Foggy EWSC Lakeside Foods Night at Manitowoc Expo Completed

By Mary Burbach

June 7, 2003-  The Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car race program hit the Manitowoc Expo for the second time in the 2003 Miller Lite Point Series.  The Lakeside Foods Night at the Races began with qualifying the self-starting Winged Super Modifieds, Limited Late Models and Super Stock divisions to determine the heat and main race line ups.  About 90 Lakeside Foods employees and their family and friends braved the “un-seasonal” race weather to be honored at the EWSC program in Manitowoc.  Rain seemed to be the threat throughout the day but a strong showing in the grandstand meant the fans were ready to see some racing.

On the start, front row started # 4 Jason Allen of Fredonia grabbed the early lead over polesitter # 6 Richard Hed of Sheboygan Falls.  With a long track to race, Allen put distance between his car and Hed’s by lap three.  Hed began a three way “train” with heat winner # 72 Chad Espen of Kewaskum and # 89 Todd Jensema of Sheboygan Falls to get behind Allen to challenge for the lead.  While they were battling it out for second, Allen just kept getting further ahead in front of the field.  In a two-lap spurt of momentum, Jensema took over third from Espen in lap ten and second from Hed in lap eleven.  With lap traffic slowing down Allen just a tad, Jensema set his sights on first.  By lap fifteen, when Allen began lapping cars, Jensema was right behind him to lap the same cars.  On lap seventeen, Allen and Jensema were even at the scoring line.  In turns one and two, Jensema grabbed the top spot, lapped a car and flew out in front of the pack.  With only five laps to go in lap twenty, Jensema had 4 lapped cars running within the top five lead lap cars.  Jensema never lost his momentum and went to the Miller Lite Winner’s Circle for his second A-Main win this season.  Allen followed in second with Espen, heat winner # 11 Howie Weiss of Glenbeulah and Miller Lite Fast Qualifier # 3 Jim Pitzen of Plymouth rounding out the top five.  The Meyer Motors of Plymouth Hard Charger award also goes to Pitzen after passing eight cars in the Lakeside Foods Limited Late Model A-Main.

Earlier in the division racing, rookie # 27 Eric Baesemann of Elkhart Lake motored his car out in front to win his second B-Main at the Manitowoc Expo.  Baesemann, who earlier won his heat race, held off the other competitors to be one of four cars to transfer to the A-Main.  # 16 Brian Kessler of Plymouth grabbed second place in lap seven when Baesemann had a quarter track lead over the field.  Kessler was slowly reeling in the top spot but without any yellows to pull the field back together, the race was controlled by Baesemann.  Kessler finished in second with # 88 Steve Ziegelbauer and # 21 Paul Dingel, both of Sheboygan, earning the final transfers.

In the Winged Super Modified division, the fifteen-lap B-Main was fast and fierce as the drivers had one last chance to make it to the main event.  # 72 Dennis Klumb of Grafton and # 2 Billy Hafemann of Cedar Grove, who battled earlier in the heat race, ran bumper to bumper out in front for laps until Klumb pulled out securely in front.  In the heat race, it was Hafemann that took home the win but with the car looking hooked up on the Manitowoc track, Klumb came for the checkered to win the Modified B-Main.  Hafemann followed in second with heat winner # 97 Tony Wondra of West Bend following in third.  Just as Klumb was coming around to enter the pits, smoke billowed from his car and scratched him from transfering to the A-Main.

In the Super Stock division, fifteen-lap B-Main field included three out of the four heat race winners.  Substitute driver # 95 Jeff Muehlbauer of Elkhart Lake grabbed the early lead with brothers # 35 Ben Schmidt and # 45 Joe Schmidt, both of Plymouth, just behind him.  Just after the only yellow flag of the race in lap three, younger brother Joe took second away from Ben.  # 80 Luke Scholten of Oostburg maneuvered into third as Joe set his sights on Muehlbauer.  The next lap, Joe would be success at taking the top spot.  Joe Schmidt entered the Miller Lite Winners Circle for the second time in the race program after winning his heat race earlier.  It was a night of seconds for Muehlbauer as he place second in both his heat and the B-Main.  Scholten followed in third with Ben Schmidt and # 98 John Dirks of Elkhart Lake rounding out the top five.

The Modified A-Main took the track with twenty cars to present another fast race for the fans in Manitowoc.  Unfortunately, with only twelve of thirty laps completed, the yellow flag came out for hazardous conditions on the track as a thick wall of fog rolled onto the track at the Manitowoc Expo.  Track personnel and the racers on the track determined that the conditions were such that drivers and safety personnel could not see well enough to continue.  The program was called complete as, per EWSC rules, all the B-Main races were completed.  Also, per EWSC rules, the Modified A-Main would have had to run half of the scheduled laps to be given the checkered flag so all drivers in the A-Main would be awarded average points for that race.  The Super Stock and Mighty 4 A-Mains would also not run and the competitors would be awarded average points for the race program.

Join Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars when the self-starting Winged Super Modifieds, Limited Late Models, Super Stocks and All-American Mighty 4’s return to the Sheboygan County Fair Park in Plymouth for a full night of dirt track racing on Saturday, June 14th .
