Ostrowski is Back in Town with Modified Win

By Mary Burbach

June 14, 2003 -  One hundred and nine cars showed up to compete at the “Flag Day” Races with the Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars program at the Sheboygan County Fair Park in Plymouth.  With the first “non-weather-threatened” night of the season, the fans turned out for a fast track, lots of competition and a full moon.

All three Modified heat winners lined up in the B-Main to qualify for the final eight spots in the main event.  Two of these heat winners, # 3 Robert Enders of Kiel and # 72 Dennis Klumb of Grafton, lined up in the front to start the 15-lap race.  Enders grabbed the early lead with Klumb chasing him down.  # 98 Tim McMullen of Plymouth, point leader from a week ago, maneuvered into third behind Klumb.  Just before the white flag lap, Klumb passed Enders for the lead. Klumb held on to win the Modified B-Main two weeks in a row.  Enders held off McMullen for second.

As the top eight finishers in the B-Main tagged the back of the starting lineup of the Modified A-Main, polesitter # 4 Paul Pokorski of West Bend set the pace and took the early lead to begin the 30-lap race.  Pokorski began building a cushion out in front as # 62 Gary Laack of Glenbeulah maneuvered into second.  When the race was restarted on lap 9 after a tire was kicked out onto the track, # 2 Billy Hafemann of Cedar Grove took the lead from Pokorski.  Hafemann’s lead was short lived as # 7 Pete Ostrowski of Milwaukee, who was fifth on the restart, jumped passed 2 cars in lap ten to take third behind Pokorski.  The next lap, Ostrowski passed both Pokorski and Hafemann to secure the lead in lap twelve.  By lap 17, Ostrowski began lapping cars with Pokorski chasing him down.  In lap 19, another yellow flag was displayed for another tire on the track.  Miller Lite Fast Qualifier # 95 Kenjay Fiedler of Sheboygan Falls used this restart to move from sixth to third in one lap.  By lap 20, Fiedler was trailing Pokorski and pressuring for the second spot.  A lap later, Fiedler passed Pokorski to chase down the lead. For the final ten laps, Ostrowski and Fiedler, two previous Modified track champions, charged out in front.  At the checkered, Ostrowski was the victor and after being the hard charger for the last 2 A-Mains, Ostrowski’s hard charging racing style would put him in the Miller Lite Winners’ Circle.  Fiedler, tied for the Meyer Motors Hard Charger honors, finished second with Pokorski, # 8 Kris Hansen of Manitowoc and B-Main transfer McMullen rounded out the top five.  McMullen tied Fiedler for the Meyer Motors Hard Charger award with both drivers passing 10 cars.

In the Limited Late Model B-Main, with four cars scheduled to transfer on, # 6 Richard Hed of Sheboygan Falls maneuvered his car to a half-track lead over the other competitors to take home the checkered.  # 44 Jim Lavey of Sheboygan, # 21 Paul Dingel also of Sheboygan and # 12 Matt Buckman of Plymouth won the transfers to the A-Main.

Front row starters, # 69 Rick Thompson of Campbellsport and # 79 Jim Schmidt of Cleveland charged out in front of the 18-car field to secure first and second early in the 25-lap Limited Late Model A-Main.  By the halfway point, # 52 Mark Zimmermann of Kohler, who had been missing from the track for weeks with engine problems, maneuvered into third.  # 77 Brian Cesar of Sheboygan pulled in behind Zimmerman for fourth.  As the laps clicked off, both Thompson and Schmidt were trying to win their second A-Main in the 2003 season.  Thompson held off Schmidt to take home the checkered flag for the   main event.  Schmidt followed in second with Zimmermann, Cesar and # 72 Chad Espen of Kewaskum rounding out the top five point positions.  The Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award went to B-Main winner Hed after starting in the back of the lineup and passing 9 cars to secure a sixth place finish.

With 33 competitors in the Super Stock division, the C-Main race transferred # 9 Tony Miller of Random Lake and # 8 Abe Meinnert of Elkhart Lake to the back of the B-Main.  Heat winner # 84 Bradley Ruh of Elkhart Lake took control of the 15-lap race early on with # 0 Mark Scholten of Oostburg on his bumper.  As the white flag was displayed, Scholten and  # 45 Joe Schmidt of Plymouth crossed even at the line.  With Scholten and Schmidt battling, Ruh wins the Super Stock B-Main.  A final lap spin in turn two takes Scholten out of the transfers and placed Schmidt securely in second.  C-Main transfer Meinnert hard charged into third, with # 37 Jeff Leonhard, # 2 Mike Damrow and # 72 Mike Humphrey all of Sheboygan earning transfers to the A-Main.

# 4 Kevin Zimbal of Sheboygan Falls grabbed the early lead in the Super Stock A-Main as polesitter # 85 Steve Schad of Cleveland secured second.  With the rest of the field tight together, Zimbal and Schad charged out in front alone.  As Schad began gaining on Zimbal, the only yellow flag of the race came out in lap 13 to pull the leaders back in with the rest of the field.  Zimbal wasted no time on the restart to jump out in the lead again with Schad back in second.  Both Zimbal and Schad were vying for their first A-Main win of the season.  After the restart, two-time A-Main winner # 98 John Dirks of Elkhart Lake pulled into third behind Zimbal and Schad.  As the 20-lap race came to the end, Zimbal would take the checkered with Schad following in second.  Dirks, rookie # 97 Bob Peter of Howards Grove and point leader # 15 Brian Kaat of Plymouth finished in the top five.  After a last lap pass, Kaat earned the Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award by passing six cars.

With the largest car count of the EWSC division’s 3-year history, 27 competitors divided into 2 All-American Mighty 4 A-Mains.  In the first 15-lap event, # 9 Jason Voss of Glenbeulah grabbed the early lead and held off a previous A-Main winner, # 5 Duane Dippel of Plymouth, for the win. First night racer # 26 Kevin Ruh of Plymouth maneuvered into third by lap twelve and held off the race’s Meyer Motors Hard Charger # 88 Tim Sauter of Plymouth.

In the second Mighty 4 A-Main, front row starters # 7 Wesley Baumann of Elkhart Lake and # 23 Jeremy Goetsch of Sheboygan looked to have the top spots locked up as Baumann and Goetsch were out in front by themselves.  A couple of yellow flags in laps 8 and 9 pulled the field together again.  On the first restart, # 67 Pete Mueller of Random Lake maneuvered around both Baumann and Goetsch to secure the lead before the second yellow.  On the second restart, Baumann was forced into the pits with mechanical problems and would not return.  Mueller held onto the top spot to win his first A-Main race.  Goetsch, who was trying for a second A-Main win, followed in second with # 71 Tammy Dickmann of Sheboygan, # 15 Cory Edler of  Cascade and # 85 Vicky Milbrath of Howards Grove rounding out the top five. The Meyer Motors Hard Charger Award went to Mueller after starting in the back and passing 11 cars to win the race.

Join the Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car drivers for another great night of “Summer Time” racing on the first day of summer, Saturday, June 21st at the Sheboygan County Fair Park in Plymouth.  Qualifying begins at 5:45 pm and racing follows.
