out from the field. A lap later, Hed caught Thompson
and moved into second. As the cluster of Zimmermann, Hed and Thompson
stuck together, it became a three way battle for control of the race in lap
eight with Zimmermann and Thompson side-by-side. The next lap, Hed
jumped back into second as Zimmermann began motoring out in front.
Thompson maneuvered again and passed Hed to begin chasing down Zimmermann for
the lead. Double yellow and red flags in laps 12 and 13, slowed down
Zimmermann’s lead and pulled the field back together. On the restart,
Zimmermann held his lead as # 77 Brian Cesar of Sheboygan jumped into second
and Hed into third. As Cesar went high to challenge Zimmermann, Hed
stuck to the low side for his challenge. Just as Cesar looked successful
at passing Zimmermann on the track, the final yellow flag came out in lap 18
and put Zimmermann back in the lead on the restart. After the green flag
restarted the race, the one-minute-per-lap time limit was hit. At the
white flag, new track record holder # 85 Tim Carman of Sheboygan Falls jumped
from fifth to second behind Zimmermann. When the checkered flag flew,
Zimmermann was on top for his first A-Main win of the season. Carman
followed in second with Hed, # 65 Keith Borth of Sheboygan and previous A-Main
winner # 11 Howie Weiss of Glenbeulah rounding out the top five. The
Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award went to Carman for passing eleven cars.
As the Super Stock A-Main hit the track, eighteen competitors lined up for the
20-lap race. Polesitter # 00 Corey Brasser of Plymouth grabbed the lead
in lap one over front-row starter # 22 Jamie Gauger of Sheboygan. As
Brasser and Gauger settled into the top spots, # 95 Donny Kulow of Plymouth
climbed lap by lap to take over third just before a red flag stopped the cars
in lap four for the rolled over car of # 12 Brian Goetsch of Sheboygan in turn
three. After the race was restarted, Kulow jumped into second behind
Brasser and # 21 Kyle Odekirk of Plymouth moved up to fourth behind third
place Gauger. In lap eight, Gauger maneuvered back into second and
Odekirk followed him to move into third. A lap later, past track
champion # 98 John Dirks of Elkhart Lake moved into the top five. Dirks
made a swift assent to second by lap eleven. As Dirks moved in behind
leader Brasser, # 85 Steve Schad of Cleveland passed Gauger, Odekirk and # 4
Kevin Zimbal of Sheboygan Falls to pull into third behind Brasser and
Dirks. By lap 14, Schad passed Dirks as well for second and began the
challenge for the lead. Two laps later, Brasser began lapping cars and
Schad’s job became more difficult. At the white flag, Brasser had put
four lapped cars between first and second places to secure his first A-Main
win of the 2003 season. Schad, also trying to win his first A-Main in
2003, followed in second with two time A-Main winner Dirks in third.
Odekirk and Zimbal rounded out the top five. The Meyer Motors Hard
Charger Award went to B-Main transfer car # 13 Randy Ostermann Jr. of Howards
Grove after passing nine cars to finish ninth.
In the first of two All-American Mighty 4 A-Main races, # 03 Sandra Meyer of
Plymouth jumped to the front immediately as # 71 Tammy Dickmann of Sheboygan
moved in behind her to challenge for the lead. By the mid-point in the
race, Meyer lapped the first car but Dickmann stayed on her bumper. At the
checkered, rookie Meyer won her first A-Main race. Dickmann and # 33
Josh Long of Waldo finished second and third. Long won the Meyer Motors
Hard Charger honors in the first Mighty 4 A-Main by passing eleven cars to
finish third.
In the second A-Main, the lead shifted for the first couple laps with first #
12 Tim Anderson and then # 66 Travis Moehring, both of Sheboygan, holding the
top spot. In lap four, # 88 Brian Gilles of Plymouth moved into the lead
with Anderson on his bumper. Two laps later, a yellow flag halted the
racing action and relined up the field. Gilles set the pace in the front
of the restart with Anderson and # 23 Jeremy Goetsch of Sheboygan lined up
behind him. After the green, Goetsch maneuvered into second and # 26
Kevin Ruh of Plymouth jumped from fifth to third. As the laps clicked
off, Gilles began lapping cars and maneuvered to the checkered at the top of
the 15-car field. Goetsch followed in second with Ruh in third.
The Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award went to Goetsch after passing six cars to
finish second.
