Pokorski, Jensema, Dirks and Sauter BIG Winners at EWSC
By Mary Burbach
May 17, 2003 – In Winged Super Modified racing action, # 4 Paul Pokorski of West Bend grabbed the lead early in the 30-lap A-Main event and never looked back. After flipping and damaging his car on EWSC opening night May 3rd, Pokorski put his Gremlin back together and into the Miller Lite Winners Circle at the Sheboygan County Fair Park in Plymouth. Polesitter # 3 Robert Enders of Kiel fell into second as Pokorski distanced his car out in front. As Enders tried to cut the distance between his car and the leader, Pokorski began lapping cars in lap seven. With this lap traffic in the way, # 62 Gary Laack of Glenbeulah maneuvered around Enders taking over second and looking to the front. By mid-race, Pokorski had lapped five other competitors but on lap thirteen, the rolling cars of # 93 Keith Anderson of Sheboygan and # 22 Barry Maas of Cascade brought out the red flag. In the restart lineup, lapped cars get repositioned in the rear of the lead lap cars which brought Laack and # 55 Brian Portschy of Oostburg on Pokorski’s tail. As the action was back underway, # 98 Tim McMullen of Plymouth joined Laack and Portschy in chasing down Pokorski with McMullen taking third from Portschy in lap twenty-two. Pokorski continued on to win the second Winged Super Modified A-Main of the 2003 EWSC Season. Laack, McMullen, Portschy and Kenjay Fiedler of Sheboygan Falls rounded out the top five. The Meyer Motors of Plymouth Hard Charger Award went to McMullen for passing four cars in the A-Main.
In green flag to checkered flag action with no interruption from any accidents, the eighteen Limited Late Models lined up for the A-Main event provided fast paced racing action for the race fans. Polesitter # 4 Jason Allen of Fredonia beat out front row starter # 65 Keith Borth of Sheboygan for the lead on lap one. With Borth on his tail and threatening his lead, Allen maneuvered his 2003 Mustang body car around the clay oval as the leader for the majority of the A-Main event. Allen held off Borth and # 69 Rick Thompson of Campbellsport until in lap twenty-one when last week’s Miller Lite Fast Qualifier # 89 Todd Jensema of Sheboygan Falls maneuvered around both Thompson and then Borth. As Jensema fell in behind Allen, Jensema wasted no time by passing Allen in the next lap for the lead. With just the white and checkered flags to go, Jensema kept his momentum and went to the Miller Lite Winners Circle by winning the second Limited Late Model A-Main of the 2003 EWSC Season. The Meyer Motors of Plymouth Hard Charger Awards went to # 6 Dick Hed of Sheboygan Falls for also passing four cars.
In Super Stock racing, polesitter # 80 Luke Scholten of Oostburg jumped out to the front and defended his lead in the 20-lap race against # 3 Dean Horneck of Kiel. On lap three, the race was halted first by a single car incident and then by a multi-car pileup on the backstretch. Once the track was cleared and the A-Main restarted, Scholten once again gained control of the race. By this time, Scholten was warding off last week’s Super Stock A-Main winner # 98 John Dirks of Elkhart Lake. # 48 Doug Teunissen of Sheboygan Falls fell in behind Dirks to chase down Scholten. On lap fourteen, Dirks maneuvered his Rhine Auto 2003 Pontiac Brand Prix around Scholten to take over control of the remaining seven laps. A lap later, Teunissen took over second but Dirks would stay out in front to join the others in the Miller Lite Winners Circle. Teunissen took second with B-Main transfer Jason Allen, # 35 Ben Schmidt of Plymouth and # 37 Jeff Leonhard of Sheboygan rounding out the top five. Leonhard would also take the Meyer Motors Hard Charger honors by passing an outstanding thirteen competitors to finish fifth.
All-American Mighty 4 polesitter # 88 Tim Sauter of Plymouth followed suit and grabbed the early lead over outside front row starter # 23 Jeremy Goetsch of Sheboygan. Sauter went right to work putting lapped cars between his car and second place. As Sauter picked off lapped cars in the twenty-three car, fifteen lap event, Goetsch maneuvered around Sauter to challenge for the lead. By the time there were four or five lapped cars between the lead and second in lap thirteen, # 5 Duane Dippel of Plymouth and # 9 Jason Voss of Glenbeulah would maneuver passed Goetsch to stake out second and third. Sauter, with a huge “lapped car” cushion by the checkered flag, beat his second place finish last week with a trip to the Miller Lite Winners Circle Saturday. Dippel, Voss, Goetsch and # 71 Tammy Dickmann of Sheboygan rounded out the top five in the Mighty 4 A-Main event. The Meyer Motors of Plymouth Hard Charger Award went to # 83 Tyler Elias of Plymouth by also passing thirteen cars.
