Pokorski, Pitzen and Teunissen Win Big A-Main Races

By Mary Burbach

July 5, 2003- Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars celebrated the Sheboygan Chevrolet Mid-Season Championship races at the Sheboygan County Fair Park in Plymouth after the Club’s first rainout a week prior on Saturday, June 28th.  Nine full EWSC race shows ran prior to the mid-season point of the schedule with extra point shows for the Limited Late Models and Super Stocks at the Chilton track.  The point standings from these races determined the lineups for the Sheboygan Chevrolet race.

With the top 12 in the point standings locked into the Winged Super Modified A-Main, eight cars transferred from the B-Main to the back of the line up for the extended 40-lap race.  As the race started, front-row starters # 8 Kris Hansen of Manitowoc and # 99 Chuck Tuschl of Reedsville jumped to the early lead with # 22 Barry Maas of Cascade and # 2 Billy Hafemann of Cedar Grove on their bumpers.  By lap five, Hansen distanced himself out in front alone and began lapping cars.  Just as Hansen’s lead looked secure, the first yellow flag caution on lap eleven pulled the field back together and placed Tuschl and Maas directly behind Hansen.  Five laps later, Hansen was again out in front with Tuschl maneuvering to catch him.  In lap 17, # 62 Gary Laack of Glenbeulah jumped briefly into third behind Tuschl. A lap later, fifth place runner Hafemann took over third with Maas on his bumper.  By the mid-way point, in lap 20, Maas moved passed Hafemann to fall in behind Hansen and Tuschl.  # 98 Tim McMullen of Plymouth joined the top five in his climb from his ninth place starting position.  Just as Hansen had built just under a half track lead, the second yellow flag flew in lap 24.  Past track champion # 7 Pete Ostrowski of Milwaukee took advantage of the restart and his outside line up position to jump from seventh to fourth in the next lap.  The assent to the top was swift for Ostrowski as he passed Hansen and pulled into the top spot in lap 28.  Hansen stuck to Ostrowski’s bumper as the two competitors flew around the track.  As Ostrowski and Hansen battled out in front, # 97 Tony Wondra and # 4 Paul Pokorski, both of West Bend, climbed into third and fourth.  Ostrowski began clicking off lapped cars as Pokorski maneuvered around the traffic until in lap 35 when the lapped cars were put to the back on a restart.  As the field was lined back up with Ostrowski at the helm, mechanical problems plagued Ostrowski and sent his car to the pits.  Inheriting the lead, Pokorski lined up in front of the pack with Wondra and McMullen in the second row.  The race was restarted with five laps to go but was halted again as # 68 Craig Perko of Glenbeulah rolled his car in turn 4 in lap 37.  The cars were once again lined up and as the field attempted to complete another lap, rookie # 00 Adam Brasser of Plymouth flipped his car in turn one.  When the cars were relined up, the race would conclude with a green-green-white-checkered flag sequence with Pokorski, McMullen, Wondra, Tuschl and now fifth place # 95 Kenjay Fiedler of Sheboygan Falls.  Pokorski took no chances of losing the lead as he motored out in front of the field at the green.  Wondra maneuvered around McMullen at the white.  Pokorski held off the field and took the checkered flag to win his fourth A-Main this season.  Wondra was trying for his second win but would settle for second.  After a last lap incident, Laack maneuvered to finish in third with Fiedler and # 72 Dennis Klumb of Grafton rounding out the top five.  Pokorski’s win moved him into the division point lead.  After passing 10 cars each, Pokorski and Klumb tied for the nightly Meyer Motors Hard Changer Award.

In a scheduled 30-lap Limited Late Model A-Main, nineteen competitors lined up to take the green flag with # 57 John Scharenbroch of Sheboygan Falls and # 11 Howie Weiss of Glenbeulah setting the pace.  Weiss, the A-Main winner from 2 days earlier at the EWSC Independence Eve show at the Manitowoc Expo, jumped ahead and took the lead from the start.  Scharenbroch held on through a yellow flag restart but two laps later # 65 Keith Borth of Sheboygan maneuvered in behind Weiss to take over second.  As Borth was challenging for the lead, previous track champion # 3 Jim Pitzen of Plymouth climbed from fourth in the restart on lap six to second a lap later.  As Pitzen built momentum, he took over the lead from Weiss a lap later.  As the field was pulled back together again in lap twelve, Pitzen lined up in the front but had some sheet metal resting on his right rear tire.  As the race was restarted, # 6 Richard Hed of Sheboygan Falls moved into third to challenge Pitzen and Weiss.  Just before another yellow was displayed in lap fifteen, point leader # 89 Todd Jensema of Sheboygan Falls pulled into the top five.  The race restarted and was halted for the final time in lap eighteen.  Hed maneuvered on the restart to take over second behind Pitzen as the time limit on the race expired.  At the checkered, Pitzen won his second Limited Late Model A-Main of the 2003 season.  Hed followed in second with Borth, # 16 Brian Kessler of Plymouth and # 69 Rick Thompson of Campbellsport taking the top five positions.  The Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award went to # 71 Henry Dickmann of Sheboygan for passing nine cars.

