“Days of Summer” Racing at EWSC

By Mary Burbach

June 21, 2003 - Past track champion and A-Main polesitter # 7 Pete Ostrowski of Milwaukee motored out to take the lead in the first lap of the 30-lap Winged Super Modified main event.  In his first night out in the 2003 season, outside front row starter # 18 Butch Hafemann of Campbellsport stayed on Ostrowski’s bumper and as Ostrowski raced on the high groove, Hafemann kept his purple Modified tight on the inside of the track.  For laps, Ostrowski and Hafemann were side by side at the start/finish line much to the enjoyment of the crowd at the Sheboygan County Fair Park in Plymouth.  In lap 10, Hafemann led over Ostrowski by less than a bumper.  A lap later, Ostrowski took the lead over by inches.  In lap 12, Hafemann was back in the lead by a bumper again.  Then Ostrowski pulled a little more and passed Hafemann for the next lap.  As lapped traffic was in front of the battling leaders, Hafemann passed Ostrowski and a lap car to take the lead once again.  Just as Hafemann was building up a cushion on the track out in front, Ostrowski fell back with what appeared to be mechanical problems.  A yellow flag stopped Hafemann’s strong lead in lap 17 and on the restart, the field was pulled back together.  Ostrowski went into the pits but returned to the back of the field without missing a lap.  On the restart, # 62 Gary Laack of Glenbeulah and # 22 Barry Maas of Cascade were lined up just behind Hafemann in the lead.  A lap later, Hafemann’s son, # 2 Billy Hafemann of Cedar Grove passed Maas for third behind Laack.  In lap 21, the race was again halted with a yellow flag and relined up with Hafemann out in front and Laack and son Billy in the second row.  Maas moved back into third after the restart with # 98 Tim McMullen of Plymouth and # 99 Chuck Tuschl of Reedsville in fourth and fifth.  On lap 23, two time A-Main winner # 4 Paul Pokorski of West Bend moved into the top five and began clicking off cars until pulling in behind leader Hafemann in lap 27.  As Hafemann once again drove the low side of the track, Pokorski came on strong on the high side and passed Hafemann in lap 28 for the lead.  Pokorski followed through to win his third Modified A-Main this season.  Hafemann followed in second with Tuschl, heat winner Ostrowski and McMullen rounding out the top five.  The Meyer Motors Hard Charger award went to heat winner # 42 Matt Van Wyk of Sheboygan Falls for passing 9 cars after transferring from the B-Main.

In the Limited Late Model division, # 72 Chad Espen of Kewaskum grabbed the early lead in the 25-lap A-Main and began pulling away from the field.  # 5 Terry Goetsch of Sheboygan pulled into second and began chasing down Espen.  In lap 5, just before a rough couple laps with multiple car yellow flags, # 38 Scott Haugstad of Plymouth took over second with a eye on the front.  After the restarts were completed, Espen held the lead with Haugstad in second.  A past track champion, returning this season after not racing for years, # 3 Jim Pitzen of Plymouth moved into the top five in lap 8.  Just before the final yellow in the race on lap ten, Pitzen moved up one spot to fourth behind Espen, Haugstad and B-Main winner # 6 Richard Hed of Sheboygan Falls.  Just after the green flag restarted the race, Pitzen maneuvered around Hed to take third.  A lap later, second belonged to Pitzen.  In a bold pass coming out of turn 4, Pitzen took over the lead from Espen in lap fourteen.  By lap 17, Pitzen began pulling away from the rest of the field.  Eight laps later at the checkered, Pitzen won his first A-Main of the season with Espen, Haugstad, # 65 Keith Borth of Sheboygan and B-Main winner Hed rounding out the top five.  The Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award went to Hed for starting in fifteenth and passing eleven cars to finish fifth.

Without any yellow flags to slow down the racing action, the Super Stock A-Main went green flag to checkered for 20-laps.  Polesitter # 12 Brian Goetsch of Sheboygan grabbed the early lead and held on. Staying in the lead was not an easy feat, for the entire 20-laps, Goetsch had to outrace the current point leader and three-time A-Main winner # 15 Brian Kaat of Plymouth.  Staying out in front is exactly what Goetsch did.  Behind Kaat ran past division champion # 98 John Dirks of Elkhart Lake who was trying for his third A-Main win of the season.  Goetsch stayed focused and in control of the race to win his first A-Main of the season.  Kaat, who won the A-Main on Friday when the Super Stocks ran with the CCRA program in Chilton, followed in second.  Dirks followed in third with # 80 Luke Scholten of Oostburg and fast qualifier # 48 Doug Teunissen of Sheboygan Falls rounding out the top five.  After transferring from the B-Main, # 95 Donny Kulow of Plymouth passed eight cars to win the Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award.

With another record car count for the All-American Mighty 4 division, 30 competitors lined up to run two 15-lap A-Mains at the end of the Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars program.  In the first Main race, the early battle for the lead was between # 85 Vicky Milbrath of Howards Grove and # 33 Josh Long of Waldo.  Long took over the lead from Milbrath on lap four just before a yellow flag halted racing action.  In lap eight, # 26 Kevin Ruh of Plymouth pulled into the second spot behind Long and began challenging for the lead.  Two laps later, # 9 Jason Voss of Glenbeulah briefly took second place from Ruh but Ruh was determined and at the checkered flag took back second place.  At the finish, Long won his first A-Main race.  Ruh followed in second with Voss, #03 Sandra Meyer of Plymouth and # 17 Dave Dorzok of Kewaskum rounding out the top five.

In the second Mighty 4 A-Main, polesitter # 5 Duane Dippel of Plymouth grabbed the early lead with # 62 Eric Muehlbauer of Kiel in second.  By lap three, point leader # 88 Tim Sauter of Plymouth moved into third from his twelfth starting position to challenge Muehlbauer for second.  Sauter battled for the position for laps with Muehlbauer holding him at bay.  In lap eight, Sauter succeeded in passing Muehlbauer for second and maneuvered around a lap car to begin reeling in leader Dippel.  As the laps clicked off, it appeared there would not be enough laps left for Sauter to catch Dippel but slowly each lap Sauter made up some of the distance Dippel had acquired.  In the last lap, as the checkered flew, Sauter passed Dippel for his third A-Main win of the season.  Dippel followed in second with # 67 Dale Singer of Waldo, Muehlbauer, and # 77 Rich Miske of Belgium rounding out the top five.

Join Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars for another Saturday night race program at the Sheboygan County Fair Park in Plymouth on Saturday, June 28th.  The program will include the crowning of the 2003 Cain’s Bridal Wreath Miss EWSC.  The EWSC Board just announced the Independence Race Weekend Combination Ticket Deal.  For fans attending the Thursday, July 3rd EWSC show in Manitowoc and the Saturday, July 5th Sheboygan Chevrolet Mid-Season Championships in Plymouth, a special ticket can be purchased at the track with discounted prices.  For adult tickets, the combo ticket for both race admissions costs $ 15 ( a savings of $3 from normal EWSC prices).  The student combo ticket costs $ 10 and the child ticket costs $ 5.
