Reuvers, Schultz Pick Off Series Championships
(Elko, MN – 9-4-05) Donny Reuvers and Steve Schultz were both under
the pressure of needing solid runs to capture the championships that were at
stake Sunday night at Elko Speedway. Both showed what it takes to get
the job done.
Reuvers had a win and a second in twin-50 lap features to capture the title in
the ACDelco Super Summer Series while Schultz motored to the win and the
championship in the Mid/Am GhostRiders Sportsmen 50.
Reuvers started 10th in the first 50 and immediately began his assault on the
rest of the field. Steve Anderson and Jonathan Eilen swapped the lead
several times in the early going with Anderson holding the point when the
first of two yellow flags come out on the 32 lap. Eilen was forced to
drift back to the 7th spot after jumping the restart to the inside of
Anderson. That allowed Reuvers to move into second. A second
caution on lap 41 allowed Reuvers to tighten up on Anderson and make the pass
for the lead and win three laps later. Jake Ryan moved into second,
relegating Anderson to a third place finish. He was followed across the
line by Jacob Goede and Jeff Van Oudenhoven.
The lead lap cars were inverted for the second 50 with Reuvers starting
20th. Eilen moved to the lead 11 circuits into the race moving Gary
Petrash to second with Charlie Menard, Mark Eswein and Rick Burns in
tow. A lap 20 caution tightened the field with Reuvers moving into the
fifth running spot. Reuvers got around Menard for third with a dozen
laps left and then around Eswein for second with just 8 to go. Eilen had
his work cut out for him as a lap 44 cautioned put Reuvers on the back
bumper. The pair would run nose to tail until the final circuit when
Reuvers shot to the inside. Eilen was up for the task, crossing the line
a half car length in front of Reuvers. Eswein settled for third followed
by Adam Royle and Jake Ryan.
Schultz continued his strong season in running away from the field in the
yellow-free Sportsmen feature. It took Schultz 9 laps to wrestle the
lead away from Mike Skaja. The most intense battle of the race was for
the third spot as Justin Neisus, bested Greg Bieber and Josh Larsen to gain a
podium finish. Among his rewards, Schultz earned a trip for two to the
2006 Daytona 500.