In the Super Stock 25-lap A-Main, after a first lap multi-car pile up, the race restarted with # 12 Brian Goetsch of Sheboygan setting the pace in the lead with # 48 Doug Teunissen of Sheboygan Falls on his bumper.  Two laps later, Teunissen took the lead from Goetsch and fast qualifier # 21 Kyle Odekirk of Plymouth pulled into second.  As Teunissen and Odekirk began distancing their cars out in front, a yellow flag halted the racing action in lap nine and pulled the leaders back to the field.  Goetsch took advantage of the opportuntity to jump into second over Odekirk.  When a restart occurred again in lap eleven, it was Odekirk who took advantage of the restart to take back second.  Not settling for second, Odekirk pushed the envelope and raced Teunissen to the line.  Coming out of turn four to complete lap 13, Odekirk took the lead slightly at the line and raced forward.  In turn 4 again, completing the next lap, Teunissen retook the lead.  Teunissen and Odekirk again battled out in front by themselves.  In lap twenty, just five laps from the end of the race, # 98 John Dirks of Elkhart Lake climbed into third and started chasing down the leaders.  By lap 23, Dirks caught up to Teunissen and Odekirk as division point leader # 15 Brian Kaat of Plymouth moved into the top five.  As Teunissen, Odekirk and Dirks raced through the corner to take the white flag, Odekirk took the high groove to Teunissen and Dirks low route.  At the checkered flag, Teunissen won his first A-Main this season.  Odekirk followed in second with Goetsch, who won the last Super Stock A-Main at the Plymouth track, in third.  Passing two cars in the final lap, rookie # 45 Joe Schmidt of Plymouth maneuvered to finish fourth with point leader Kaat in fifth.  The Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award went to Schmidt for passing an impressive 12 cars.

In the first of two 15-lap All-American Mighty 4 A-Mains, polesitter # 66 Travis Moehring of Sheboygan grabbed the early lead with first # 85 Vicky Milbrath of Howards Grove and by lap 3, # 17 Dave Dorzok of Kewaskum on his bumper.  The next lap, Moehring and Dorzok were side by side at the start/finish line.  As the two battled for control of the race, Dorzok pulled into the lead in lap five.  Two laps later, one of two yellow flags relined back up the race just as Milbrath regrouped and took back the second spot.  After the restart, Milbrath grabbed the lead and never looked back.  Dorzok held onto second for three more laps until # 67 Dale Singer of Waldo maneuvered around Dorzok to pull up to Milbrath.  At the white flag, # 26 Kevin Ruh of Plymouth moved into third behind Milbrath and Singer.  At the checkered, Milbrath won her first A-Main.  Singer finished in second with Ruh, Dorzok and second in points # 5 Duane Dippel of Plymouth rounding out the top five.  The Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award went to Ruh for passing eight cars.

In the second Mighty 4 A-Main, # 9 Jason Voss of Glenbeulah took the early lead in lap one with # 21 Matt Kroeplian in the Odekirk Racing car in second.  Climbing up the field, # 71 Tammy Dickmann of Sheboygan maneuvered into second in lap three and began chasing down leader Voss.  As the leaders held on through a couple yellow flags, the race restarted after lap eight and ran until the checkered.  After this restart, # 33 Josh Long of Waldo fell in behind leader Voss and Dickmann.  In lap thirteen, # 03 Sandra Meyer of Plymouth chased down Long and took over the third spot.  As Voss began lapping cars, the laps clicked off and Voss took the checkered flag to win his second A-Main of the season.  Dickmann followed in second with Meyer, Long and # 15 Cory Edler of Cascade rounding out the top five.  The second Meyer Motors Mighty 4 Hard Charger was awarded to Meyer for passing seven cars.
